I’ve made another favourite summer dress pattern of mine, the Axis dress by Papercut patterns. I’ve made it once before and have made all the fit adjustments required so this was an easy sew. I did fully line the dress including the skirt and I added inseam pockets. This is made in a soft linen/ cotton blend from Fabricland. It’s very lightweight, hence the reason for lining the dress. I plan on wearing it to an outdoor graduation event at the end of the month. I am proud of myself for actually sewing up all my graduation dresses early and I’m not rushing the project due to lack of time. That was this years New Year’s sewing resolution. Plan well in advance and execute plan without getting distracted by other ideas and new patterns! My sewing room is currently being used as a painting room so once that’s cleaned up I’ll take a picture wearing this dress. It’s hard to hang the Axis dress properly due to the open back so this was my idea to put a loop on the inside of the skirt and use a ribbon threw the loop while on the hanger. I also made the dress that I wore at my sister’s wedding, but not until hers was finished, which meant I had two days to make mine 😅 and of course I changed my mind halfway through, having to start over the day before we left. A little stressful, but resulting in an outfit I love and will be proud to wear again in the future 🙌 I chose a simple silhouette so that the beautiful fabric could be the 🌟. The top is from the #axisdress pattern, and the skirt is a simple #selfdrafted bias skirt. The top is meant to be worn wrapped around and tied in the front, but I also love how it looks tied in the back - will just have to find a way to hide the gap in the right side seam (that the wrap passes through) if I wear it this way. I did a small bust adjustment on the top (reducing the dart size) and also found the straps were much too short for me, so I lengthened them with two identical bracelets my mom found in her jewelry box 😁 The amazing fabric is one of several that was gifted to me from a local seamstress’s stash after she passed away. It’s silk, and I think the two-toned pattern makes it a damask(?) weave. I don’t really know, but I sure do love it 😍. If you watched all the stories about the making of my sister’s dress you know I made a lot of toiles and half-toiles. Almost all the fabric I used for those were also from the same lady’s stash. She used to own a bridal shop and had many bolts of white satin fabrics. Thank you for all of your lovely comments on the Axis dress I made for last weekends NCH party 🌸 I’m so glad I decided to wear it in the end, even though it didn’t make me feel very confident! I absolutely love this pattern & the finished dress, but after spending all of winter in lots of layers I think it was a bit of a shock to the system to put on something so form fitting! 😬 But I fought the fear and did it anyway 👗 I decided to make the split skirt version and I honestly loved the process of making this pattern! One thing I found different but actually really loved was that you prepare all of the pieces first and then attach them in one go, rather than attaching as you go along. I’ve never worked with a pattern like that before! Two years ago, @ebonyh made a ✨gorgeous✨ chartreuse linen-viscose blend @papercutpatterns #axisdress, and I immediately ordered the supplies to replicate it. I fiiiinally got around to actually making my version last month, because I needed something to wear to a wedding, and wow, I really love it! I used linen-viscose slub from @blackbirdfabrics. My measurements for now are B39.5”, W32.5”, and H43”, 5’ 7” tall, and I sewed the size 5. (#sewlimitedsizing, the pattern goes to a 46.5” bust, 48.75” hip.) I’m actually between the 5 and 6 in the waist/hips, but rather than grading I just sewed smaller seam allowances from the waist down, and it worked out fine. I ended up with a lot of gaping at the armscye, and fixed it by adding a dart, but I’m now thinking I should’ve first shortened the straps, and then assessed whether a dart was needed. Oh well. I’m just tuning into the fact that I have a short torso and need to make adjustments for it—kinda blows my mind that I’ve been wearing clothes forever and sewing for myself for 10+ years and this has just dawned on me! Anyway, you can see how the bodice is a little long in the back—maybe also a swayback adjustment would’ve been good? The only annoying thing about wearing the dress is that the skirt part flips out sometimes and sits on top of the wrap bodice pieces, and I’m self conscious about so I’m constantly touching my back to see if it’s happening. 🤦‍♀️ Demonstration in the second video. Has this happened to others who have made this pattern? It’s actually much less of a big deal than I imagined, now that I can actually see it. Story of my life, and everyone else’s. It looks fine! We all look fine! Stop awkwardly touching your back every 30 seconds and have fun! No, but I did have fun. It was a small backyard wedding on Cape Cod where it was possible to have plenty of distance, and it felt safe. Family photo of us all dressed up at the end. Grad 2 “fit”. This is the Axis dress, Papercut Patterns. I altered the pattern slightly by lining the whole dress ( thanks to What Bella Made for her step by step YouTube video) as well as I added pockets. Again, another outdoor event. I guess I’m recently liking headbands and scarves because I keep wearing them! This is made from 100% textured linen and cotton and lined in the same, from Fabricland,Kamloops. It’s still in the store currently. I loved it so much I went back last week and picked up some more for a blouse. This is another favourite summer pattern of mine and I know it’s a very popular summer dress pattern that’s been out for awhile and I consider a good classic. #crosbybiasdress and #papercutpatternsaxis made for a lovely sister duo for our brother's wedding. My sis came to town planning to borrow one of my dresses. She liked a version of the Papercut Patterns Axis dress I had made for myself, but fit wasn't quite right. So what did we do? Make a new version w/less than 48 hours to go before the wedding. Which would have been fine if I didn't have a house full of family, 3 people including myself recovering from various illnesses wearing masks (as pictured in progress photo 😂), and my own Crosby bias dress not quite finished. We thrive in the chaos. And ultimately got it done (in the car ride to the wedding with some final hand sewing for the ruffle on my Crosby). Crosby bias dress was a lovely silk charmeuse and Papercut Patterns Axis dress was a linen cotton blend. Added the ruffle to Crosby dress in the last moment to spice it up a bit - I will need to go back and actually attach it nicely, because it is not pretty under the hood.

