I watched Helen’s video post of her making the pants in under an hour and decided to see if I could do it. I made it at 55 minutes (after cutting). This is the first Helen’s Closet pattern I’ve sewn and I immediately decided to buy her other new pattern the Slocan Tank. Yippee, My first 2 makes of 2025 and they are the comfiest clothes I've ever worn no exaggeration! I haven't worked with knit or stretch fabrics much so I chose the @helens__closet #SlocanTank and #NelsonPants because everyone raves about how wonderful these are to sew. The instructions were fantastic and I constructed both garments hiccup free! I used a buttery soft organic cotton and tencel jersey fabric from @corefabrics My big goal for 2025 is to focus on creating a sustainable wardrobe. This means being mindful of my fabric choices and creating lasting garments I'll love wearing over and over again. Core is now one of my new favorite fabric shops! They are transparent about how their fabrics are sourced and manufactured and do their best to carry environmentally and ethically responsible products. #sewist #memade #seamstress

New season new PJ’s (maybe that’s not a thing but it should be). Real talk, I’m a woman in her late forties experiencing a lot of fun new changes. One I’m particularly struggling with is interrupted sleeping because my body cannot regulate its temperature. Body why?? For this reason I want/ need comfortable night clothes that can breathe. Specifically I want bamboo because it is cool and highly breathable. This may be more band aid than solution but any step towards relief is welcome. I used our Bamboo / Cotton jersey in Americano, this fabric is luxuriously soft, 7.4 oz’s and has 60% 4-way stretch. I really can’t over sell how soft this fabric is. For the pants I used the #nelsonpants designed by @helens__closet. I’ve made these before and really love them. They have a wide waste band and no elastic for so much comfort. The top is a free pattern, the #ddplantain designed by @deer_and_doe_patterns patterns. This was the first time I’ve used this pattern but I really enjoyed it. They added ease for extra fabric in the bust which I haven’t seen before (I thought it was a cutting mistake at first). I definitely recommend giving this pattern a try. First two makes of the new year - a lounge wear outfit, and I love it. Both pieces are @helens__closet patterns and both fabrics are from @oursocialfabric here in Vancouver. Top - #JacksonTee , size 12, a #TnTPattern for me. Fabric is cotton jersey in a marled grey. Pants - #NelsonPants, size 12, graded out a little at the waist and lengthened 1". I could have lengthened them 1.5", then I could have done a 3/4" hem as in the pattern rather than the 3/8" that I did. Fabric is Lycra legging knit, and is so comfortable. This is another #nelsonpants from @helens__closet in the same tencel french terry I used to make my other pair of these. This was the only other color #surgefabricshop had otherwise I’d get more colors! The pattern and fabric are so comfy and drapey. I think the Nelson Pants will become a TNT. And I’ll be looking for more heavy weight tencel French terry. I also made @fridaypatterncompany free #fridaybateautop in cotton/hemp/yak jersey also from #surgefabricshop. I took apart a shirt I wasn’t wearing much and used it as the orange in this piece. The shirt is super soft and comfortable. I’ll make again but will try XL instead of L. Sizing for this pattern probably depends on the fabric. The button down is I think from Territory Ahead which I haven’t worn much so I wanted to re-evaluate it. I’d thought of hemming the bottom so it’s straight and more cropped but kind of like it the way it is with this ensemble so will keep it as is for now. I’ve been going through a lot of my shirts this month - made or bought or used to be my dad’s - thinking of straightening the hem and cropping on most. Been doing a lot of rearranging and assessing for #memademay2024 - looking at my clothes situation… Trying not to get swept up in all the MeMade sales 🙃

I made a 14, graded to 16 at the waist, shortened 2 inches at the lengthen/shorten line, view B with the tall waistband. I have lots of sensory issues with how clothes touch my belly and these are so comfortable - the top edge is folded (no seam!!), there's no elastic, and it hits almost at my ribs where it doesn't bother my belly. #memademay2024 day 3: Having a very chill day feeling comfy in my #nelsonpants by @helens__closet . I’m also sporting one of my newest makes, the @sewliberated #loeufbag. I used to make bags like maybe 20 years ago, but hadn’t made one in forever. I’m back on the bag train, baby! The L’oeuf is awesome. Small but roomy enough for my phone, earbuds, lip gloss, kleenex, a small water bottle and my kindle. It came together quite quickly and I could see it being a great gift in a pinch. I also love all the possibilities of using scrap. I definitely did not use all of my half yard of fabric for either the lining or the outer fabric. This was my first time sewing with waxed canvas and I sort of love it. I want to make more waxed canvas bags now for sure. Couple things I’d do differently next time: I used a nylon webbing and didn’t melt the ends since the directions seem to focus on using cotton webbing. I only realized after finishing it that that’s what you’re supposed to do. I’d put the pocket zipper pull on the other side of the bag next time based on the shoulder I wear it on. Ps: can you see the wee cute butterfly by my face? ❤️ ETA: label by @intenselydistracted !

