A fabulous Good Friday here in the sun .. all week the weather has been fabulous … unseasonably warm and consistently sunny. This is unheard of this far south and this late in April … we thought the last of the warm weather had left us just a week ago when it turned cold enough to wear a quilted coat! This week has been teeshirts! We walked along the beach from our resort into cowes to see the wonderful local art exhibition and enjoy some sushi for lunch … we wandered back along the beach and had a rest for an hour or so before heading to the beach to dip our toes in the water (still cold as this is not Queensland .. strong waves today). This is actually the first time I wore specially made beach swimming outfit to an actual beach… this a combination of #seabrightswimmer #fridaypatterncompany @fridaypatterncompany and #freerangeslacks shortened @sewhouse7 in a polyester #africanwax … for anybody like me that needs a #sunsmart swimsuit that is easy to sew and wear I highly recommend this pattern … my philosophy is that I am happy to use sunscreen where I can easily reach … so this plunging neckline really works. This is the latest iteration of the Watermelon Swimsuit, and I think this one is pretty wearable!!! Take 1 was VERY low in front, and the D-rings recommended in the pattern instructions just didn't give me the look I was wanting out of it. Also, for some reason I realized that the crotch was VERY wide and I was getting gathers in front that were not at all appropriate or flattering. When the suit got wet, the large bottom problem just got droopy and horrible. I unpicked the gathers on the bottom part of the bust and overlapped the pieces, which seemed to fix the top - still low cut, but just busty enough. After doing some research on swimsuits I already own, I realized that the crotch problem was a result of me not reading the instructions carefully. 😅 I turned the elastic over a second time and have a MUCH better fit all around. The butt still feels like it might be a little big, but I am going to test drive it today and make decisions after I get it wet. It's definitely passable dry. But all in all, I am very pleased with myself! The Seabright swimmer by @fridaypatterncompany 🏊‍♀️ One of my sewing resolutions at the start of the year was to give swimwear a go, I had this pattern a while before a had the confidence to give it a try. I don’t know why I was so nervous?! It was so much easier than I thought! The instructions are so fantastic and easy to follow, and I just LOVE the result!! I made a size large which fit perfectly and I closed up the front opening slightly more than the instructions suggest just for a bit more coverage. Sunflower fabric is from @stitchandinkfabrics and the bright blue fabric is from @poundfabrics I can’t decide which version I like the most!! Finally welcoming summer to Chicago! I went sailing on Lake Michigan and wore my @fridaypatterncompany #seabrightswimmer that I made with fabric from @fabricfairy I made a XL (b39w34h42). I shorted it 1/2” in the bodice and 1/2” in the bottoms (I am 5’3.5”) and I wish I didn’t because it is a little snug lengthwise. I made the suit fully lined (the pattern doesn’t call for the back too piece to be lined) and added bra cups. I really love the sun protection that the long sleeve offers! The project was also a quick fun sew - a perfect summer sewing palette cleanser between larger projects.