I've long admired pictures/makes of the Axis Dress from @papercutpatterns for its slim silhouette, front slit, and wrap back. I used the Glowing Floral border print in stretch cotton woven from @blendedthreadfabrics to make my first Axis Dress. I know I needed adjustments for my shape with my #WaistBiggerThanHip measurements (meaning I grade up at least 1-2 sizes for my waist compared to my bust and hip measurements) and my height of 61" so I did some online research (reading reviews or posts) about this dress. I ended up removing 1" from the bodice height (under the bust and above the waist), removing 5.5" from the skirt length from the bottom, lowering the neckline 3/4" and adding that amount to the back straps, and grading up one size at the waist (so I used one size for bust and hip and one size up for the waist). I am pretty happy with all these adjustments but next time I will also narrow the waist ties a bit as I feel it's pretty wide at the waist. This stretch cotton woven is a joy to sew with. Normally when I topstitch stretch woven, I get a wobbly, rippled seam. I don't know if you can see, but the topstitched front slit didn't give me any issues, whew. The dress that gave me the sewing bug! I rather ambitiously decided I would make my wedding dress in January 2022 with very little sewing experience. Sewing is - unsurprisingly - the #1 hobby in the Den, so we're doing a little Sewing Gem sewing project! Gemma and Anne-Marie are both going to make the very elegant Papercut Patterns Axis Dress. These are the fabrics they've chosen - one dress will be made from the lovely Lady McElroy 100% cotton lawn in Navy Prosecco Fizz, and the other will be made from the cheerful Calypso Blue Abstract Flowers in a cotton/linen blend.⁠ ⁠ Can you guess who chose which fabric? In early spring I had cargo pants on my mind so bought a piece of stretch cotton drill for the project. Unfortunately I didn’t take notice of the width and couldn’t get pants out of the piece I had purchased and wouldn’t you know it, it had sold out! I put it in my stash and it has now become my second Papercut Patterns Axis Skirt. I wanted this skirt to have a utility look without the whole cargo pocket going on so added patch pockets to the front and belt loops. I used a metal zip and exposed it. In true utility style I finished it with chunky top stitching. Because this is a neutral solid skirt I couldn’t resist adding a pop of print. Happy first day of spring! It appears the weather got the memo because despite the frosty start it is shaping up to be a stunner at 18 degrees celcius. It is the perfect weather to debut my #papercutaxisskirt. I made this as a dress a couple of years ago but it never occurred to me to make the skirt until recently. A remnant piece of non stretch denim left over from jeans that I wanted out of my stash proved the catalyst. I didn’t have to make any alterations to this to make it fit except take a little from the waist which is standard for me. The zip I chose to make white to match my top stitching because it was a recycled one also from my stash and rather than hide it I made a feature of it. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. It will provide just enough warmth for my legs in these cool mornings while still embracing the new season. A lace @atelierjupe Este Shirt with contrast collar, cuffs and button placket. I had to chop up the front pattern piece to create a contrast button placket, and I didn’t do a double layer on the upper back. However, these were the only mods to this fab pattern! I wanted the contrast fabric to ‘frame’ the beautiful lace. The lace is from @woolcresttextiles and something I’d had my eye on for 3 months. Made myself the #Axisdress from papersut patterns from a beautiful green linen from Fabricana. I widened the top by an inch so that my bra straps would sit under the straps. I also wanted to wear the dress either tied in the front or with a bow in the back but did not like the gaping fabric at the side. So, I added a small flap of fabric inside the bodice to cover the side slit. Getting ready for holidays.. a couple of tops I’ve made recently. 