Want to see a mid-Summer update on my #makenine2021 plans? I like to sketch my planned projects and then paint the sketches when each project is completed. As you can see, I’ve finished 4/9 so far! I’m not terribly behind yet, but I need to get sewing!! To be very honest, I don’t know if all of these plans will get completed this year. When I made the list, my wedding plans looked quite different and didn’t involve any additional sewing on my part. Now, I’ve taken on at least one big wedding sewing project (and maybe two if I don’t fit in my wedding dress again by November…). But I think that’s the beauty of sketching out sewing plans in this way. These are good ideas, and I still want to pursue all of them. This dress! Eeep, I love it so much! I’ve actually taken it out to lunch twice this week! 😂 Heavily influenced by @her.two.hands gorgeous denim version, this is my hack of the #patinablouse and #hughesdress . Two gorgeous patterns hacked together into a dress that feels very me! The fabric is a lovely indigo cotton twill with great structure and fabulous depth of colour. I moved the darts into the waist of the bodice and converted them into quite dramatic gathers into the skirt, and gathered the centre back of the bodice at the waist too. I also added belt loops and a buckled waist tie. I worked pretty hard to make this dress lovely inside and out, which is not my forté, but I really wanted to take this make slow and steady and try to be a bit of a perfectionist. I think I did quite a good job in the end! Both the #hughesdress and #patinablouse by @fridaypatterncompany are brilliant patterns with super clear instructions and clever construction details. The fabric is from @blackbirdfabrics and such gorgeous quality. It’s been a while since I’ve posted but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy sewing away! Here’s a selection of my latest creations over the last few months: 1. Orange @tillybuttons #Lyra dress looking very autumnal with our dog Rory. Made with some beautiful fabric I found in a charity shop. I’ve already started making myself a red one for Christmas. 2. Red linen #hughesdress by @fridaypatterncompany. This was the second one I’ve made (first was the exciting French food themed white linen earlier in the summer). Loved twirling around in this one so much and it was so practical for holidays and a hot summer. Made from a red linen mix from @justsewpenrith. 3. The stunning @fabricgodmother September Dream Wardrobe @fibremood Avril coat. I’ve worn this so much since I’ve made it and it gets so many compliments. Since this photo I’ve sewed down the button cover so it sits better and am considering adding pockets to make this even more practical. 4. A @merchantandmills dog coat for our cockapoo Rory. Made out of some m&m remnants from some bag projects I made earlier in the year for my husband and stepdad. 5. One of my most worn summer outfits - the #saturdayskirt from Friday Pattern Co. Fabric from Penrith again. 6. This fun @papercutpatterns Estelle two piece top and skirt - the short version of the two piece I made for my cousins wedding in June. Fabric is an incredible Indian block print in cobalt blue from Merchant and Mills again. 7. A very last minute orange twist top from one of the Great British Sewing Bee books. Sewed it the night before we went on holiday hiking in La Palma using a jersey remnant I bought ages ago. 8. Some fun red Merchant and Mills #Pegs. I found these hard work to fit but will try them again next summer - maybe in a black/darker colour too. #memademay2025 day 2 has me in my #hughesdress that was originally supposed to be a toile but turned out so well that I never made another. The fabric is from a tablecloth which is probably cotton and some kind of linen (?) sack (the cream panels) I got for almost nothing at a secondhand shop. The buttons turned out to be the most expensive part of this project! I spent a long time on this dress, as I had to toile the sleeves a lot to fit my shoulders and it was my first time lining and hand-sewing the lining on a bodice. I think it was worth it though. This #MeMadeMay I have pledged (@paigejoannaa) to modify and mend existing Friday projects in my wardrobe. Altering the hem lengths, mending worn areas, and modifying things that don't get the love they deserve.⁠ ⁠ 1. The gingham #SagebrushTop dress hack it well loved and needs mending around the neck ties. The length is also too long for me now and I want to shorten it, and use the excess fabric to create a little belt for the waist.⁠ ⁠ 2. The #HughesDress was a labour of love but I just don't wear it! I think I need to shorten the hem slightly and perhaps add some embroidery details to the pocket and neckline to add a little bit of character.⁠ ⁠ 3. The #Wildergown tends to swoop lower at the front for me because I have a small bust, so I need to modify the hem to raist the front a couple of inches, then I think I will wear it more!