Aalto Dress ✨ My new summer go to! ☀️ I was very lucky to win one of @wearethefabricstore Insta competitions which included a @papercutpatterns pattern and fabric voucher. And this is the product of that! I went with the square neckline and low back with bow 🎀 And shortened it, inspired by @sew.zoh. It’s the perfect summer dress that can be dressed up (throw on a blazer and a heel) or down (tossed over a bikini and flats) depending on the mood ✨ I really love working with Papercut patterns as they have great instructions and the construction always goes that bit further to ensure a professional finish. A black and white themed party called for a black and white dress! I loved @papercutpatterns #aaltodress when I first saw it. I was a little intimidated when I first opened the pattern as there were so many pieces but once I broke it down it really is straightforward with clear instructions. I was good 😊. I made a wearable toile first because the twist front looked tricky. I made it trickier because I didn’t want it to fall as low as the pattern at the sides. I don’t like to expose too much aging flesh - particularly at a 21st birthday party! 😂 So I shortened the straps quite a bit and graded from size 4 at the bust to size 6 at the waist and hips. Despite nailing it with the toile - it took me ages to fiddle around to get the fit right on this version. Schoolgirl error - I’d made the toile in a completely different fabric with a slight stretch - doh! Lots of basting and trying on to get there. It did drive me bonkers making sure I kept the twist right! Of course, in bringing the front up as much as I did I should have lengthened the front facing as it now finishes in an odd place. I love this pattern and I love this dress - it’s perfect for hot summer evenings - while we have them! The bodice and neck variations are fab! The fabric is a gorgeous cupro viscose from @stitch_fabric1 which drapes just as beautifully as they said it would. Another holiday make and one of my #makenine2024 makes is the @papercutpatterns Aalto top. I eventually made the top version out of a blue tencel viscose that I’ve had in my stash for years. I never complete my make nine but I still enjoy putting one together! This is my make nine for 2024. I have no idea how successful I’ll be especially as I only own 4 of the patterns at the moment! I hope to make this very soon! 🪡 Swimwear - this has been on my make nine for the past few years and I still haven’t made any. However, this year we have a summer holiday booked in Greece which I’m so excited for! I have some fabric and am thinking the @megannielsenpatterns cottesloe pattern but I might change this! 🤞🏻 I finally make swimwear this year! 🪡 @atelierjupe este shirt - I love the look of this pattern and have lots of suitable fabrics. Papercut Aalto top I made this before Christmas for a party but it is probably going to the scrap pile instead. I love the look of this pattern, but would go up a size or lengthen the straps next time as this sits too high and firm for me. The cheap poly crepe is a bit like cardboard when interfaced for the twist which makes it uncomfortable. And the print placement in the centre front is definitely not my best work. This fabric was one of those immediate “add to cart” fabrics. I saw it, and had to have it. It’s a deadstock viscose lawn from @fabricgodmother. She recommended the Papercut Patterns Aalto dress for it which I agreed was the perfect pattern match! I have never sewn a @papercutpatterns pattern before, but this was a wonderful pattern to sew up. The instructions were fantastic and easy to follow, and this dress came together faster and easier than I expected. I chose the low back with the tie option just to add a little fun and flowy-ness. The dress is finished with hem facings, which I have never done before but I really like! They add weight and structure to the hem and I really like the way they help the dress to drape at the bottom. I made zero mods and am very happy with the fit as well! I am also using this dress as an entry for #sunsoutsundresseson. The fabric feels absolutely amazing, it’s soft, silky and cool to the touch.
