A bit more about my @papercutpatterns #novacoat . Unfortunately the pictures don’t do justice to the fabric - it’s got a lovely flocked texture. I made a size 3 which was a size down from my measurements because I’d heard it comes up really big. I didn’t make any other alterations; I didn’t think it was necessary as it’s a boxy shape rather than a fitted jacket. I would definitely recommend making a Nova coat if you’re one of the few sewists that haven’t like I was!

Weeeeeell... I wouldn't be me and we wouldn't be us, if I only made one Nova coat! . With the leftovers from my coat (and the extra's from Yasmina) and a bit of extra rib, I managed to make a 2nd coat for my daughter with the Papercute kids Nova version by @papercutpatterns . So now we can twin with nearly the same jackets. Mine is finished with a neon yellow biais on the inside, hers got a pink'ish biais binding. . The newest and warmest addition to my Winter wardrobe- @papercutpatterns Nova coat in luscious wool coating from @rathdownefabrics. The colour is more teal blue than the photos suggest and it’s lined with paisley cotton lawn from @spotlightstores. Finishing touch is the label from @kylieandthemachine. I’ve had the pattern and fabric for a couple of years and finally got around to sewing it. My measurements suggested Sz 4 but I should have heeded the advice of others and sized down. It’s definitely oversized. I had to resize mid-way hence some unpicking and re-cutting. For this year’s #makenine challenge I want to challenge myself and improve my sewing skills. So I’ve chosen patterns that I think will be a bit trickier but I plan to take more time over them rather than sewing ‘fast fashion’. I promised my husband I would make him a rugby shirt a long time ago and I bought this pattern but didn’t get round to it. 7. Sophie swimsuit by @closetcorepatterns. I’ve never tried to make swimwear yet so this will be a challenge but I love the vintage style of this bikini and it would be great to have a custom fit. 8. Nova coat by @papercutpatterns. I’ve seen so many of these now and I’m jealous so need my own! 9. Cavalcade travel bag by @sewsweetness. Last year, at @ansje.stoffen.naailessen sewingweekend, @lydia.the was working on a short Nova coat in this fabric. I fell in love with it straight away! ❤️ So much so, that I ordered this fabric the same weekend. . Somehow it took me months to get started. It took me some puzzling to get the print to match and I also had to call on a friend for some back up material because I was running a bit short. JORDAN QUILT We have a new @mindthemaker quilt in the shop, and it's pretty gorgeous! The Jordan quilt is pre-quilted with a peachy soft and matte shell fabric (cotton/polyester blend) and a smooth lining on the back (polyester). The wadding is a whole 160 g/m2, making this quilt thicker (and warmer), compared to the Thelma quilt. We really love the more exclusive touch of the shell fabric on Jordan, and that it's thicker and warmer. And we love the colors. There are 8 colors to choose from and on the photo here, we have Camel, Green Khaki and Fuchsia. We have soooo many plans (and dreams) of jackets and vest with Jordan! Continuing my journey into coat making - this @papercutpatterns Nova coat has been cut out for over a year before I finally took the plunge and sewed it up. Not really sure what I was worried about because this was actually a really straightforward sew! Bagging out the lining was a bit of a headscratcher but it was a case of trusting the process as it does totally work. I love the cocoon shape but didn't want the coat to drown me so I made a size 1 blended to a 2 at the hip. The fabric is a lambswool blend I bought in a closing down sale so it was an absolute steal. The lining is a @libertyfabrics cotton lawn that I've had in my stash forever and didn't know what to do with. I was assured by a dear friend that I didn’t look snobby in this first image. But if you think I do please assume I am smiling at you in my heart. 