⁠ ⁠ Do you have anything in your wardrobe that could do with altering or mending? I made it to pattern but today something just didn't feel me about it so I've changed it to cap sleeves and a shorter slightly slimmer fit. Made in @rainbowfabrickilburn light weight floral viscose. When I saw the #hughesdress from @fridaypatterncompany, I was enamoured by the pattern from the start. The little cap sleeve, tie at the back to cinch in the waist and little pocket details, it’s all just so gorgeous 💕 I’ve used a beautiful floral linen print from @spotlightstores, lined with a simple white and lightweight cotton. I will definitely be making more of these, perhaps even a shorter, knee length version, but I’ll go a size up or two next time. I definitely mis-judged the sizing this time around, discovering too late that I’d cut out too small a size! Luckily I managed to rectify things by adding a button placket to the front (swipe to see). It’s a bit janky and a wee bit tight at the bust and across the back, but I’m very glad I could save this one. The #hughesdress by @fridaypatterncompany! A few weeks ago I finally had an opportunity to make something for myself that wasn’t my own design, and it felt so good to get out of my own world and back into the indie sewing pattern world. This dress has been on my bucket list for years, but I just couldn’t figure out what fabric to use. Finally I decided that I like the actual Friday sample most, on the cover of the pattern booklet, and so I used some fabulous red linen from my stash and whipped this baby up. The best part? I got it done in ONE DAY! Well, with a tiny bit of help from @allisonlaing, sewing the buttons on literally 5 minutes before we had to leave for dinner 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 I made a size large with only a couple alterations to the pattern. I took in the sides about 1/2” total, scooped out 1” from the neckline to show a bit more skin, and reduced the poof of the sleeve. And that’s it! I was expecting a much fussier pattern since it’s so fitted, but it worked really well for my shape. I lined it using a beautiful white block print from @blackbirdfabrics and some lovely vintage buttons with a floral design. Hello to my new Hughes Dress! 🍂 First make of 2025 and I’m pretty darn pleased with her. This is the @fridaypatterncompany Hughes Dress in denim from @merchantandmills. I love the classic shape of the Hughes Dress and know I’m going to get a lot of wear out of her! I typically fall between sizes with FPC patterns and opted for the smaller… she’s perfect on the bust but possibly wants a little more room on the waist and hips. But then I’m not hating the more fitted look it results in! I think for a more breezy, lighter fabric I would definitely choose the bigger size. Also giving my new @tillybuttons Nora sweater a place on the grid. This was my twixmas make and she’s so super comfy. BEHOLD THE HUGHES DRESS!!! I got the pattern for Christmas this year and finally made it!!! My work was doing a 90s themed night and I thought the #HughesDress had a very 90s style and fairly last minute made it!!! With some adjustments. Despite following the measurements the bodice ended up very tight. Generally this dress is supposed to button all the way down but after trying on the bodice I knew that was going to happen. I decided to stitch it down the front and very literally squeezed into it. And it felt comfy to wear, but the top half of me is squeezed into that dress. Maybe I'll try one of the plus size bodice pieces to see if that helps!!! I also added an elastic at the bottom of the bodice. It didn't help all that much, but I've never added an elastic into anything before so I'm glad I tried it!!! I bought this fabric right at the beginning of the pandemic and I'm so happy to have finally made it into something!!! Happy August!  Time for back-to-school prepping, unbearable heat, and weekends spent making matching dog clothing.  Maybe that last part is just me 😊.   I’ve been looking for a reason to make the Hughes Dress by @fridaypatterncompany for a while, and I got my reason when I received this lovely soft-washed 100% linen from @minervadotcom.  It’s a perfect fabric for all seasons and is ideal for Hughes' romantic design.  I was even able to make a matching Butano head scarf for me and a dress for Habibi from the scrap fabric. Leg room to spare! I've been saving this embroidered fabric from Jodhpur, India for years and so happy with how this turned out. I haven’t posted in years, but I’ve been sewing offscreen! Here’s my latest make, a heavily hacked #hughesdress from @fridaypatterncompany I made for my engagement photos! Details: 👚I sewed just the bodice pieces (and used the skirt pieces as a guide to extend the bodice) 🪡 Made full-length bishop sleeves by extending the underarm seam perpendicular to the sleeve cap. Then I drafted a half-inch cuff to finish the gathered end of the sleeve 👗 I made the scoop neck a bit wider and more square (eyeballed it with my handy dandy French curve) 🧵 Skipped the ties in the back Lining fabric is cotton from @gather_here Shell fabric was thrifted from @make.and.mend Photos by @yimotion_photography (which we are so happy with!!!)

