One of my goals this year was to make a few more tops that I could wear with my jeans, This is the March Top & Dress by @helens_closet made out of a Sevenberry yarn-dyed cotton. The fabric is thicker than I anticipated- and consequently pretty warm- so I probably won't be reaching for this one until the fall. I love the colors though and the sleeves are pretty fun! I cut out a March Top by @helens__closet probably the week it came out. But I wanted to embroider it….and Well it’s still not done 🥸 I got sick of waiting so I recently made one from this Lady McElroy fabric from @harts_fabric 💚 View & Size: This is View C and I made it a couple sizes smaller (I will double check!). Mods: I also had to lower the center front neck about an 1” and the center back neck about 3/8”. For some reason they both went up on to my neck. But it worked out great! And I almost always have to adjust the small of the back by removing a bit. So I did so on the bottom of the back bodice- about 3/4”. The peplum was left untouched. 💚 I love the way View C looks as the flat sketch on the envelope so that’s why I chose it! It has a sort of old folk wear vibe. And it’s pretty darn close to the same silhouette! I’ll make it solid next time to show off the style lines better 🙂 File this under #ThingsIMadeWithoutYou 😆 It’s so rare I sew anything that isn’t streamed. I actually was recording a How To video and I made a very silly mistake on the center front slit that made the videos hilariously a waste of time. Me Made May Day 7: Headed to church and wearing a dress that I LOVE. I made the top version first and totally hated it. I used the wrong fabric which was the main issue and I’m a dress girl! Of course I wouldn’t like the shirt version after seeing so many great dresses! I left the sleeves off and love how it looks. I love a puffy sleeve but for everyday wear I love a short sleeve because you have more options to layer. It’s also nice to be able to use a lot less fabric. My dog was in every full dress shot so this was the best I could do. Pattern: #marchdress by @helens__closet Fabric: shower curtain from target. Make Nine 2023. Because I'm on holiday and can't sew, of course I'm dreaming of what I can sew next. This time round I've tried to be conscious of makes that will extend my skills and provide me with items I will wear a lot. My Make Nine are: 1. Activewear. My girls and I wear a lot of activewear. I'm a regular gym goer and enjoy bush walks, one of my girls dances and the other just wears a lot of activewear. I'm also really picky about comfort and have passed on many a pair of tights where the butt seam is in the wrong place, so this could be a disaster! I'm loving a range of patterns - tights, singlets and sports bras from @greenstyle_patterns 2. Something to wear to my brother's wedding. We are off to my brother's wedding in Florida in July. It will be baking. I've not settled on exactly what I will make yet, but the @truebias Calvin Wrap Dress is currently at the top of the list. I will also make my girls dresses if they would like me to. 3. The #closetcoremitchell pants. I want to make pants with a fly and welt pockets and I love these. 4. Jeans. Let's be honest these have been on my Make 9 list for about 3 years and haven't been made. Maybe 2023 is the year! I even cut out and modified the #mnashjeans pattern last summer, but haven't used it yet. I also have black and blue stretch denim in my stash. 5. PJs with piping, for me not my children as they often have fancy PJs and I never do. I have the #closetcorecarolyn pattern and some gorgeous pencil print liberty poplin I picked up on sale ready to go. 6. More bras. #watsonbra with foam and maybe try some other patterns. 7. A bag. I already have this #compassbag pattern. 8. An #oslocoat in a checked wool I've had stashed for about 2 years. Again this has been on my list for a while and hasn't been made yet. My old coat is getting pretty worn, so maybe that will inspire me! 9. An embroidered #helensclosetmarch top . I'm no embroiderer, it's usually not my thing, but I love this. I'm thinking I may do some Japanese Sashiko embroidery instead though. I'm not sure I'm quite up to freestyling flowers like this amazing one! #makenine2023

Back from the best break with pals and it was so good to wear some summery clothes 😌 it's been so long!! This is my version of the #marchdress by @helens__closet. I've had this pattern for a while and finally got round to making it this month in time for our wee getaway. All pattern pieces were lengthened by 2-3 inches and I think I underestimated the built in ease so I added some waist ties to pull it in a little bit. As usual helens instructions are fab and I am so happy with the finished dress! 👗 I made this in some double gauze cotton fabric after eyeing it for ages in @sewn_on_the_tyne 's stories for @1stforfabrics and I absolutely loved working with it. It was also so cosy when it got a little chillier on a night but equally kept me nice and cool during the midday sun. Finally more sewing. Am roughly half way through the @helens__closet #marchdress made in this awesome fabric from @fabricgodmother I’ve added waist ties to the side of the centre front panel because although I love the drop sleeves on this dress I wasn’t so keen on the loose fit on bigger bodies so I wanted to be able to cinch it in a bit. I think. Tbh I’m not really sure what my logic was as I cut out this dress in May last year. When I thought the house build and move wasn’t going to take over my entire life for 6 months and I’d still have time to sew! 😂 Anyway its now in my grand tradition of making clothes at a completely seasonally inappropriate time of year. I was also in a bit of a rut with sewing last year. I have plenty of options for summer that I want to make, but I wasn’t really finding any patterns I wanted to sew into winter dresses. Then I went on a YouTube deep dive a couple of weeks ago, & I’ve just put in an order with the copy shop for printing of 7 patterns that have caught my eye. Obviously if I manage all 7 by the time the weather gets roasting again it will be some kind of miracle, but I’m going to try. The weather this year has been so extreme, it’s been one of the hottest summers ever and so far an unusually cold winter. I’ve bought a load of nice courdroy and a load of flannel from Joanns and I’m hoping to make dresses that are really warm and comfortable. More often than not I make something and think it’s just ok, however every so often I make something that I absolutely love and this is definitely one of those times!!! This is the #marchtop from @helens__closet which I spent yesterday sewing together. I’m totally loving the boho vibes! This patten reminds me of a mash up between my two favourite patterns - #m7969 and #roscoeblouse - but with a little extra something special. @helens__closet makes understanding a pattern so easy with such simple to understand instructions and little tips along the way. Made a size 8, however did take the sides in slightly so it wasn’t quite as roomy. I also shorted the bodice by a few cms and lengthened the gathered tier at the bottom by about 4 cm. Fabric was from my stash, purchased some time ago from @spotlightstores - I think it is a linen blend but not 100% sure on that one! It’s a beautiful print all the same and kind of wishing I had of had enough to make the dress version instead. Now the dilemma - what to make next!!