😆 Finally getting to posting the @papercutpatterns #novacoat that I made this fall from second-hand wool supplied to me by a thoughtful friend! I thought it was black at first but it’s a dark green and such a really thick and rich colour. I lined the jacket with the same wool, but ran out so used a bit of plaid wool I had in my stash. I sized waaay down because I feel like my head drowns when I wear oversized garments… but I prob sized down too far because it could stand to overlap more in the front when I close it. (I measured for a size 4 and cut a size 1). Super cool, interesting pattern. Them pockets just really take the cake for me. And I love the shape of the collar and how it sits. Sich selbst neu entdecken… … an den allermeisten Tagen fühle ich mich in meinen altgewohnten und ordentlich eingetragenen Klamotten am wohlsten. Nicht viel denken, immer wieder bewährte Schnitte in verschiedensten Ausführungen. Ihr wisst ja: Never change a running system! Zum Glück gelingt es mir doch manchmal den Mut für Neues aus mir heraus zu kitzeln. So auch dieses Mal und ich bin heilfroh, dass ich mich mal wieder an etwas ganz Anderes gewagt habe. COLORBLOCKED NOVA My first idea with the @mindthemaker Jordan Quilt was to make a colorblocked @papercutpatterns Nova Coat (formerly known as Sapporo) - and so I did... I chose Black as main color, Camel for lower front and Sienna for the upper back section. For the contrasting pieces I turned the stripes to run horizontally, and the main color vertically - both for the look and to avoid the trouble of aligning them :-) Since the quilt fabric is double sided, no lining is needed, so all raw edges are finished with bias tape (we have ready-to-use bias tape in the shell fabric available in all colors of Jordan). The inside is finished with a mix of french seams and bias tape. When I saw there's also a children's version of the Nova coat, I didn't hesitate a second! This pattern is by far in my top 3 of most favorite and most made so far! It's so simple and yet so stylish. As part of @curvy_coven_uk #coatober, I made up my very first me-made coat (and am of course, adding to the grid fashionably late). I made the much loved @papercutpatterns Nova in coat length, using very cheap but nice wool blends from the @littlelegsfabrics I always intended to mix and match the two fabrics but meant to do something slightly different originally. A slight mess up on the cutting mat led to this version and if I believed in destiny, I would think it was meant to be as I love the balance and symmetry of the combo. Also behold my truly accidental pattern matching on the front bodice with the pink check! I cut the size of my bust and then actually graded up the hips slightly as I wanted to keep the oversized feel on my bottom half too. I'm glad I did this as I think the extra space was needed; I know a lot of smaller sewists have sized down for the Nova and this wouldn't have been the right move for bottom-heavy little old me. I do really like the look of the fit but do find that putting anything in the pockets pulls the coat off my shoulders. I might add closures in the future or maybe deepen the pockets to see if this helps. It was a lot easier than I thought but I did stumble a little when attaching the lining to the outer. I have a few friends who just did a normal hem but I wanted to stick with the instructions so following a recommendation, I got the @flyingbobbins sew along and it was easy sewing from then. I pass on this recommendation as it's a really helpful course and great for learning the hemming technique! This was always intended to be a wearable toile and I am so happy with the outcome. I will make another at some point, but will enjoy this version for a bit first! Also bonus make of the #bijouberet by @untitledthoughts made using my scraps. I made a coat, this is the very wearable and much admired toile that I’ve been wearing in school all week. It’s the #papercutpatterns #novacoat with no mods, other than adding a hanging loop and it has come out a bit too big so I’ll be going down a size and grading down further at the shoulders when I make it in some spendy Mind the Maker jacquard I bought in the last #minervacrafts 20% off day. This one is made and lined with some inexpensive fabrics from the stash (the lining is from #fabriclandbristol but no idea on the outer). I love this pattern, it’s a shame there’s no button fastening to use a statement button but those pockets make up for it, and that clever little tuck on the lining that means it can’t hang badly (even if you are a centimeter short of outer fabric 😬). I’m not usually one for a coat but I think I’ll make at least a couple more of these. Depuis que je l’ai terminé, je ne la quitte plus, je la porte en intérieur comme pour sortir 😁 Et je suis ravie car elle porte suffisamment chaud pour que je puisse la porter encore quelque temps en extérieur ! Nova c’est un patron vraiment agréable à coudre: pas de difficultés hormis la doublure et plutôt rapide. Je