As part of @curvy_coven_uk #coatober, I made up my very first me-made coat (and am of course, adding to the grid fashionably late). I made the much loved @papercutpatterns Nova in coat length, using very cheap but nice wool blends from the @littlelegsfabrics I always intended to mix and match the two fabrics but meant to do something slightly different originally. A slight mess up on the cutting mat led to this version and if I believed in destiny, I would think it was meant to be as I love the balance and symmetry of the combo. Also behold my truly accidental pattern matching on the front bodice with the pink check! I cut the size of my bust and then actually graded up the hips slightly as I wanted to keep the oversized feel on my bottom half too. I'm glad I did this as I think the extra space was needed; I know a lot of smaller sewists have sized down for the Nova and this wouldn't have been the right move for bottom-heavy little old me. I do really like the look of the fit but do find that putting anything in the pockets pulls the coat off my shoulders. I might add closures in the future or maybe deepen the pockets to see if this helps. It was a lot easier than I thought but I did stumble a little when attaching the lining to the outer. I have a few friends who just did a normal hem but I wanted to stick with the instructions so following a recommendation, I got the @flyingbobbins sew along and it was easy sewing from then. I pass on this recommendation as it's a really helpful course and great for learning the hemming technique! This was always intended to be a wearable toile and I am so happy with the outcome. I will make another at some point, but will enjoy this version for a bit first! Also bonus make of the #bijouberet by @untitledthoughts made using my scraps. I made a coat, this is the very wearable and much admired toile that I’ve been wearing in school all week. It’s the #papercutpatterns #novacoat with no mods, other than adding a hanging loop and it has come out a bit too big so I’ll be going down a size and grading down further at the shoulders when I make it in some spendy Mind the Maker jacquard I bought in the last #minervacrafts 20% off day. This one is made and lined with some inexpensive fabrics from the stash (the lining is from #fabriclandbristol but no idea on the outer). I love this pattern, it’s a shame there’s no button fastening to use a statement button but those pockets make up for it, and that clever little tuck on the lining that means it can’t hang badly (even if you are a centimeter short of outer fabric 😬). I’m not usually one for a coat but I think I’ll make at least a couple more of these. Here’s another make- the Nova coat/jacket by Papercut Patterns, in the snuggliest teddy fleece from Fabric Godmother and lined in a brown cotton Things I learned to love about sewing with teddy fleece: -You don’t have to press seams with the iron because heat would melt the fibres, so you just finger press instead -Lack of precision is really easily hidden by the fleece -Covers the entire room in what looks like a light snowfall. #festive This fleece is probably going to function as a housecoat for the colder seasons- for those days I’d like to be wearing a dressing gown, but want to elevate things *slightly* In the spirit of homeliness, here are pictures I took in my room/ functional storage closet. Finally finished a @papercutpatterns Nova coat this week (my first time with this pattern). It’s a fabulous and clever design. This is the Papercute Kids range in a size 12 - a present for a petite friend who really deserves a break right now. If a warm cosy hug could be turned into a pattern, this is it! I hope she enjoys wearing it x The wool blend is a Brushed Block Jacquard Coating from @wearethefabricstore. Wishing I had bought a little more - the texture and colour are glorious! COLORBLOCKED NOVA My first idea with the @mindthemaker Jordan Quilt was to make a colorblocked @papercutpatterns Nova Coat (formerly known as Sapporo) - and so I did... I chose Black as main color, Camel for lower front and Sienna for the upper back section. For the contrasting pieces I turned the stripes to run horizontally, and the main color vertically - both for the look and to avoid the trouble of aligning them :-) Since the quilt fabric is double sided, no lining is needed, so all raw edges are finished with bias tape (we have ready-to-use bias tape in the shell fabric available in all colors of Jordan). The inside is finished with a mix of french seams and bias tape. Upcycled denim jacket I wanted to make a denim scrap jacket with a "clean" look, so I made strips of the legs from old (already partly cut up) jeans, choose a pattern with beautiful lines instead of a classic denim jacket and added a few pieces of new denim to calm down the stripeyness and enhance the lines of the pattern. It was such a fun and inspiring project! I made size 1 with the long sleeve option, no alterations. #MeMadeMay2023, Days 20 - 27: Day 20: Max 19C, 🌞 but cool. Red #NovaCoat + #IkuntjiArtists #TessutiInesShirt + rtw jeans and wool cashmere jumper. This outfit was a bit warm in the sunshine but otherwise perfect. Very happy to realise I can pop a light jumper under this shirt. Day 21: Max 19C, windy, felt like 12C. I was too cold to think of an interesting me-made outfit so it's just my #PapercutNova coat + rtw wool dress, slip and boots. I tried making a ruboff of this dress last year but it wasn't a success... Day 22: Max 19C, 🌞, not windy! This outfit was gloriously cosy: #TessutiFrankie dress (merino wool, lined) under last year's #V1884 frocktails skirt with the elastic taken in 8cm 😮. Rtw cardigan and shoes.  