Finished this lightweight oversized jacket early this week. I used Ankara fro @afriqueclothingstore and the pattern is @helens__closet #spindriftjacket. The pattern doesn’t require a lining but I flatlined with a satin rayon from @fabricmart. I put in the chest patch pockets with pearl snap buttons but decided to switch out the bottom patch pockets with welt pockets. #sewover50

Everyone needs a #harristweed @helens__closet #spindriftjacket when it's nearly 30 degrees, don't they? Hard to capture the amazing yellow of the tweed, and the lovely pink of the leftover cotton sateen (originally from @clothkits) I used for the innards, but they are lovely and bright. The @pigeonwishes.shops buttons are exactly right too, and I even made my own bias binding for the facings. I haven't been sharing the things I've made for the past few months because, well, I've found it difficult to feel celebratory with everything that's going on in the states right now. But, I still really love seeing what other people are making and I still really love making things, so I've decided it's time to share some recent things! This is the Spindrift Jacket by @helens__closet in 10oz denim with a handful of modifications (also wearing my second pair of Dawn Jeans that I made in January). I finished this jacket about two months ago, so I don't entirely remember all the mods, but I do remember: - I added a center back seam and back vent (last photo shows this, though the photo is a bit blurry, still figuring out lighting in the new place) - I graded down a size from armpit to hem to get a straighter side seam - I graded the sleeves out two sizes from armpit to wrist to get a looser cuff, I also shortened the sleeves by 1" - the length is between the hip length and long length (eyeballed the paper pattern pieces to get the length I wanted) - hand embroidered the inner yoke with my initials and the year Really love this jacket! Also! Both these jeans and this jacket were made possible by a new sewing machine given to me by my partner. It's a Juki HZL F-300 and if you ever want to hear me rave about it, just DM me. Six years ago today an app algorithm connected me to a dude who wasn't my type and who lived too far away. Jokes on me because I married that dude. I've been secretly working on this whenever he's not home so it's taken me a little over a month to finish up this barn jacket for him in celebration. He mentioned that his dad had a waxed canvas jacket he always admired so I thought he should have his own. I looked at a lot of barn jacket examples and decided that keeping things simple was the way to go. I ended up choosing the new Spindrift jacket pattern because it seemed like a solid fit with some of the pocket options I wanted for the front. This is the View B in a size 14 at the chest, graded to a 10 at the hips. I added 2 inches to the body length and 1.5 inches to the sleeve. I also used the welt pocket from View A and moved it over to the side of the patch pocket (which I moved down from the pattern's position at the chest). This created the more classic LL Bean barn jacket pocket situation I was seeing when I looked at examples. Next time I'll calculate the pocket lining adjustments a little more to ensure everything fits after moving it around. The other major addition I made was to fully line this jacket. The pattern does not have a lining so this was a bit of heavy lifting to get everything right. While getting the body lining right worked out great - the sleeve required some extra work. Given the actual sleeve construction I ended up sewing that lining and face fabric as one and bias binding everything at the sleeve and shoulder seam for a clean finish. 🥵 Maneuvering waxed canvas through my machine to sew down the sleeve seam allowance was easily the trickiest part of this entire pattern. 🫠 This was a lot of work but I think it turned out so beautifully. Brand new #spindriftjacket featuring FRINGE SLEEVES 🤩 Made from a @pendletonwm wool blanket, and supplemented with matching navy wool from @moodfabrics On the pockets you’ll see two silver metal details - aka snaffle bits. They’re commonly used on loafers and purse details. I love how they look, and think the pocket placement is a fun additional detail. Just before winter is over, I finished this wool #spindriftjacket. Love the finish of this pattern, even the inside looks so beautiful! I went for the longer line version and I am absolutely loving it. I’ve made it in this gorgeous quilted cotton, it’s called filly horse from @fabricgodmother . It went on as soon as I had made it , literally hot off the machine ! This burgundy obsession is ongoing!!! The only mods I made were to shorten it by a couple of inches. Finished my Spindrift Jacket by @helens__closet in a reflective soft shell from @wattlehillfabrics over the weekend and have worn it every day since 😍 Top stitching every where, bias bound seams, it has lots of beautiful finish details. Instructions are very thorough (like all of Helen’s patterns) and made it a very enjoyable sew. Me Made May, Day 2: I’m wearing my newly sewn Saundra Skirt by @hisydgraham with linen from @ewefibers 🐑🧵✨… I have been obsessed with this skirt since Sydney’s been sharing about it on her social media. I love the final product and I have another one already cut out. Yeehaw! It's taken me weeks to finish these up thanks to a lack of free time and more pressing projects. This morning I finally made myself snap in all the buttons so I could finally enjoy this cowlicious set. 