l’ai cousu en Taille 2 dans ce sublime tissu matelassé en coton @merchantandmills . (Vous pouvez le trouver chez @coocool_mercerie dont vient d’ailleurs l’étiquette venue pimpé le tout 💕) Je trouvais que le tissu s’effilochait un peu donc j’ai entièrement surfiler chacune des pièces avant la couture. Pour la doublure c’est un tissu coton trouvé chez @mondialtissus ! A first Nova Coat, but probably not the last. I made it with a trip to see The Happy Mondays in mind, and the fabric looked so cool under the blue lights at the gig( pic 3), it twisted my melons, man. (Sorry) Construction- L LOVE THIS PATTERN!! I purchased the Nova Curve pattern, and made a size 7, short length with long sleeves. Brag alert- I managed to get all the outside pieces cut out of a 1.5 m teddy fleece remnant, by sheer force of will! It must have been quite wide, wouldn’t recommend as was mildly stressful. Go with the recommended fabric requirement people. I used a brushed Cupro fabric in a mustardy-cream from deep pre- historic era stash for the lining, it feels lovely and I don’t mind the colour inside the coat, where I can’t see it. 50% of the time it took to make this coat was spent fusing interfacing to the pieces. It’s annoying but always with the coat making comes the endless fusible interfacing. The instructions are great, and nothing seemed beyond my ability, despite being ‘intermediate’. Love the curved seams and two- piece front and pocket feat of engineering 👏🏼 Random additional comment- I’ve stopped wasting money and hope of it working on proper fabric marking pens, chalk, etc in favour of my sons washable felt tips that smell of fruit, they work much better, smell lovely, and don’t cost a fortune. I’ve been wanting to make the Nova Coat from @papercutpatterns for a long time (3+ years long, judging by the date I bought this pattern 🤣). I’ve struggled with what size to make after reading that it’s quite oversized. I’m 61” in height and I wondered where and how much to shorten. I had a total of 2.5 meters of this boiled wool viscose blend fabric and made a Tessuti Berlin Coat posted 11/4/22 which used up 1.5ish meters. I just had 1 meter and some larger scraps left and which could only fit a short length size 1 Nova with short sleeves. I went for it and figured if the sizing didn’t work out, then at least I knew. BUT…I love this sizing and length…this is my new favorite coat!!! I measure into Papercut Patterns size 3. I think the Nova is designed to be oversized, and I think sizing for the Nova is personal preference. I love the short sleeve length which on me is nearly full length. I finished this a week ago, took pictures the morning the first time I wore it to work but the pictures were blurry because it was a full on drizzle/shower going on. These pictures were taken after 2 full days of wearing plus 1 night of sleeping in it (because it’s warm and cozy); thus the wrinkles! I used the lapped and topstitched dreaming method utilized in the Tessuti Berlin Jacket. The sleeve hems are faced while the hems are raw. I wish I faced the pocket openings…next time! 🧥💟 Nova coat 💟🧥 So many firsts for this sewing project! 💟 First time sewing a coat 💟 First time sewing a lining 💟 First time sewing with a Woolen blanket I bought this fabulous rainbow Woolen blanket at an op shop on holiday in new Zealand with the purpose of turning it into a jacket. But I had procrastinated because it looked good on the couch, and I didn't know which coat pattern to sew. I actually bought the Eden coat from #tillyandthebuttons but hadn't gotten around to printing it. Then I caught up with a friend who was wearing her #novacoat. I loved it! But it was a bit too oversized for me, and then papercut brought out Papercute and a kids sized Nova! It was a relatively easy sew for someone who hasn't made a coat or lining before, and I love how the outer shell comes together. Sewing with the Woolen blanket was fine with a sharp needle, but where there was a double seam was a bit fiddly. I was worried I wouldn't get much wear out of it because it's sprig in Melbourne but that means the weather is still super up and down, and the wool is warm but breathable so has been perfect for day and night. @tessa_aitch taught me about #fancyguts and this fancy guts is a #libertylawn from @wearethefabricstore, which was the perfect weight and feel as a lining. Pattern: Nova coat from @papercutpatterns. Size: I measured as a kids size 12 and made a size 11 but will make a 10 next time. Fabric: pure wool blanket from op shop. Lining: Liberty lawn from The Fabric Store Labels: original blanket label, and 'hand fucking made' from @kylieandthemachine