I don't think I've ever worn a dress under a skirt and I like it! Day 23: Max 20C, 🌞 😀 #V1466 Donna Karan jacket (sadly a bit small) + psychedelic Geometric #SAFlick top, thermal top, rtw jeans.  When I made this top I thought it might be too loud for me but it's not 🤜. Day 24: Max 20C, 🌞 again New #V8825 merino wool dress w thermal top, tights and heels.  I added a rtw coat and changed shoes later - my feet just aren't used to heels these days. Very happy with this dress and would consider making another if I didn't already have a million other patterns waiting to be sewn! Day 25: Max 23C, ☁️, cooler than it sounds. #V1454 top, #SAParker coat, + rtw wool jumper, pants and loafers. Unfortunately these pants aren't suitable for cold weather as they're a tencel blend - my legs were COLD! Love the colours though. Day 26: Max 17C, ☁️, felt like 10C. Layered up in a #TessutiLisa dress, rtw long sleeve blouse, self-drafted thick wool jumper, #SANova coat + stockings and boots.  Felt pretty bulky but warm - I don't normally do this much layering but it works!! Finally got round to taking some picture of my @papercutpatterns #papercutnova I was totally inspired by @suzannemade quilted Nova and this quilted double gauze was just perfect. The fabric was actually from the @guthrieghani #gandgsewingsociety pogonip kit - but I decided that 4 pogonips really was probably 1 too many….. Its the short version with 3/4 length sleeves - I sized down one size from my measurements (definitely could have gone 2) and bias bound the seams with handmade cotton poplin bias binding (this was a labour of love and it say unfinished for ages as I needed to hand sew the facings down and I just couldn’t ‘face’ it!! I’m totally obsessed and it’s perfect for spring! I don’t always have a lot of confidence in my sewing, or the things I make but I wore this out one evening last week and so many people complimented it (one evening asked if it was Oliver Bonas 😳). Made me feel very warm and fuzzy! I love this pattern and the pockets are my fave. I can definitely see me making this again in the future (and don’t tell her by I may have plans for a red one for my daughter to replace her now to small Christmas red faux fur coat!!) #handmade #imadethis #handmadewardrobe #guthrieandghani #papercutpatterns

I’m hoping to make the #papercutnova jacket (shorter version). I’m not sure how to handle the denim but it’s a lined jacket so I feel that it would suit the project. Actually, I’ll be happy if I can get as far as preparing the fabric by the end of the month. Finally getting round to sharing photos of my new @papercutpatterns Nova coat that I made at a recent @guthrieghani_studio retreat using a kit I had previously purchased from @fabricgodmother I love the combination of the green outer and the Joni print lining - very well chosen by FG! The pattern was really straightforward to follow and was genuinely a really enjoyable make! I don’t know why I had put it off for so long- possibly just the size of the pattern pieces and making space to cut them out at home?! I made a size 7/8 longer length exactly as printed, apart from lengthening the sleeves by 2” (thanks to expert advice from @oldfashionedway ☺️) and I’m so pleased that I did. They are just the right length for me now. Southern Hemisphere Sewists grew up with bright wool blankets on their beds for Winter. These unique blankets were dumped and replaced by doonas. Now they are back at markets & are now kids jackets or the odd dress for grownups. Maria @velosews of @seworganisedstyle invited me to deep dive into the history of retro blankets. On the podcast I discussed: planning, minimal waste, tricky bits like wool thicknesses & blanket stretch, & little projects for the scraps like hats, cushions, mitts, dog coats & hot water bottle covers. First: the Ayora Jacket by Pauline Alice with a check blanket. Biggest challenge... buttonholes!!! My machine really chewed them up, going over the buttonholes by hand it was a bit better, but it did occur to me why so many Sewist use toggles. Next: Kaya dress by Fibremood. Extra length to the design weighted the wool and minimalised areas of pre-existing stretch. Blanket binding stitches were used on the top of the pockets, reducing bulk and giving a nod to the history of the original wool. And stripes were matched horizontally because vertical stripe matching just wasted too much fabric. Latest: the Emmi Jacket includes what I’ve learnt so far. Surprisingly buttonholes were handsewn & were quicker than all the unpicking involved with my Ayora. If holes were encountered a callout to our one of many mending experts in the @sewover50 community would have happened. @suestoney at the top of my list. Continuing my journey into coat making - this @papercutpatterns Nova coat has been cut out for over a year before I finally took the plunge and sewed it up. Not really sure what I was worried about because this was actually a really straightforward sew! Bagging out the lining was a bit of a headscratcher but it was a case of trusting the process as it does totally work. I love the cocoon shape but didn't want the coat to drown me so I made a size 1 blended to a 2 at the hip. The fabric is a lambswool blend I bought in a closing down sale so it was an absolute steal. The lining is a @libertyfabrics cotton lawn that I've had in my stash forever and didn't know what to do with. Upcycled Denim Nova Jacket This jacket is based on an idea I had and couldn't let go. I just had to make it even though I was questioning the idea and every decision all the way through the process. It also made me go outside my #makenine but I have no regrets! 