#BRAugust2022: Beach/pool Swimwear is definitely one of my most satisfying projects to conquer. I love wearing me-made swim for a thousand reasons, and mine see pretty even action between the pool and the ocean. Here are some makes from this year! #S9609 / #VernazzaTwoPiece mashup: I love these colors and the style lines on me! The sizing was consistent with other Madalynne patterns. I used the Vernazza bottoms since I like the cut and was too lazy to toile 9609. I’m proud of my sneaky two-piece hack (easier bathroom breaks and I can wear the bottoms with other tops!) #TarleeTee / #MNCottesloe - I won the Tarlee in #BRAugust last year! I made this a snug-fitting crop version and I still want a looser, full-length version to layer over other tops. I made a lot of adjustments to the Cottesloe bottoms and these are ultimately wearable, but I’ve come to accept I do not like their curvy block on me. #HannaBralette / #NoellePanty : I used the bralette pattern for the top (the updated pattern with cup sizes fits so well, even though the overall size range is still small). I wish my ruffle was more ruffly, but this fabric takes all the attention anyways 💁‍♀️ #VernazzaTwoPiece : I love this swim fabric (stretchy but supportive) but I have mixed feelings about Vernazza. The top seems to have a *lot* of negative ease and very minimal bust coverage. I had to scoop out the arms a bit (common for my narrow shoulders) but the bottoms fit well! #makenine2024 report back (while I wonder whether I should try to whip up a #vernazzatwopiece before tomorrow): reasonable success. I didn’t make the #howerdelskirt but did make a different skirt and I did make a sweater but not an oversized one. #misusucuddlecardigan has not been photographed (it’s black) but I love love love it. A lot more sewing was done that was not recorded or reported on but that is okay. My favourite makes of the year are #twigandtale for sure. I might attempt more woven in 2025 once my cut pile (large and growing and exclusively knit) has reduced.

I made a swim suit! And I don’t know how to pose for photos 🙃 I made the #VernazzaTwoPiece from @fridaypatterncompany and I am super pleased with how it turned out! I made a straight medium for the top and for the bottoms I measured to a large but I cut a medium front and XL back. I also adjusted the line out a bit based on the adjustments I made for my Elysian bodysuit. This is the first time ever in my adult life that swim bottoms have fit me properly 😭 No baggy diaper in the front or wedgie in the back. Just a perfect fit for my 🍑 This was a super quick and easy project and I can’t wait to make another one! For my next one I plan to adjust the top a bit, it cuts in a bit at the arm pits. I’ll also go a little shorter on the leg elastic for a tighter fit. If you’ve been wanting to make a swimsuit, this is your sign! Go for it! I made this one with some dead stock swim we had last year. We have some great swim fabrics in stock now that are bright and fun! Let me know which one you think I should use for my next suit. Maybe I'll find the bravery at some point to post pictures wearing this make, but for now, this is how it will be documented! First time making swimwear, it was a lot easier than I imagined and I already have another pattern lined up to make. Pattern: Friday Pattern Company vernazza two-piece @fridaypatterncompany #vernazzatwopiece Pattern size used: M My measurements: 5'10", 35.5", 29", 38"/1.78m, 90cm, 74cm, 96.5cm Pattern modifications: none, I would probably elongate the top about 1" next time I make it, but I didn't have enough fabric. I did use the optional waistband elastic on the top and bottom band and added some foam cups reused from a bikini I no longer wear. I also accidentally added the leg elastic to the wrong side, but they still fit fine! Fabric: swimwear fabric bought from someone via the makersresale account

Close but not quite on my first attempt at swimwear. This is the #vernazzatwopiece by @fridaypatterncompany. The top is a mess and I sewed the armhole elastic to the wrong side (rookie mistake), but the bottoms aren’t so bad. Next time I’m sizing up the top, using fabric with a bit more 4 way stretch, getting extra thread, and triple checking that I have my elastic on the correct side. I made a swimsuit! Making a swimsuit was not really on my list of things to try, but my partner and I decided we were going to take a trip to the beach and my very old bathing suit was in rough shape. This is the Vernazza Two Piece by @fridaypatterncompany . I chose this pattern because I love the design, but also because I knew that Friday Pattern company would have thorough instructions and a video to help! This bathing suit is 100% better than any bathing suit I have ever bought because, well, it fits! Bathing suits are always too long for me and it's really great to get the rise and straps just right. I made swimmers! This project only took me about 3 years. I bought the fabric pattern and all the hardware in 2021 but have been too scared to give it a go. I did also buy the @closetcorepatterns online class that went with the pattern but still resisted. Part of my hesitation is I have a big difference between my bust and under bust measurement so lots of swimmers don’t fit well or give me much support. Hence I went for the rolls Royce of supportive swimwear - the #closetcoresophie bikini top. This has underwire which seemed a daunting prospect but was actually pretty straight forward. I followed the excellent online course (highly recommend) and the swimmer fit perfectly. I was so happy with them that I have bought fabric for a colour blocked version! I’m on the #makenine2025 wagon. There’s one repeat from last time that I really need to get on with. I actually struggled to come up with enough this year. Mostly because I have a stack of basics to sew for Mr nearly 9 who is growing out of all his pants. I will make him a few new patterns too though. It feels weird posting pictures of my swimsuit, but I’m glad to finally finish this one. The top is probably my favorite swim top pattern #vernazzatwopiece . I like the cute tie details, yet it still stays put for everything I put it through. I made the matching bottoms a few months ago. The lighting is weird in these photos, but this top also coordinates with several other swim pieces I made. The solid green one is the bottoms of the Vernazza two piece. I think I may make even more changes to get a better fit. I have learned a lot about swimwear and altering patterns.