1 - New Look 6518 in ikat from @raystitch many moons ago. Was going to make the shorts too but didn’t have quite enough fabric. The #axisdress by @papercutpatterns was one of the first patterns I bought but it’s sat in my to-do pile for a couple of years now 🫠. I finally got round to making it up a couple of weeks ago and I’m so glad I did. I made a size 3 grading to 4 at the hips but did hack it to make a separate top. This wasn’t hard to do but did involve a little bodging on the top waistline. A separate skirt pattern with instructions is included with the dress so no hack needed. Fabric is a linen look (polyester) from the £/kg at @abakhanfabrics Instructions are easy to follow and the pictures are very helpful. The top closes with a simple tie in the back (very beginner friendly -not so bra friendly) and the skirt has a zip closure. Interesting the back bodice is lined but the front is just faced, I might fully line it next time but the way the pieces fit together means the facing does stay neatly in place without prompting. The fit is a couple cm big on the waist but otherwise very good. Pictures were taken when waiting for a ferry to take us from Valletta to Sliema for dinner at a restaurant called the Chophouse. Made some adjustments to the fit this time on my 2nd @papercutpatterns Axis dress. Last time I graded between size 2,3 and 4 but this time I graded between 2 & 3 (I added a couple of mm to the side seams of the skirt just in case I needed a bit more room as the seam allowance is small for this pattern. I also took out about 1.5cm above the bust and lowered the neckline by 2cm as well. I did it this way rather than just lowering the neckline so that the bust darts and armholes sat in the right place. With the previous version I made there was also some gaping at the back so I took around 1.5cm out from the back piece side seams but I made that adjustment later on by pinning in place and fitting to my body. Overall I think the fit is much better than the previous version I made so despite the extra effort I would do those adjustments again on my next one. Fabric is a silk viscose bought in the @libertyfabrics sale. This pattern goes up to size UK20/48” hip #axisdress #papercutaxis

On Saturday night we got dressed up and headed out for a posh dinner to wrap up what was such a lovely few days. And I used it as an excuse to make myself a new dress! . The pattern was a bit of a last minute decision of the @papercutpatterns Axis Dress and I’m glad I chose to go with it. The construction for the wrap is very clever and also allows for a really neat fit. Also means I made ZERO modifications to the pattern and fit (yes you read that correctly and I know, who even am I?!). . Fabric is the lovely Posie in Chestnut by @atelierbrunette which I bought from @stitch_and_stash_uk, a lovely new online store I stumbled upon online looking for this fabric. Shipping was quick and I ended up having a lovely conversation with store owner Jenny so would thoroughly recommend! . Final shoutout to @patternprintinggirl who I used to print the PDF, great value and quick service there too, particularly on a short run print as Natasha doesn’t have a minimum order charge. . All in I am really pleased with this make and think that the Axis pattern could be really versatile for casual or dressed up. So I’ve finally made my first #axisdress by @papercutpatterns 👗 I always do a practise run so I can figure out how to construct the pattern and deal with fiddly bits I might find tricky. 🧵 Sooo.... I was being a bit too optimistic and made this far too small. So my next move is to adjust the pattern and merge size 2 bodice with size 3 waist & hips. 🧵 The neckline is too high on me so I will also be slashing the front bodice pattern and making it lower. 🧵 Apart from having to make a few tweaks, I think the dress is really pretty and I can’t wait to make another one that will actually fit me.