😁 I think it turned out pretty cool, but I'm still not sure if it's "me" or not. Time will tell. Either way I had a lot of fun making it and I'm proud that I dared to test my idea! I've had my eye on the Nova coat a couple of years, love the beautiful lines! welcoming this cool crisp air w the coziest wool coat of my dreams ☁️ c/o @fabricandflow for the gorgeous wool** 🌬️ i played around w colorblocking these 2 lovely wools & really wanted to add a pop of contrast so i added a @ritdye scarlet red dyed inset circle right on the back ❣️ i heard soft grumbles about this pattern when i first noticed it last year, and i hit some speedbumps of my own while constructing it 🙃 i opted to size down based on notes i read from the pattern hashtag & also raised the armscyes up by 1.5” as well as narrowed the sleeves by the same amount to accommodate this change. this is sz 1, short coat version of the @papercutpatterns #novacoat ✨ i loved that there was a projector file provided 🫶🏽 but i really did not enjoy the instructions esp once i got to the lining ~ imo they fell short, and when i resorted to finding helpful youtube sewalongs, i discovered that the construction & pattern had been totally revised from the original version so the videos only confused me more than helped 😂🫠 **fabric gifted in exchange for photos 💗 #memade #sewistsofinstagram #papercutnova #nova #woolcoat #inset #fabricandflow [Image ID in alt text]

For this year’s #makenine challenge I want to challenge myself and improve my sewing skills. So I’ve chosen patterns that I think will be a bit trickier but I plan to take more time over them rather than sewing ‘fast fashion’. I’m also planning to use my stash wherever possible and, if I do buy more fabric, I will do this with a plan in mind rather than because I like it. 🧵 If you have made any of these, please let me know how you got on! 🧵 The patterns I have chosen are: 1. Mitchell trousers by @closetcorepatterns. I have seen loads of wide leg trousers around lately and I really want some of my own. 2. New Look 6545. I really want to make this jacket in a colourful printed fabric, maybe a satin. 3. Pleiades 2 dress by @french_poetry_ . I haven’t tried any of their patterns but they have some beautiful dresses with lovely details. 4. Evans blazer by @heyjunehandmade. I have had this pattern for years but never been brave enough to give it a go. 5. Belladone dress by @deer_and_doe_patterns. This pattern has been around for ages and I love it but it scares me a bit because it’s so fitted! 6. Simplicity 9614. I promised my husband I would make him a rugby shirt a long time ago and I bought this pattern but didn’t get round to it. 7. Sophie swimsuit by @closetcorepatterns. I’ve never tried to make swimwear yet so this will be a challenge but I love the vintage style of this bikini and it would be great to have a custom fit. 8. Nova coat by @papercutpatterns. I’ve seen so many of these now and I’m jealous so need my own! 9. Cavalcade travel bag by @sewsweetness. I was assured by a dear friend that I didn’t look snobby in this first image. But if you think I do please assume I am smiling at you in my heart. 😆 Finally getting to posting the @papercutpatterns #novacoat that I made this fall from second-hand wool supplied to me by a thoughtful friend! I thought it was black at first but it’s a dark green and such a really thick and rich colour. I lined the jacket with the same wool, but ran out so used a bit of plaid wool I had in my stash. I sized waaay down because I feel like my head drowns when I wear oversized garments… but I prob sized down too far because it could stand to overlap more in the front when I close it. (I measured for a size 4 and cut a size 1). Super cool, interesting pattern. Them pockets just really take the cake for me. And I love the shape of the collar and how it sits. Weeeeeell... I wouldn't be me and we wouldn't be us, if I only made one Nova coat! . With the leftovers from my coat (and the extra's from Yasmina) and a bit of extra rib, I managed to make a 2nd coat for my daughter with the Papercute kids Nova version by @papercutpatterns . So now we can twin with nearly the same jackets. Mine is finished with a neon yellow biais on the inside, hers got a pink'ish biais binding. . Last year, at @ansje.stoffen.naailessen sewingweekend, @lydia.the was working on a short Nova coat in this fabric. I fell in love with it straight away! ❤️ So much so, that I ordered this fabric the same weekend. . Somehow it took me months to get started. It took me some puzzling to get the print to match and I also had to call on a friend for some back up material because I was running a bit short. I knew @yasjes ordered it as well, cuz we both had that instant crush 😅 She saved me big time and send me a leftover piece of her own Nova coat ❤️ . Splashed out in the Minerva sale on some Mind the Maker jacquard last year but only finished this off in January. This cocoon coat was made using gorgeous factory waste tweed and lined using inexpensive flannel for warmth. The Tweed sample was a generous 3 1/2 meters long and created to sample 5 different colourways. Tricky to line up the colourway ‘stripes’, but I think it works. What are your thoughts? The Nova Coat! Headed out tonight to the @sewconfident Colour Workshop and finally took some photos of this jacket before heading out! I changed the back panel to allow the colour block to only go across the bottom.
