New makes! Im out wearing an #elizatrenchcoat and #nikkodress. It was nice to work on them as a form of escape from my regular work, which really buried me the past few months. Unfortunately, neither one turned out as well as I’d hoped—I’ll explain. Coat woes… The dye: The trench coat fabric dye was not set well. The whole time sewing, my fingers turned blue. I could have sworn I pre washed it, and even after I washed it again, the dye kept rubbing onto my fingers. Next time, I’ll try adding some salt to the wash, which apparently helps, though the fabric has already faded in parts. I purchased it as deadstock, and I guess that’s why a brand couldn’t use it. Other issues: didn’t sew the welts correctly 🙄 the lining I chose seems a bit too heavy as a fabric compared to the shell, so it tugs at the bottom. 🫤 the top button hole gave me lots of troubles. Yet, I still love it and I’m already wearing it out! It was also my first complete project on my recently acquired vintage Pfaff 362, which works like magic, so it will likely remain a nostalgic make for me. The dress: the edges are wavy—a common issue with ribbed knit. I read about how to troubleshoot this, and went ahead without taking precautions or following the stabilizing strategies, other than lowering the tension. My bad. As with the coat: this won’t stop me from wearing it It’s super cozy, and I love the green color. Its a welcome addition to my wardrobe. ✨Eliza Trench Coat✨ When planning my packing (and makes) for my trip to Ireland, I knew I would need some sort of layer to go with the dress I made for the wedding we were traveling for… but I had no idea what layer to take with me. And then I opened Pinterest and a trench coat was on my feed and it was instant inspiration. I quickly put together a vision board (last slide), ordered the fabric, and waited for all the pieces to arrive. In the weekend before we left, I made my way through the sewing process. There were multiple occasions where I almost gave up. There were a few points where I really struggled with the directions and I also was disheartened by my less than stellar welt pockets… but you know what, I made the damn thing and I love it. I’m sad I won’t get to wear it again for a few months, but it’s going to be a staple once it’s weather appropriate! My second #elizatrench by @papercutpatterns in wool deadstock @wearethefabricstore lined in a silky viscose. I cut this out at the start of my holidays but have only now found energy to sew. Hoping it will still be well used in the second half of the term. I sized down to a 3 for this version but think I needed to not shorten the sleeves as they are a little on the short side. Made the short length version with the standard collar and welt pockets. It is so cozy. Absolutely love how it feels to wear, quite a light wool…a wee bit of itch so I’m glad it’s well lined. Love that this pattern has wide sleeves as it can be thrown on over everything. No other notes. #memademay2025 day 29! It’s that time of year where you can’t fully wear a summer outfit because it might rain and the wind might blow you over to oz. So today I wore my #closetcoretee by @closetcorepatterns (view A, size 30 but my bust measurement of 53” would put me in size 26) with my longer #thompsoncoat by Daughter Judy - I never made a post dedicated to this coat so here goes: I made the 2x size in the JJ range which is a size down from the suggested size based on my bust measurements. I am 5’7 and I shortened it but I can’t remember by how much 😬 I’d made the pattern before in denim so I’d assumed that this one would be a breeze. Nope! This material was tricky to work with and every mistake that needed to be seam ripped is now a mark on the fabric. I was embarrassed at how confusing I found the instructions for the lining - I thought it was just me being a beginner and that I shouldn’t have taken on this project etc. So I had bit of a meltdown (hence the label) but I’m glad I wasn’t the only one? @hemmin_n_hawin . I still haven’t attached the lining around the sleeves properly but it’ll get done someday 💀 I do love the raglan details and all the top stitching on the Thompson coat but I’m looking to try out another pattern for a summer trench - #elizatrench @papercutpatterns 👀 #memademay #memade #sewing #thompsoncoatplus #curvysewing

Eliza trench is FINALLY done! This has been such a lovely slow and involved project and I'm super happy with it! Thanks to @fabricgodmother for making this the #fgdreamwardrobe, I'd never have been confident enough to try this myself but having received the pattern and fabric it was the push I needed! The pattern was a delight to work with, probably the best instructions I've seen from #papercutpatterns #elizatrench . The fabric is stunning, deadstock gabardine from FG and lining is a Rose & Hubble cotton I picked up a the Creative Craft show last month. Now this is done I feel I can start spring summer sewing!