A face of pure JOY ❤️ What an absolute delight to stand by one of my oldest friends on her wedding day, with the best company and in a dress I made. This dress was a mission (I lost count of the number of times I put the fabric in dye) but I finished it and got to say 'I made it' all day. AXIS DRESS | PAPERCUT PATTERNS Okay adjustments! 1. Raised the bust darts by 4.5cm 2. Shortened the shoulder strap by 5cm 3. Shortened the bodice length by 5cm - which also meant shortening the back pieces to match 4. Adjusted the armscye by taking 2-3cm out and also scooped it out quite a bit to fit my narrow shoulders/chest 5. Fear of invisible zippers be gone - thanks to the #axisskirt by @papercutpatterns what a cracker of a pattern! This is the A line version of the skirt. I’ve made two of these in the past 2 weeks as well as a pencil cut version. I added self drafted, tencel lined pockets to the front and copied pockets from some jeans for the back. The whole skirt is top stitched using a dark navy regular thread in the bobbin, top stitching thread for the spool and a longer stitch length of 3 - it really makes the decorative top stitching pop. Diagnosis is now top stitching addiction. Fabric is a 9oz cotton spandex denim with 10% stretch. I picked it up as a remnant for $6 from @wearethefabricstore and the invisible zipper is from @reversegarbage . To put that in perspective I think I spent more on the top stitching thread than all the rest. The #papercutaxis top. This was intended to be a dress but luckily I started with the top and decided to leave it there. The neckline looks different on me that I was expecting and makes me feel 90s. Am I too picky? I always seem to have odd comments about what is wrong! As a SBA I removed a vertical strip from the middle of the pattern. The back strap gapes but I have decided not to care! I’ve actually made a bias cut skirt from the same fabric so could wear it like a dress - I will share the set once it’s hemmed (so in two years time probably). I will make this pattern again once I’ve figured out what I don’t like! And despite my complaints it’s perfectly fine and will get worn in summer.

I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been busy sewing summer dresses (my favourite thing to sew). This is my second version of the @papercutpatterns #axisdress and I love it as much as the first. It’s so flattering. I generally lower the neckline slightly and raise the slit to show off a bit more leg, but otherwise, no mods. My Christmas dress was the #axisdress from @papercutpatterns made in a stunning patterned linen from @spotlightstores I love it when a decision is easy to make, and this fabric was a very easy decision. I just couldn’t walk away from it. And I could see it clearly as an Axis dress. It’s a pencil skirt with a wrap top that’s attached at the front but not at the back. You can either tie it at the back or at the front. But I prefer the front. I had to cut a bit from the front neckline as it was slightly too high and I raised the slit, and then had to put new darts in the back skirt as it was far too loose when finished. But that was it for mods. After not being completely sure about it when I finished, I now love it. I think the invisible zip at the back could have been slightly more “invisible” but I did my best without having an invisible zipper foot. The 30-year-old Bernina machine I’m using is going well! My baby bro got married 2 weeks ago today…. So naturally I had to make a dress for the occasion! I used some (gifted!) @iseefabric mid weight linen in the most amazing blue. It’s crazy soft and delish to work with. The dress pattern is the #axisdress by @papercutpatterns — super interesting style — especially the cross-over in back. I found it fit large in the butt and hip region and had to take it in at least 3/4” per side. Still could be more fitted around the back waist band (you can see a bit of sagging there in pic # 2). The best part of this pattern is hands-down the cross over back. Love that. I preemptively did a sba (small bust adjustment) on the bodice and it fit me really well. I just found the neck a bit too high and the top front too wide near my arm pits, so ended up taking it it a bit all around there. . . . Much more exciting than the dress was the fact that I had the incredible privilege of officiating. 😭. I adore my siblings so much and cannot even begin to articulate how deep my affection for each of them is (I have 3 biologically and many more in-law too!!)… so it was a profound thing to preside over this wedding in this fashion. Felt sacred (i mean, beyond the fact that it’s actually a pastoral role… haha). Love you so much @bradenpierce and @chelseachantel 💕💕💕 . . Photo cred for final pic goes to Darryl Delamont 📸!