@papercutpatterns #papercutpatternsnovacoat First attempt at the Nova Coat. Bought this pattern when it was still called Sapporo.. thought it was finally time! Unsure why it took so long for me to make, but I’m glad I did! I did a size 6 short version. I think I should have sized towards the finish garment measurements. A bit oversized on me, so my the next make of this, I’ll most likely size down to a 4. Had this grey fabric forever & knew that I didn’t have enough for the entire jacket. I paired it with a green quilted fabric I had in my collection to make what I name this “Minty Cookies & Creme”! Perfect color & weight for Spring. Although the weather in SF is sunny, the chill in the air still lingers. Getting ready for AW23! #novacoat by @papercutpatterns, deadstock fabric from @wearethefabricstore double faced wool blend. Lining was supposed to be acetate but switched to cotton muslin my son chose for me during our time together at @spotlightstores 🥰 loved the pattern, wonderful sew! My second gift make this Christmas was the Nova Coat by Papercut Patterns for my secret Santa 🎅 This was a lot easier to make than I imagined. Of course a few things were new and difficult to me but for the most part the pattern holds your hand. Anything I didn’t understand was solved from a quick YouTube search. The fabric was purchased at Minerva. I used Minerva Core Range Boucle Textured Coating Fabric in the colour bottle green. For the lining I used Art Gallery Fabrics Boscage Rayon Challis Fabric Lush Rainforest. The boucle was very nice to sew with once I figured out my stitch tension. I will 100% be remaking this pattern. Definitely for myself and now maybe for some other family members who were “bottle green” 😉with envy after seeing my aunt’s. It was a very good gift make as I didn’t need to know my aunt’s exact measurements. There’s a good reason the Nova Coat by @papercutpatterns is such a popular make. It not only looks chic, it comes together amazingly easily. I’ve had this pattern for probably two years—long enough that it still had the original name. Was finally spurred to make it based on a need for a coat that would accommodate all my big sleeves and it does that for sure! Made up in a wool twill deadstock from @saltlakesewciety and lined in bemberg rayon. I went with a sz 4 per my measurements despite so very many posts of others who had sized down. I wanted the full cocoon effect—to be able to wrap it around me—and I’m happy with the size choice. I did more internal tacking and slipstitching of the lining than the pattern called for but otherwise no changes. Worn over a Kingston sweater and Lander pants. As part of @curvy_coven_uk #coatober, I made up my very first me-made coat (and am of course, adding to the grid fashionably late). I made the much loved @papercutpatterns Nova in coat length, using very cheap but nice wool blends from the @littlelegsfabrics I always intended to mix and match the two fabrics but meant to do something slightly different originally. A slight mess up on the cutting mat led to this version and if I believed in destiny, I would think it was meant to be as I love the balance and symmetry of the combo. Also behold my truly accidental pattern matching on the front bodice with the pink check! I cut the size of my bust and then actually graded up the hips slightly as I wanted to keep the oversized feel on my bottom half too. I'm glad I did this as I think the extra space was needed; I know a lot of smaller sewists have sized down for the Nova and this wouldn't have been the right move for bottom-heavy little old me. I do really like the look of the fit but do find that putting anything in the pockets pulls the coat off my shoulders. I might add closures in the future or maybe deepen the pockets to see if this helps. It was a lot easier than I thought but I did stumble a little when attaching the lining to the outer. I have a few friends who just did a normal hem but I wanted to stick with the instructions so following a recommendation, I got the @flyingbobbins sew along and it was easy sewing from then. I pass on this recommendation as it's a really helpful course and great for learning the hemming technique! This was always intended to be a wearable toile and I am so happy with the outcome. I will make another at some point, but will enjoy this version for a bit