🐄 The pants are another Adams in a straight size 12. Due to fabric constraints I had to cut the waistband in four pieces instead of two and (hilariously) miscalculated where center back landed so there's a fun seam just off from center that I'm hoping nobody will notice. 🫠 Same changes as last time: using the Worship Jeans back pockets and adding some length to accommodate my height. For the jacket, after previously making the longer Spindrift for my husband, I decided to make myself a cropped one. My measurements put me at a 12 but I sized down to a 10 and I'm glad I did. Given that the pattern is drafted for someone three inches shorter than me I figured this would land slightly more cropped than it did. I conservatively pinched another half inch out of the length but will probably take off even more next time. I think another 1.5 inches would get it to that more obvious cropped length I was going for. The fit is great at the shoulders and I would say the only real "issue" I have is that the sleeves are about a half inch too long. Luckily I don't plan on wearing the sleeves full length much but I might go back in at some point and shorten them up. Otherwise this pattern offers a lot of customization options between all of the pocket options. AD/ gifted Who else is beginning to notice that spring is on its way? 🐥 🌷 I love spring, but I noticed that I had a gap in my wardrobe for a light weight / mid season jacket …… enter my latest make, and my first @guthrieghani ambassador project 🙌 🙌 This beautiful fabric was very kindly gifted to me from the wonderful team at Guthrie &Ghani and it has been an absolute delight to sew with 💕 The jacket is the @helens__closet spindrift jacket- this pattern is amazing! There are three different views ( I made view B) and interchangeable pockets/collar/hood options. Helen’s closet always have the best instructions, so even though this was more of an involved make I knew I was in safe hands! I chose to bind the seams in a contrasting pre made binding which gives the jacket a nice neat finish 🪡 ✂️ Let’s talk about the fabric 🤩- I chose a cotton twill in this absolutely STUNNING dahlia red colour way. Cotton twill is a great option for this jacket, medium weight and really easy to sew with 🧵 I also chose to add a little something special on the inner yoke and the pockets by adding a pop of liberty tana lawn 🌟 🌺 💕 I absolutely love my new jacket and I know it will be worn on repeat over the coming months! As much as I’m not really participating in #memademay2025 I am keeping a daily journal of what I’m wearing and have done now for the last couple of years. 5 out of 7 days a week I have to wear a uniform, so every day is the same, though it does consist of memade jeans and a memade cardigan and my tops have been taken in to make them fit better! And they’re all colours I really don’t like on me - black. New Week, New Spindrift Jacket by @helens__closet ✨🧵🫶🏽 This jacket is so special in so many ways. I used denim scraps from jeans I have sewn over the last few months and I added embroidery. In the inner left front hem, I embroidered my kids names and birthdays. 💓 The instructions for this jacket were easy to follow and I really love the fit. This is the cropped version. Well this project has been a true labour of love and I’m absolutely delighted. This is my @helens__closet #spindriftjacket in a lovely sage coloured corduroy from @1stforfabrics and completely flatlined in this lovely white skaters fabric from my local shop @sewcraftysouthport It’s the first time I’ve ever done lining like this and all the seams are bias bound in tape made by me, all co-ordinating colours. This is the slowest sew I’ve made since I’ve been sewing and I’ve loved taking the extra time. This is a wearable toile, just, and the first time I’ve made a jacket! I bought corduroy for this project then when Simon saw Sam modelling the denim version he decided he too wanted denim. This is the @helens__closet #spindriftjacket complete with bias bound seams in the hood, snaps for fasteners and a perfect label from @little.rosy.cheeks I won’t lie, I got confused with some of the instructions, especially attaching the hood to the yoke as I’ve not done anything so technical before and I misread the instructions for attaching the sleeves. I’m definitely a visual learner but I got there in the end. I used a mix of denim as it was all I had and if I’d had more, I would have lengthened the sleeve pattern piece as they’re very much on the short side. But I’ll sort that for the next one - he wants a flannel one like the one on the pattern!! Simon really does not enjoy having pictures taken but I did get just the one and he will be turning the sleeves up as and when he wears it!!