🌺 The coat. The details. 🌺 When floral quilted fabric isn't quite enough, we add ricrac 😆 I wanted to avoid this looking like a dressing gown, so I made sure to choose a trench coat pattern with the right style lines (might share more about that, the decision making process was lengthy!), and added trims to create some extra definition... 🌸 I put tiny ricrac around the cuff tabs. A making-it-up-as-I-go decision which I'm really glad I did! 💐 I went for welt pockets, the pattern gives the option of patch pockets but they felt a bit too dressing gown with this fabric. I added medium sized ricrac along the pocket edge for some definition. 🌺 For the collar I went for the larger size (there are two included in the pattern) and inserted large ricrac within the seams. I bloody love finishing a collar this way. 🌸 The big ol' ricrac was used again along the storm flap so it didn't get lost in the busy print. Joining #memademay a little late with one of my most ambitious makes yet! 😅 A couple of years ago, I totally fell for Skall’s trench with a corduroy tartan collar — way before Barbour was cool — and ever since, this jacket idea has been in my head. Last year, I finally made it happen: my loved one gifted me the dreamiest silk (which I quilted by hand for the lining with raw cotton), and I found the coziest merino tartan + cotton twill combo, all at my local fabric dealer @mahler.stoffe . It took ages to find the right pattern — I was on a very specific raglan-sleeve mission — and I ended up with the #elizatrench and tweaked the sleeves to be straight instead of tapered. I sewed it a bit oversized for max pullover layering.  This is the @papercutpatterns Eliza Trench. I made it last year but only wore it a few times before the Auckland weather warmed up - so this winter is really its time to shine.
 It was a big project, but honestly, I loved making it and felt so accomplished when it was done! The details are beautiful, and it was actually easier to make than I expected. I’d definitely recommend giving it a go.

I made a trench coat! I finished this a week ago and then needed to take the deepest breath having finished it! It was a slow, methodical sew which took so much more concentration and care than I had energy for 😅 the joys of sewing when very pregnant!!! But I am SO pleased with the finished result. Whilst we have all this sunny weather I’m not sure when it will have its first outing, but I’m sure there will be some lovely April showers to test this out in. Pattern is @papercutpatterns Eliza trench. I am such a fan of papercut patterns and always love how focused and clear the instructions are. This is definitely a project that takes time and care so I’m glad I took a little and often approach with it. The main fabric is from @fabricgodmother and was part of the February dream wardrobe. It’s such a beautiful gabardine and sewed up beautifully. I wanted something really pretty and floral for the lining so used this gorgeous cotton lawn from @fabricsgalorelondon which I have had in my stash for a couple of years now. It had been destined for a summer dress, but it worked too well for this project for me not to use it. Soooo, I finished this barn jacket just as summer started and was a little worried I’d have to wait until autumn to wear it, because it turned out so good! 😻 But the heatwave passed, it’s been raining a lot lately, and guess what? It already had its rainy-day debut and… WOW. It’s super cozy, super cool, and I really hope the barn jacket hype isn’t over yet, because I just finished mine 🥰. This is my second #elizatrench jacket by @papercutpatterns and honestly, I love every single one of their patterns. They’re always so well explained, the instructions super clear and detailed, and the fit? Always on point. I barely ever have to do any mods, and if I do, it’s usually just a little hack here and there (like slightly closing the neckline or adding a zipper). The fabric is a total gem I found at my forever favorite @mahler.stoffe : a Ralph Lauren overproduction rest piece cotton-linen twill. I quilted the lining myself using silk and soy Vlieseline, and I’ve been wearing it non-stop these days 🤩. 🤎 Eliza trench coat 🤎 This was, by far, my most ambitious sewing project to date, and I still can't quite believe that it all came together! I was absolutely thrilled when I opened my #fgdreamwardrobe box and saw this fabric and pattern. I would never have dreamed of attempting something like this, so I was more than up for the challenge! The most complicated part of the pattern was the welt pockets, which was right at the start of the pattern. This step was a real head scratcher and particularly frustrating. The finished result was not quite right, but fortunately, I don't think it is too obvious to anyone else but me. The rest of the process was pleasantly straightforward, and it was very satisfying to see the coat start to take shape. It was particularly thrilling to pull the whole thing through a small gap in the lining to reveal an almost complete coat! The pattern by @papercutpatterns was very detailed and easy to follow. I found some of the diagrams a little confusing (though I think that is more to do with my inexperience than to do with the pattern). Make a shorter version! 