I didn’t make any new swimsuits this year, but luckily I have several from previous years! This is the #VernazzaTwoPiece by @fridaypatterncompany which I made in an athletic knit from @blackbirdfabrics. I’ve been really impressed with the longevity of the swimwear I’ve made. Here’s the completed @fridaypatterncompany #vernazzatwopiece swimsuit. It was a fun make, as Friday Pattern Co. patterns tend to be. It fits perfectly and is very sexy — I was concerned it would be more for laying around the pool instead of swimming IN the pool. I’m pleased to confirm, it stays put!! Very smart design. I like a swim suit that looks good and can handle doing laps, diving etc. Fabric is from @themakehousecoop in Victoria. It’s gorgeous. Hoping for a few more warm days! #sewswimwear #sewing

I'm so pleased with my first go at sewing swimwear! I used the #vernazzatwopiece pattern by @fridaypatterncompany after seeing @paigejoannaa make a fab version, and the instructions were really easy to follow. I made mine with Liberty swim fabric and swim elastic from @fabricgodmother and lined it with the same fabric. I'm so happy with the fit and the style and felt so confident wearing it to have fun at the beach with my family yesterday.

First hand made swimsuit in the books! I made the #vernazzatwopiece by @fridaypatterncompany in a turquoise swim fabric that was a little on the light side to be honest but great to practice with. Took me a little while to get my tension right on the machine as the swim fabric was fiddly and I was losing patience almost from the get go. Eventually, I got the hang of it and I definitely feel like the next venture into swimwear will be easier. I made the XL in both top and bottom and added cups to the top as well as elastic on the top hem band for a little more stability. I did not have enough of my main fabric so one of my ties is my lining fabric (as they instructions tell you to line the top with the main fabric) but this doesn't bother me too much as the color is fairly close to my skin tone. Now the question is do I make the same suit again or something different? Any of my sewist friends have a swim wear suggestion that can't be beat? I made a bathing suit! 👙…kind of. I wanted to try out the @fridaypatterncompany #vernazzatwopiece pattern but since I’ve never made it before and didn’t want to risk getting the sizing wrong on my precious swimwear fabric I figured I would make a mock up using some @joann_stores knit fabric i got on clearance last year. It was also nice to do a run through of all the techniques, which were explained well and ended up being quite easy (though with slippery swimwear may be another story…). While the fabric I used isn’t an accurate representation of how swimwear fabric would feel or fit, it was still helpful to see how different parts fit my body. 📏I made a size small for the top and a size medium for the bottom. The bottoms are perfect, I will make them exactly as I did here but add an elastic to the waist band. The top I have to keep working on, which is why I’m glad I did a test run! The girls are tricky after having 3 kids and they were busting out of this in surprising ways and places 😂 I’m going to make a medium tester and see how that goes. I absolutely love the pattern and design and it was way easier to make than I was expecting! I’m even more excited to make my “real” suit now! Reminder to self: Liberty swimsuiting and my machine don’t like each other. This top has taken me hours, yards of unpicking and a full reel of thread. Unlike the bikini I made last week, it has caused skipped stitches despite stich changes, needle changes, different tension, you name it. I’ve ended up going incredibly slowly and just about getting away with a microtex needle and the lightning bolt stitch on my machine but it has been an absolute ball ache and brought me zero joy. Given the only differences from last week are fabric source and pattern choice, and I’m confident the pattern has nothing to do with it, it must be the fabric. I’ve been loving my blended #twinlakestwopiece and #vernazzatwopiece swimsuit this summer and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Thought I would share some details about the fit (which is perfect by the way!). Number one rule of sewing swimwear is make sure you have a stretch needle, not a jersey needle. I learned this the hard way. Using a jersey needle in spandex will give you lots of skipped stitches. Thankfully I figured this out and spared myself a lot of grief! As for the fit, I knew the Twin Lakes bottoms were a bit too cheeky for my liking for swimwear so instead I chose the Vernazza pattern for those. At first fitting there was way too much length in the crotch and wonky drag-lines but I was able to fix that by simply removing about one inch. The rest was smooth sailing! I love the Twin Lakes top as swimwear because it’s soooo comfortable. Literally the most comfortable swimsuit I’ve ever worn. I had no issues with the actual fit other than the straps being a tad too long which was an easy fix. I opted to line it with some spandex that I think is also meant for dance-wear and was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t need to add bra cups at all. Fun little detail is the print I chose was inspired by my husband’s recent work trip he took to Arizona. from my home to the beach!! 🪿 this is a 2 pattern combo — the top is the deservingly popular #cowriekini by @paradisepatterns. I made a size C with the solid back band, but it’s a bit too compressive. next time I’ll size up to a D in the front. the cowrie’s french cut bottoms are so fun but out of my comfort zone, so I instead used the bottoms from the #vernazzatwopiece by @fridaypatterncompany. I modified the size XS pattern pieces and made several toiles to achieve the shape I wanted and to incorporate the fold over elastic (last photo). happy to report that it fits my lil butt pretty well. sewing swimwear was one of my goals for the year so yay me!! the fabric is slippery (a fabric glue stick helped me achieve a clean FOE finish) but it’s not too different from sewing with knits. bonus points for not having to use a serger and for creating a fairly reversible set. materials cost 💸 — patterns: #cowriekini by @paradisepatterns ($12) and #vernazzatwopiece by @fridaypatterncompany ($9.80) — fabric: the main and lining fabrics are from a @blackbirdfabrics sale. I used about 1/3 meter of each so ~$10 — notions: fold over elastic from @elasticbytheyard ($4.30) (not going to total this one since it’s a bit chaotic but overall an affordable and not super time consuming make!)