I saw @littledaisypatch rendition of the #marchdress and knew I needed both lace and laces up the back. I full on copied the back from my favorite #hughesdress and viola! One end of the fall season dress. I didn’t suppose I’d like the long differently poofy sleeves, but I actually do on this. I don’t know that I’d do it with a drapey fabric, though. FLOWERS 🌻 My #makenine2021 Hughes Dress is ready. Originally, as you can see in my #makeninechallenge list, it was supposed to be a rusty red linen dress, but ultimately has the green color with the flowers 💐 While searching for a specific color of linen fabric at the @maries_kit_fabrics this new fabric had been just delivered. This was posted n Instagram so that is how I have see it 👩‍💻 I ordered the fabric immediately, washed it and sewed it🧵 Well, at least I kept the type of the fabric as planned😉 Since I have some flowery fabric left, I will also make a blouse out of it. Hughes Dress by @fridaypatterncompany Another summer stash buster! I used 3m of vintage cotton I had in my stash to make this dress and it was *just* enough - there’s a lot more lining involved than I thought! I also used some vintage buttons from my box that matched perfectly 🙌🏻 I made a size small (no mods) and am happy with the fit, though I think if I make this again I’ll use a lighter, more flowy fabric as cotton for a full length dress is a little too heavy for me personally - but you live and learn! The Hughes Dress 👗 🌺 Remember one of my story where I asked you for help with my #hughesdress ? It was to be chosen between nutmeg buttons, but smaller or the ocker bigger ones, with the first being the winner. However, I was not entirely happy with this solution. There was a third option, that could have helped me, with additional advice on where to get something even more suitable for the beautiful fabric. Unfortunately, there weren’t many comments other than a few funny jokes from my friends which was pretty cool. At the end, I ordered the golden crozo buttons from @merchantandmills . That is why I finished the dress quite late but it was worth to wait! It was very enjoyable project, even though it required a lot of hand stitching 🧵 The adjustable lace-up tie in the back is the high light of the design . I love it! A #hughesdress for Cirque last night. Gosh - I love this pattern. It’s so damn flattering for me (if I do say so myself). The little corset back pulls in to give you that waist line all hourglasses need. @fridaypatterncompany - you get my shape! My favourite thing about sewing is being able to compliment my body. I sometimes get swept in with patterns I see that are awesome and on trend but I know will look shocking on me (hello anything that looks like a sack or is oversized 👋). I completely agree that you should do whatever you want for your style, but for me, my style is what I KNOW looks good on me. It took a while (my teens were filled with both boyfriend and hipster skinny jeans - which now I know are both terrible for me). We live and learn. But I honestly believe we look best when we compliment our shapes. So I’ll be over here defining my waist and being (sometimes) jealous of anyone that can pull off a sacky dress. Because, although I know I could just “go for it and damn others opinions” it’s my opinion that matters and I’ll feel like a lump. Shout out to all the hourglasses our there - jump on this pattern if you also require constant waist definition in your life. And a mention goes to @katiemakesadress. When @pitttrading popped this remnant into their stories that someone (I’m looking at you @natasha_sews) had bought it, I was miserable. It’s my kind of black. I don’t do black often but when I do you’ll bet it’s offset by multiple coloured flowers. So I whinged about my loss in my stores and Katie messaged me with a link that they had a second remnant I just hadn’t seen. Sewing friends are just the absolute best! Buttons from @spotlightstores. FLOWERS 🌺 Since it worked so well with #hughesdress , I wanted to check out another pattern from @fridaypatterncompany . After seeing the beautiful #davenportdress as a top at the @nillysews profile, I decided to choose this pattern and make it too. Thanks to useful comment from Paula, I made a size M and extended the sleeves by 5 cm. The sewing instructions are really good, but I still struggled with the front and back yoke pieces and I needed to use a sew along video. The fabric I bought in May from @bemax_fabrics . I *finally* finished my @fridaypatterncompany Hughes Dress! 🙌 Fabric is super cute viscose from @felicity.fabrics adorned in teeny hearts 💛 This was originally supposed to be my #sewyellowforendo back in March but here we are in September... can I play the better late than never card?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn't make any alterations to the pattern and it came out pretty perfectly. This time of year is my favourite. The leaves are starting to change, but it's still warm enough for fall transition clothes like this! This is the Hughes Dress by Friday Pattern Company. I made the XL with an additional FBA, but didn't need any other changes to the pattern. (Although I will definitely hem it shorter next time) This is my 4th Friday Pattern Company make this summer/fall. I am clearly a fan! How about a @fridaypatterncompany Hughes dress pinafore? I made a mockup of the top, cut away part of the armhole and the neckline, picked apart the mockup and then transferred it to the pattern. Then I made this in black cotton corduroy from @selfmade_com . It’s been ages since I’ve sewn anything for myself (going back to work and sewing for other people every day will do that!) but I finally took some time last weekend to work on a new dress. This is the @fridaypatterncompany #hughesdress, which I bought the pattern for sometime in the past year or so when they had a sale. I’d been eyeing it for a while since it seemed like a great basic summer dress with some cute details like the lacing on the back. Now that the weather’s getting warmer, it seemed like a good time to try it out. Used this fabric I’ve had in my stash for years for a mock-up — I love it but obviously it’s way brighter than what I usually wear. Could be good in summer though? There are some minor alterations I need to make to the pattern in the future but this one should definitely be wearable when I finish it, as long as the truly awful fusible I pulled out of my stash (that is already bubbling) holds up…

FLOWERS 🌻 My #makenine2021 Hughes Dress is ready. Originally, as you can see in my #makeninechallenge list, it was supposed to be a rusty red linen dress, but ultimately has the green color with the flowers 💐 While searching for a specific color of linen fabric at the @maries_kit_fabrics this new fabric had been just delivered. This was posted n Instagram so that is how I have see it 👩‍💻 I ordered the fabric immediately, washed it and sewed it🧵 Well, at least I kept the type of the fabric as planned😉 Since I have some flowery fabric left, I will also make a blouse out of it.