👇 Simply stunning make by Suzanne at @suzannemade who used up some left over material from her original trench coat project to make a shorter version of the @papercutpatterns #ElizaTrench 🧥 She lined this with one of our ex-designer viscose/silk blend materials. This semi-sheer Italian dressmaking fabric has come to us from a much loved clothing brand and features a fine blue and white overcheck. It handles like silk and is the perfect choice for men’s shirts, spring summer fashion, children’s garments and as shown beautifully here, as a lining to a Suzanne's short trench. Two for the price of one-ish! When I realised I had what looked like enough to make a short @papercutpatterns #ElizaTrench left from my original, I laid out the pieces and dun dun dunnnnn, didn’t really. Then like two weeks later Sézane released the short version of their popular Clyde trench, Bobby, and I had a lightbulb moment to just shorten the short pattern and make it fit 💡 Since my first is both too big and too long for these legs, I went down a size and shortened the body by 10cm, moving the welt pockets up and adjusting the bags too, which happened later when I realised they would be annoyingly too long. This time making it was a breeze, I enjoyed sewing the first one but since I’d essentially done it before I didn’t agonise over anything and it came together pretty quickly - even the welt pockets! I would have added side straps and perhaps even the storm flap if I had enough but I was really working with the bare minimum, I even cut one of the collar stand pieces in two parts and added a seam allowance. Desperate times. I also went with slightly different buttons and used a viscose silk lining this time because the cotton gingham in the long version is a bit too sticky. It's been a long time since I posted content to my grid thr photo upload has had an upgrade! My sewjo for garments went missing for a while so picked this to ease myself back in 😆 This is the #elizatrench by @papercutpatterns and I received the pattern and fabric in the February #fgdreamwardrobe 🤩🤩 I made the size 4 and didn't make any alterations to the pattern pieces. The cutting layouts show the pieces on the single layer but i prefer to cut on the fold as this ensures I don't cut 2 of the same piece, and it's quicker as there are quite a few pieces. I used tailors chalk throughout the make to mark the welt pockets, buttonholes, button placement and to keep to 1cm seam allowance on the points when making the collar, cuffs and belt. Got to admit it did scare me to cut into the fabric for the 1st welt pocket but I made sure I'd followed the measurements and re-read the instructions before cutting, it was fiddly and seemed complicated but it just needs confidence and patience the 2nd pocket was so much quicker to do. I used a Lady McElroy cotton for my lining which I think matches perfectly 👌 I added some gorgeous @pigeonwishes.shops buttons on the cuffs but realised afterwards that I'd be 1 short for the front 😳 as I'm doing #lastsewiststanding2025 I couldn't buy more, so I found 5 other buttons (my middle daughter gave me a lovely box of wooden buttons for Christmas) from my stash. Had a slight mare with the buttonholes 😭 the top one got jammed & was wonky, needed to unpick ergh, managed to go over most of the original but made sure to I add some stabiliser underneath to help the fabric glide, it worked perfectly but I now have white paper on the backs which I can't remove. But the the remaining buttonholes were 👌 Beware when using a new unpicker to open your buttonholes as I cut the thread on 3 so needed to stitch over the tops 🤪 Absolutely love this coat & my sewjo that was missing has fully returned thanks @fabricgodmother 🤩🤩🤩 #fgdreamwardrobe #buttons #buttonholes #trenchcoat #elizatrench #sewjo #sewingover50 #sewingover50 #sewistsofinstagram #sewingcommunity #lastsewiststanding2025 #usingupstash #coat

This was a real Labour of love - my first time sewing with something thicker than denim and boy did I find it a challenge (shout out to @izzosewstudio for helping me fix a few wonky bits !) This is another @papercutpatterns #elizatrench . Fabric was a wool blend which along with lining and the buttons from Annie’s abbeydale (total materials cost £82) - lost track of the time spent making this due to some of the self-inflicted frustrations I had making it but total costs would be well over £100. Day 12 and the last day of my #12FavMakes2024 is my absolute favourite make of the year, the #elizatrench from @papercutpatterns made in wool gabardine from @wearethefabricstore. I love everything about this coat. Whenever I wear it I feel so put together. There's plenty of room to wear layers underneath but the coat doesn't feel oversized. I chose the deep pointed collar and I love it. The fabric drapes beautifully and the colour brightens up any day. I've made a jacket version too because I love the pattern so much.