And finally. Nearly a year after it was cut out. A @helens__closet #marchdress in @fabricgodmother (I think it’s #ladymcelroyfabric ). I’m reasonably happy with this one. I bought the fabric on a bit of a whim and it’s not really my colour pallet or style (I usually go for black and jewel colours and floral rather than lime green and orange modernist), and I totally couldn’t work out what to do with it so I nearly got rid of the fabric, but then I saw @sozoblog ‘s lovely top in the same fabric and decided to give a dress a go. I chose the March dress because it’s relatively plain (for me) so the fabric can do the talking and I love the drop shouldered gathered sleeves. However I wasn’t so keen on the oversized boxy fit round the waist so I added waist ties. These were really easy to add as there was an obvious point to add them in the construction. I’m still not sure it’s ‘me’. It’s still not my colour palate, I don’t wear a lot of makeup and my skin tends to go bright pink, so I’m not sure that lime green doesn’t exacerbate the effect. But it will be a nice and functional dress for Summer. And hopefully I’ll get some better photographs then. At least in this house there’s a couple of places for taking indoor photographs. The last house there was nowhere and the flat before that it was in the skanky 1970’s council flat corridor. Also I’m feeling really self conscious today as I’m just getting over another round of covid (yay!🙄) and this times main fun side effect seems to be that my face has gone all puffy. After this my next plan is an also completely unseasonal Molby inspired two tone gingham Bakerloo dress. But I might have to work on curtains as a priority as Jon’s mum is coming over in a couple of weeks and has offered to help me with them & Sod’s Law I will be too ill to get anything done in the meantime. #sewing #helensclosetmarch #helenscloset #plussizesewing #disabledsewing

Soaking up the last bits of summer Maine has to offer. ☀️Made this #marchdress from @helens__closet back in June, however I realized after making it I needed to line the skirt. 😂Fabric is a yellow and white stripped seersucker. I had a little fun playing with stripe direction on the bodice and the large patch pockets I added to the skirt.

This was such a satisfying make as it was made ENTIRELY out of fabric scraps(!!) Those precious little odds and ends that were too nice to throw away we’re finally used! This is the March Dress/Top by @helens__closet made out of a linen/rayon blend from @harts_fabric, and the front and back panels were made out of a lightweight rayon from @stonemountainfabric. #marchdress from a pattern by @helens__closet . This is definitely not the first adult dress pattern that I expected to sew from for her. She does not like fitted dresses, but I was not expecting her to go for this kind of boho look either. 😀 But after we went through a few patterns she was pretty insistent, and I gave in and sewed it up exactly as she wanted with a fabric of her choice. This is view A in the smallest size with the following modification: because her frame is more petite in the torso than even the smallest size I took in the top bodice panels (both front and back) 1/4” from the sides. This reduced the width by 1” total at the waist a d through the bust. The skirt was not modified, except for the length (I folded it by an extra 1/2”) . It still is big on the waist, but that’s the style and I don’t think it made a difference in terms of the look. I also skipped the interfacing for both the panels and sleeve cuffs. The fabric is some very beautiful handloom cotton from @bombay_looms . I think stripes is a good fabric for such a dress because one can really play with it. Embroidery and beads are extra. I am told that it is insanely comfortable, and it makes me so happy that she likes it so much. Adolescents, as we know, can be hard to please! **** @helens__closet is a new pattern company to me, but the instructions are top notch. It’s been a long time since I had a sewn #FO but I’m pretty sure this @Helens_closet #MarchDress makes up for it. I mean… even just on the hanger, this is a thing of pure Joy! - I cut View A, in the Size 14 with no modifications, fitting to the upper bust/bust as the oversized nature of the dress meant I was happy with the ease in the rest of the piece. I was a little concerned by some elements of the construction, and I definitely had to read rhetorical instructions carefully, but I am SO HAPPY with how this had turned out… even if it is still too cold to wear it 😅 - I used one side of a polycotton duvet cover and a pillowcase as my fabric, so it’s not massively drapey, but it works for this dress.
