We have taken a hard turn right into autumn weather in my corner of the world. I gathered all my sandals up to store them away until warm and dry weather returns, I’m getting reacquainted with socks, and I turned the heat on in my office for the first time in many months.
Luckily I finished this dress just in time to wear it on one of our last hot days about a week ago. I’ve been thinking about making this for over a year - noodling over pattern and fabric options. In the end it was a pretty simple sew, but the process was a doozy.
I started out with the Papercut Patterns #CelestiaCurveDress because I loved the proportions of the tiered skirt and the simple bodice with a deep back scoop neck and bust darts. Welp, 🚨🚨🚨 despite following the hashtag for the pattern for a long time and noting frequent mentions of makers needing to make substantial adjustments to get the bodice to fit and be wearable…I thought it would be different for me. Reader, it was not different. I made 4 muslins of the bodice and finally decided to scrap it and go back to the drawing board. The bra coverage was non-existent, the straps were set SO wide as to constantly slip down (and I am a relatively broad-shouldered person). I’ve been burned in the past by the drafting of this particular brand’s patterns and in hindsight I should have listened to my intuition. OH WELL. To err is human and so forth.
I shifted gears and used another pattern and the first bodice muslin I made was perfect as-is. Details about that pattern below!
Project details:
🌺 The bodice is the @caramiyamaui #YesterdayDress, view B, size 18 with an added lining since I was a bit nervous about the opacity of this fabric. Skirt panels are from the celestia since I’d already cut out the pattern pieces, no lining in the skirt because I figured the volume of fabric there would yield enough coverage and opacity. Made in a cotton poplin from @blackbirdfabrics called “mod floral” in the color way “periwinkle/red/green”.
🌺 Worn with a secondhand Birkenstocks and secondhand Karen Walker sunnies
