T-shirt quest is happening . . . The last few times I've browsed t-shirts in stores like Old Navy, the results have been disappointing. Thin material, crappy quality, weird sizing . . . I've seen it all. But the time has come. I'm on a quest to find and sew the most perfect T-shirt patterns. This quest is mostly happening now because my zigzag stitch magically fixed itself on my sewing machine . . . Could it be due to switching the needle? Cleaning the machine? Who knows. Some say zigzag stitches look "homemade." I say . . . Why are you looking at my stitches so close, you weirdo? This is the glorious #jacksontee from @helens__closet . All I can say is, wow. Such a perfect and easy pattern. It's the ideal throw it on, tuck it in or wear it untucked, everyday basic tee. I've made it before, but I've definitely leveled up my sewing skills since the last time I sewed it. My only adjustment was to narrow the shoulders. Love it! Sews: This is an easy, beginner friendly pattern that just comes out well every time. I have 4 of these and they fit so well, which just delights me. Grows: I am so bad at knit hems. I'm a just eyeball it kind of sewer, which isn't great for the long, stretchy hems, especially when you're working with striped knits. I rely on copious ironing when I'm making things with woven fabric. But that doesn't fly with knits. Suggestions are welcome! Friends, we're entering an era where the only way you can get a quality T-shirt is by buying the material and making it yourself. Makes from this weekend…. New pattern for Simon - this is the @wardrobebymepatterns #bramraglan It comes out quite big with super long sleeves which I needed to shorten and overall I’m happy with them but just wish the head hole was not quite so big. I did try making the powder blue one with a smaller neckband but I think it may need further adjustments though a different fabric may come out differently. This was all modal jersey and tencel modal jersey from @guthrieghani and we both love wearing it, it’s so soft. Mine is a @helens__closet #jacksontee one of my favourite patterns, and I didn’t have enough fabric which I bought in the sale last weekend from @jennystitchesfabrics so I did the back in some petrol jersey from @clarabelle_fabrics which I had left over from other projects. I’m happy with how it’s turned out and hopefully it will go well with my plum heydays. They both have labels in but you can only see mine which are @kylieandthemachine from last years advent calendar. Well, after my mammoth batch cutting session Saturday morning, I’m done for this weekend! Four tee shirts and a cuddly toy for Bailiie plus making dough balls for her kibble baking session next weekend…. First up, was the cuddly toy for Bailiie…. So cute, lots of hand stitching and a new stitch learned for the eyes but I love it, and it’s just made out of scraps of alpine fleece with the fluffy side on the outside. I don’t think it will be long before it has no nose or 👀!!! Next up were two tee shirts… Simon requested a ribbed grey tee shirt with a “v” at the neckline (not a v-neck), so that’s what he got - I used the @helens__closet #jacksontee with the @tillybuttons Frankie “v” pattern, adjusted to fit the neckline of this one and did it as appliqué with interfacing on the back. Then I did the ditsy flower one for me and this used every bit of my bolt end piece of fabric from @guthrieghani - this one I had to cut the sleeves against the grain as I didn’t have enough fabric. But I was advised to cut them slightly bigger then adjust if needed and I tried fitting them but there was just too much fabric so I took them back to the original size - I think because it was 70% 4-way stretch I was lucky and I love it - it’s another #jacksontee but I’ve lowered the neckline too. Today, after making dough balls for Bailiie’s kibble, I made two more tee shirts - another grey jersey one for Simon and a white one for me using the pocket hack on Helen’s blog - to say I love the #helensclosetjacksontee pattern is a slight understatement - this is my favourite tee pattern yet with excellent instructions and it’s super quick to make up. The grey rubbed jersey, the white and grey jerseys were all from @jennystitchesfabrics and they’re lovely fabrics to work with. The pattern for the animal was from one of my sewing magazines but it’s not being like the pictures - it’s special and unique. I was inspired by @corriesfancygoods with my new glasses. I loved yours Corrie but the style didn’t suit me so I chose something very different to what I would normally wear. I’m also trying to wear different colours now I’m making my own clothes and I whipped this @helens__closet #jacksontee up this afternoon. I have another one cut out and ready to sew but I think I’ll lower the neckline slightly. Fabric was a remnant from @guthrieghani bought back in January and I tested the pattern out on mine first before making hubby one in a different colour. My most recent make from remnants and scraps. This is a @helens__closet #dawsontop I lowered the neckline slightly and re measured the opening. I didn’t have enough of the bear fabric and not enough of the petrol jersey to cut the back on grain and in one piece so I had to cut it slightly bigger with the stretch running down instead of across and out a join in the middle. It turned out ok so it’s having its first outing today on our January camping trip. I reached way way back into the stash for this make. This ~2 yard scrap was leftover from one of the first garments I ever made in 2017! As you can see, there’s a flaw running through the print creating faint streaks. I used the lettering on the wide border to add a detail to the thumb hole. I might add a decoration of some kind, but I also might lose this top to one of my teenagers. Pattern: Helen’s Closet Jackson pullover with hood. So after hearing last week primary schools would close a week earlier, they announced on Saturday that all schools will be closed until the new year. Here we are wearing our matching sweatshirts 💕 Mine is @helens__closet Jackson pullover and India’s is @poppyandjazz strawberry sweatshirt Both are made in a cotton waffle knit from the latest @sewhayleyjane box. I made my sweatshirt in a size 18 and I like the fit. It’s oversize but I like it roomy! I used a navy ribbing for the neckband, hem band and cuffs. It was easy to make and Helen’s instructions are fab! I made India. In age 18-24 months although she’s only really in 12-18 months. I wanted her to get plenty of wear out of it! It is long on the sleeves for her but the length is ok for her. I used navy ribbing for the neckband and cuffs but didn’t have enough for the hem.