Have I made the worlds ugliest pants 😂 yes, yes I have. They are a trial run before I use the ‘good’ fabric - a gorge pale blue bamboo jersey. It looks like the fabric is pulling around my bottom, it’s not - it’s just the hideous print. Fit is good, probably the easiest jersey make I have ever made. Anyone looking to sew with knits - this would be my recommended starter pattern. Ignore the jumper, I’m halfway through a matching slocan top for it. Hideous fabric but so unbelievably comfortable, I will probably continue to wear them 😂🙈🫢. Literally RIGHT off the sewing machine my comfy silly crazy @helens__closet set with my favorite tee the #jacksonpullover and the new to me #nelsonpants For the shirt I made a size 20 graded to 22 at the hips and the shorter length. The pants are the short waistband, rise shortened 1.5” and length shortened 1.5” at the mid-length view. I’m only five foot but just keep in mind how liberal the rise and waistband are! I made a size 24 which matched my measurements but I’ll probably go down a size next time, I like my loungewear with a little less ease. Yesterday was the last day of my Fall beginner sewing class! I wore my #wrenfleece from @daughterjudypatterns, favorite #nelsonpants 💕 from @helens__closet, and my big ole #allwellweekender . I’ve been teaching sewing classes for a year and a half now, and I finally feel like I have a hang of things and feel confident in my lesson plans and teaching style. I love my job!!! ✨

I made a summer PJ/Loungewear set using two patterns from @helens__closet : the #slocantank and the #nelsonpants. I’ve made several Nelsons but this was my first Slocan. I made a size 12 graded to 14 in the D cup range, crop version. Since this is for sleeping, I didn’t add a shelf bra lining but I would if I was making a non-sleep version. This fabric is a lightweight drapey spandex French terry.

A little work from home fit 🦋 My favorite comfy #nelsonpants DETAILS: Cotton spandex jersey fabric from @blackbirdfabrics Pattern from @helens__closet I made size 4, graded to a 6 at the waist and adjusted the waistband by removing around 2” of length. My first pair I made as the pattern calls for and I found it to be too high for my liking.

Lounge wear never felt so good 😊 💃🏻 I made both pieces a couple weeks ago and I’d wear it everyday if I could! Both patterns are by @helens__closet and as usual, her patterns are wonderfully easy to follow and make. 💃🏻 The top is the #lunatank and the bottoms are #nelsonpants. I made these out of a gorgeous activewear knit from @fabricmart that’s been sitting in my stash for the right garment. This did not disappoint! The fabric is amazing light weight and it gives off faux leather vibes without the weight or price. The various waist band options are all comfortable and these were made with the wide waist band. Depending on the top, I can wear it all the way up or folded over. New make, new pattern! I am such a sucker for a both a wide-legged lounge pant and a yoga waistband so when @helens__closet released the Nelson Pants, I knew what would be on my machine this weekend. These are view B, the cropped version, in a thin-striped knit I got at the @textilecentermn garage sale. I’m not sure of the composition but it’s lightweight and is super drapey like a modal or bamboo knit with some spandex. I made a straight size 14 based on my measurements and the fit is just right. Only modification I made was scooping out the front and back crotch curve based on some folds in the front and back after the first try-on. These pants are just dreamy and were a quick sew with HC’s usual fantastic directions and illustrations. With the exception of the hem, I assembled them entirely on the serger and they came together in no time. They would for sure be an accessible, great first knit project for a newer sewist. Day 1 of #memademay2025 #jacksontee by @helens__closet in black cotton jersey #nelsonpants also by @helens__closet in black bamboo stretch French terry 280g from @naturesfabrics - great fabric, super soft and cozy. I added pockets by adding a band to a curved pocket opening I cut on the front pant piece and stitching the pocket bag to the wrong side with a stretchy stitch. Last picture is what it looks like from the inside.

My second pair of #nelsonpants by @helens__closet is nearly perfect! This time I used a 60% stretch bamboo jersey in navy that I purchased from @pdxsewingstudio and the stretchiness is EXACTLY right. I added 1/4" to the rise where indicated in the pattern and also added 1/2 an inch to the length. My legs are on the longer side so if I make these again, I'll actually need to add more (1.25" maybe?) since even with the added length, they were too short to hem at 3/4" as the pattern says. I used a 3/8" hem instead and still would have been okay with about 1/4-1/2" more length. Again, the fit throughout is perfect minus my preference in length. So comfy and swishy. This was my second #memademay, but really the first I made any real goal for. I had written down a few things to think about at the start of the month: what silhouette do I reach for, what would make getting dressed easier, and what isn’t working? I had two unexpected challenges - May ended up being the second month in a row of near constant rain, and I experienced weight fluctuation. The questions I wanted to reflect on were the right questions, especially with the unforeseen circumstances, as by the end of the month I had a short stack of pieces - both me made and rtw to make improvements on! I noticed colors that I would like to wear more of for practicality and for a little sprinkle of joy, and I found love for some much neglected makes 🥰 Another goal was to get more comfortable taking pictures. I’m a reserved person and prefer being behind the camera, not in front, and struggle with body image. This Sunday spring snowstorm calls for comfy loungewear. I made another @openstudiopatterns #discodolman in a lightweight jersey and a new pair of @helens__closet #nelsonpants in a drapey cotton/rayon/spandex french terry. These are my second pair of Nelsons, my first in the full length. Love both of these patterns.