I’m not a swimsuit kind of gal, but there was something about the plunging neckline of the Seabright Swimmer that caught my attention. So, I decided to make a bodysuit instead of a swimsuit! Rather than use a traditional elastic or FOE (fold over elastic) for the neckline, I opted for a picot elastic that I had in my collection (it was extra from a bra that I made a few months ago). I’m not sure if it’s the lighter weight fabric or something else, but I don’t love this the way I expected to. That said, I’m going to make another one with a patterned fabric and see how I feel. You can expect to see it this winter, when I go on another bodysuit sewing expedition. The Seam Rippers Club pattern search strikes again, with a great selection of swimsuits. This #seabrightswimmer from @fridaypatterncompany is the best I’ve felt in a swimsuit in a very long time. I used @spoonflower Sport Lycra fabric, which was so easy to sew with. I made a S for the top and a L for the bottom. I skipped the gathering at the waist seam since I didn’t have as much fabric to overlap due to the size difference. I also added .5” of length to the bottom, 3” to the top, and 1” to the sleeves. I put a layer of power mesh between the lining and main fabric just on the front bottom piece, and sewed Dritz soft foam cups in using a catch stitch. I found myself in need of a swimsuit AGAIN this year when I realized that I put the watermelon bathing suit in a "safe place" last year. So safe, I cannot find it. 😔 On a whim, I decided to remake the pattern with some mods in this very sparkly fabric and be a disco ball mermaid all summer. This is the #seabrightswimmer pattern, and the mods I made were that I eliminated the bust rouching and overlapped the top pieces, and I removed about 2 inches from the length of the front at the crotch seam and scooped it out a touch so it was thinner between the legs. Overall, I am very pleased with it! Coverage is just right for me, though I do think I might scoop a smidge more on the next try. This is also unlined, which I would remedy next time even though it's a LOT more work. Swimwear was one of those things at the top of my list for ‘things I’m never going to make!’. I suppose I was worried about the fit, worried I would make something and really hate my body in it….which is kind of ironic I suppose as one of the things I love about sewing is that I can make things fit my body, especially things that I have always struggled to find in shops, and swimwear is 100% at the top of that list too! So when I found out I would be going on the 🐝 and we needed to sew swimwear I had no choice but to give it a go. I made myself a swimming costume for the first time and it didn’t disappointment in the slightest, even without any real fit adjustments I felt more comfortable and confident than I ever have in anything that I’ve bought. Holiday meant I needed to make some new swimwear, plus my body has changed since the show. I’ve sewn up the same pattern twice, it’s the @fridaypatterncompany #seabrightswimmer . This version is size XXL and I did a 1/2” full tummy adjustment. I hacked the pattern for the colour blocking, and yes I’m very satisfied with the seams lining up 👌🏻 I love the long sleeves - if it’s not obvious, I burn easy! 👩🏻‍🦰. I never thought I’d wear something with such a low neckline but I feel really good in this, and it withstands playing with children and all the holiday slides without any issues! (I’m definitely surprised about this!) I’ve got some swimwear sewing tips which I’ll share soon Fabric is from @newcrafthouse , it’s brilliant quality, I love the vibrancy of the colours, I’ve found some swimwear fabrics can be thin and trickier to work with but this was a great weight to sew, it’s got good stretch and it’s really comfy. If you watched the 🐝 you might notice it’s pretty reminiscent of the #sexybattenburg costume I made on the show, I couldn’t help myself, I love the look! The last make of 23 is an even bigger deal to display. The @fridaypatterncompany #seabrightswimmer made me feel sexy then I saw the photos. Bugger that, here they are cellulite and all because I deserve to be happy in swimmers at any size. This swimsuit is a dream to make with instructions that are so easy to follow. The next make would need to be lengthened slightly on top for me but other than that it’s fantastic. The fabric is from @wearethefabricstore in Surry Hills using the same fabric to line the top and a nude lining from @spotlightstores for the bottom. This pattern also features long sleeves which would be great for this Australian summer. As it is it is great for extra sun protection with a high back. My first #seabrightswimmer out in the wild! ☀️ No, I didn't actually swim in it today but it did well to withstand some rock pooling and being buried in sand and rocks on the beach?! 😂 I used the bottoms from the #seamworkmaggie bikini as I like the fit and shape, and made the top half of the Seabright in size L. The gingham swim fabric is from @funkifabrics, lined with powermesh and swimsuit lining from fit2sew.co.uk The construction was quite straightforward and this is quite a quick sew even though it feels like you go over the same parts many times for basting, sewing then top stitching the elastic! 🍒 #seabrightSwimmer against sunburn 🌊 . I'm sitting in the train to Aachen and looking at the pictures of my vacation last week. It was sooo nice in Croatia 😍 I would have loved to stay longer. . One memade that I wore the most was this #SeabrightSwimmer by @fridaypatterncompany - it's such a good idea to have a swimsuit that covers back, shoulders and arms if you want to stay in the sun in the water for longer times. I love to swim in the ocean 😍 so it was great not to have to worry about sunburn too much. . I already made this swimsuit two years ago (I think? 🤔). Now I think I want to make more, maybe even a separate rash guard that I can combine with a classic bikini. .