first! Also bonus make of the #bijouberet by @untitledthoughts made using my scraps. My first ever coat, and a little me selfie at the same time to put a swift STOP to those awful hackers 👋🏼🤚🏼 (photo creds to the dort @tuesdayroseroberts 🤍) Anyway, I needed a cosy coat. This was a relatively straightforward make for me; no buttons or zips always a bonus, nothing too fitted, and everything would have been great had I not decided to lengthen it 3 inches once the fabric had already been cut. But a lovely make still the same, something I know I’ll will wear all the time, and a good welcome back into the world that makes me happy. The big pockets are a thing of true beauty and the boiled wool really lovely and warm. The silky, paisley lining I found in a brilliant fabric shop I found in Edinburgh @edinburghfabrics when we went to see our girl at uni back in November (if you’re ever in Edinburgh, do go. It’s a real Aladdin’s cave). The 3/4 sleeves I would make longer for a winter coat next time, although this length would be perfect for a summer make to wear with jeans and T-shirts. More makes coming this next year hopefully. I’m still trying to learn, pushing to try something new every time. But I love it so. I’m always full of whizzing ideas. What shall I try making next? Dashing off to see the Boston Pops in a favorite make from five years ago. It’s a hack of the Papercut Patterns Nova Coat, made from silk/wool (with cherries!) and lined with hammered silk. (BTW I don’t recommend hammered silk for lining because it kept stretching. But it’s great now that it’s over!) A shoutout to Past Julie for the hand-done pick-stitching around the edges, which keeps the lining under control. This was my late husband’s favorite make of mine, and out of the blue tonight my son said “I love that jacket.” 🥲 Looking forward to a fun night of music at Boston’s old-school Symphony Hall. #papercutpatternsnovacoat

I’m finally getting around to posting about this #novacoat from @papercutpatterns. My inspiration was that “just rolled out of bed to walk my kids to school” look and I used an old family quilt that was starting to fall apart in places. Modifications: I did not cut a liner and opted to bind the upper and lower front panels together. I didn’t attach any sleeve options, enlarged the pockets to fit my iPhone, cut a few inches off the length, and I altered the neckline of the upper front pieces. I suspect I could have just used the liner pattern pieces instead but it was simple enough to adjust. Overall a very easy sew! #papercutpatternsnovacoat

This cocoon coat was made using gorgeous factory waste tweed and lined using inexpensive flannel for warmth. The Tweed sample was a generous 3 1/2 meters long and created to sample 5 different colourways. Tricky to line up the colourway ‘stripes’, but I think it works. What are your thoughts? Trying to by artistically stylish for @deeploveopera. #novacoat was optional, turtleneck was required, and the #bathroommirrorselfie probably hurt my cause. This #novajacket by @papercutpatterns has a totally different vibe from my quilted one, so I’m loving that versatility. Size 2, long length and long sleeves. I meant to lengthen the sleeves so they’d reach my wrists but I forgot so… I actually totally meant to keep them slightly cropped. Fabric is a wool-ish tweed-y number from @cleveroctopus, and the navy lining is from @savers_thrift. So 1000000000 bonus points to me for #sustainability. I struggled with connecting the lining to the bottom of the coat. Like, the instructions made sense? I just winged (wang? wung) parts of that process and it’s attached now so it’s fine. I made a coat, this is the very wearable and much admired toile that I’ve been wearing in school all week. It’s the #papercutpatterns #novacoat with no mods, other than adding a hanging loop and it has come out a bit too big so I’ll be going down a size and grading down further at the shoulders when I make it in some spendy Mind the Maker jacquard I bought in the last #minervacrafts 20% off day. This one is made and lined with some inexpensive fabrics from the stash (the lining is from #fabriclandbristol but no idea on the outer). I love this pattern, it’s a shame there’s no button fastening to use a statement button but those pockets make up for it, and that clever little tuck on the lining that means it can’t hang badly (even if you are a centimeter short of outer fabric 😬). I’m not usually one for a coat but I think I’ll make at least a couple more of these.