Took my new #memade skirt on a night out to Café Rouge at @centerparcsmedia_ this weekend. Had a great time and this light viscose skirt was just what I needed on a warm evening! This skirt is a heavily hacked @papercutpatterns #axisdress I'm thinking about making another one because this is SO nice for summer. Here is some summer sewing in February! . . . This is the @papercutpatterns #axisdress made as separates. We had barely any daylight left for these pictures, so my apologies if they came out a little shadowy. This is the fabric my sweet husband bought for me this Christmas from @blackbirdfabrics . . . When I initially set to work on this project, I couldn’t tell that there was a wrong side to the fabric, and I made the entire bodice wrong-side out. This is definitely the result of having poor lighting in my sewing space. Luckily my hubby bought a ton of this fabric, so even after two completed bodices and a skirt, I still have some fabric leftover and am considering making a home decor project with it. . . . I really enjoyed how straightforward this pattern is; the outcome is somehow wearable and simple but impactful. We have been having a bit of a heat wave for the past few days, so I got to wear the separates together instead of the skirt with a sweater or turtleneck! The back is a beautiful design. Who else likes to see dress guts? 🙋🏻‍♀️ This pattern is particularly interesting from the inside because of the construction of the wrap back - it’s almost like a skirt and top but the top is attached at the front. It’s the @papercutpatterns Axis (size range UK 6-20, max hip is 48”). I made it in fabric I bought from @newcrafthouse over a year ago. I was initially going to use it for a coat lining but couldn’t bring myself to hide it away. The print has people in space on it but because it’s large scale it sort of just looks geometric up close. I considered using french seams but because it’s a fairly heavy satin I thought it might create too much bulk so I just overlocked them. So glad I ended up using it for a dress and I think it will be the perfect Christmas party dress paired with gold heels. #newcrafthousefabric #papercutaxisdress

finished my axis dress today! I love how this turned out. I think the construction of this is quite clever with the wrap back bodice. pattern instructions plus blog sew along from papercut were super easy to follow! this was also my first zipper install, and I don’t really know why I was so intimidated. fabric is linen viscose noil from @blackbirdfabrics which is just beautiful. so much drape! but everything I love about linen! pattern by @papercutpatterns with a 2” short torso adjustment my measurements: bust: 40 in waist: 34 in hip: 42 in mostly made a size six, but graded between 5 and 6 between the underarm and waist on the bodice pieces. next time, I will also take in the back waist of the skirt a little bit— it’s slightly too big but I think the bodice hides it well enough. #axisdress #papercutaxisdress #blackbirdfabrics

I made this dress in the winter time and it's finally seeing the outside world! It's a viscose/linen noil from @melanatedfabricsco made into the #papercutaxisdress. I made the neckline a bit more narrow as it was more flattering for my upper body. THEN I ran into the issue of not having anything to wear for support that wouldn't show underneath 😅. I'm wearing one of those plastic clip devices into which you slide your brastraps to make it a racerback, but in the FRONT. I didn't realize until my friends took these photos how loose the waistband is. The size chart was true to size, and the grading I did was totally unnecessary. Nevertheless, once I perfected the FBA and darts, it was very easy to sew up this dress! I plan on sewing this up again in a midweight printed linen next💃🏽

A X I S // it’s taken a year but I finally finished this gorgeous dress because I finally had events to wear it to 🖤 and now I’ve worn it twice in two days!! Last night I went over to @newcrafthouse to celebrate their fabric shop opening and their new space. I made this dress in my lunch breaks this week and finished it yesterday in time! The fabric was from @newcrafthouse last year; it is satin with a large scale scene of people in space but up close it just looks geometric. I only realised after I cut it out that there were two space people on the front skirt looking at each other 😅 I don’t think you can really see it though with the ties hanging. And at least it wasn’t at the back because ya know… men on the moon 🍑 The pattern is @papercutpatterns Axis and goes up to UK size 20/ hip 48”. I graded from size 2-3 and it’s a close fit. I also took some length out of the bodice and lowered the neckline. And I made a little #PisaBowBag to match in velvet and lined in the fabric leftover from my dress. Weather inappropriate dress 2/2. I got this #katiekortman for @neridahansenfabrics cotton sateen fabric from a sewist who was having a de-stash. Usually when I have something this special it just sits in my fabric collection for ages because I’m too scared to commit to a pattern, but I resolved to be more decisive this time. Pattern is the #axisdress by @papercutpatterns which I thought was a good choice to show off the print. I fully lined the entire thing (the original pattern calls for just the back bodice) for a cleaner finish. My first take on the newly released #axisskirt by @papercutpatterns. Such a simple and flattering design. I played a little with the pattern - added loops, tie and a detachable self drafted ‘Half Moon Purse’. Inspired by a skirt designed by Olive Clothing. I’m wearing a size 10. On Saturday night we got dressed up and headed out for a posh dinner to wrap up what was such a lovely few days. And I used it as an excuse to make myself a new dress! . The pattern was a bit of a last minute decision of the @papercutpatterns Axis Dress and I’m glad I chose to go with it. The construction for the wrap is very clever and also allows for a really neat fit. Also means I made ZERO modifications to the pattern and fit (yes you read that correctly and I know, who even am I?!). . Fabric is the lovely Posie in Chestnut by @atelierbrunette which I bought from @stitch_and_stash_uk, a lovely new online store I stumbled upon online looking for this fabric. Shipping was quick and I ended up having a lovely conversation with store owner Jenny so would thoroughly recommend! . Final shoutout to @patternprintinggirl who I used to print the PDF, great value and quick service there too, particularly on a short run print as Natasha doesn’t have a minimum order charge. . All in I am really pleased with this make and think that the Axis pattern could be really versatile for casual or dressed up.
