Hmmmm, so on reflection of my #makenine2022 it does not appear to have gone very well. From the number completed it doesn't seem like I made very much in the year but my wardrobe seems to be showing something different. I think it is time for a clear out. Below are a list of the plans I had and the current status of them: 1. Nina lee - Camden. I have cut out the fabric and it is ready to sew. 2. Friday Pattern Company - Heather Blazer Fabric has been picked but just need to conquer the cutting out! 3. Deer and Doe - Sirocco Complete and loving it! 4. Sew Over it - Niamh skirt Cut out and it is ready to sew. 5. Grainline Studio - Thayer Finished and it has become a staple jacket since then 6. Tilly and the buttons - Nora cardigan Problems were had and posted at the time... 7. Sew Over It - Libby Shirt Cut out and ready to sew. 8. Simplicity McCalls - 1887 I made shorts initially in this pattern and wear them a lot in the summer, I have sewed up the trousers but don't like the fit so haven't actually worn them. 9. I have been looking for clog style shoe in thrift stores for a long time and man it’s pretty hard to find a plain-ish pair. But I found these yesterday! I took a bit of a break from sewing over Christmas and into the new year, mostly as I was away from home (and my sewing machine) a lot! Finally took photos of the first Heather Blazer I made. I’ve worn this a fair bit, it’s a good basic and came with me overseas for judging as it is quite smart. The pants I haven’t worn so much, they are Simplicity 9381 which I shared back in July as they were a bit of fail. I’ve since unpicked and taken out the second pleat and taken about 4” out of the upper leg volume. They are much less poofy now so I’m fairly happy with them, I just haven’t had too much opportunity to wear them. Both the jacket and pants are made in a lovely Japanese technical fabric from The Fabric Store. It has a slight stretch, is silky soft but also takes an iron. Despite being poly the fabric is lovely, the Japanese really know how to make fabric. I’ve lined the jacket with cute kitty lining bought at ClearIt in Melbourne, sadly now closed. pant dreams come true ≐ I was so inspired by the new range of @stagnistudio so I tried to recreate one of their looks. I wasn’t game to draft my own for that one, so I used @simplicity_creative_group #8056 and added a seam line along the travellers crease. (Is that the right word? The front seam on each leg, is it called a princess seam?) I cut a size 14 which ended up fine around the hips & length but about 6inches too wide at the waist band. This pattern gives 3 options - slim, average and curvy. I cut the average fit, and the way the pattern and waistband are constructed makes it really easy to make adjustments. I took 1 inch out the front & back at the waist side seam and tapered it out at the pocket, and 1 inch out of each side at center back waist. And I have to say the fit turned out amazing!! This was going to be a wearable #toile for a suit I’m planning, so I used cheap #rayontwill from @lincraft that I got on sale. I’m really loving the fabric & colour, so I think I’ll get some more to make my matching blazer. And I’ll save my special #spike Eukalyptus fabric from @drapersfabrics for another special project. Or I might make two suits, so I can wear them on rotation ⟳ ⟳ ⟳ 🙌🏼 Now I just have to find a matching blazer pattern. I’ve made the @simplicity_creative_group #8697 heaps of times and it’s a great shape - but the fabric is so light, that I’ll need to interface it - so I think a blazer with lining would be better suited. (haha pun intended) Has anyone made the new #heatherblazer from @fridaypatterncompany ? Tank is self drafted and made from the most luxurious rib knit from @wearethefabricstore on my new cover stitch machine 🧡 The stitching turned out a bit wobbly, still trying to master the machine. I was recently a groomswoman at a good friend's wedding and was given a brief for a cream-coloured suit. Needless to say I immediately knew exactly which patterns I would be making 😏 The trousers are my favourite trouser pattern- #msworkertrousers by @modern_sewing_co . I actually wanted to make the #msspringtrousers initially but was silly and didn't order enough fabric.. nevertheless I love the workers and they have already had a lot of wear in my day to day life since i've made them! The jacket is the #Heatherblazer by @fridaypatterncompany which i've only ever made once as an occasion piece, so unfortunately it hasn't gotten much wear. I've been meaning to make it again in a neutral colour and so this was a perfect excuse! I also lined it with some leftover block print fabric which I was pretty pleased with until i noticed the day after wearing this outfit that the dyes had stained the tops of my trousers green 😢 (luckily it's subtle enough that it hasn't stopped me wearing them) The fabric is a lovely cotton/linen blend with a bit of stretch from @minervadotcom , gifted as part of the ambassador scheme. I have to say I'm really leaning more towards natural fibres with a bit of elastane content as the fabric creases so much less. I have no idea how that impacts its sustainability so if anyone is the wiser I would love to be educated! Another backlogged make now in all its grid glory! • I made this #heatherblazer from @fridaypatterncompany after scoring this gorgeous wool at the thrift store. A full 2 yards of 100% wool for $5! I had just enough to make my TNT blazer pattern, and this time I swapped the patch pockets for the welt pockets from the #closetcorejasika and added a back cinch to give it a touch more shaping at the waist. • For this pattern, I typically make an XS and raise the armscye by 3/4”. I shorten both the body and sleeves by 2”. I love the internal structure of sewing a blazer, a skill set that I have developed using the “Classic Tailoring Techniques” book and @juliabobbin as a resource. I think that padstitching and taping the roll line are an absolute must, plus I love how it helps me slow down and enjoy the process a bit more. • I didn’t add shoulder pads to this blazer and used a Deadstock viscose for the lining, so the total materials cost was less than $20. Oooh I’m so excited! After feeling a bit overwhelmed with my pattern and fabric stash my sew-jo had ebbed somewhat, so I decided to shop my stash and try to do a #makenine2024 to get inspired again. Can’t wait to get cracking! Super chuffed I’m using so much of my #secondhand stash too ♻️ BUT what it has highlighted to me is, whilst part of my reason for shopping second hand is to be more sustainable and not over consume, I have definitely built a bigger fabric and pattern stash than I realistically need. 👖👖👖👖It’s reveal day 👖👖👖👖👖 Today is the day myself and the very lovely @kmovern reveal our jeans as part of our #sewjeanswithus where we both made the @megannielsenpatterns #mnashjeans I have loved being part of this collab with Karen Marie! Head over to her page to take a peek at her fabulous pair!! 🩷 I made a toile of the slim version in a straight size 14 which came out quite well but was too high waisted for me, so I made the skinny version in a size 14 but reduced the rise by 2” so used the yoke and waistband of the size 18 as was laid out in the Megan Nelson blog about shortening the rise! I’m so happy with how they came out!!! The fabric is gorgeous denim from @driessenstoffen.nl 👖 I used a great @thespeckyseamstress leather patch on my toile and a @little.rosy.cheeks label on my second version. I MADE TROUSERS! After #DawnGate and days of pattern surgery, I wanted an easy win. And ta da! My @untitledthoughts #UTChandlerPants! Made in a day. I made the pleated "pants" size H (the biggest) and added two inches to the inseam and an inch to the rise and they fit really well. I actually compare them to my @winmichele L ruler to get the rise right, it's a useful tool. The fabric is a charcoal grey cupro twill from @rainbowfabrickilburn, I got 3m a while ago at full price (like £7/m) and then in their remnant sale for another 2m for £4! And yes, that is destined to be a matching @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer Worn with my @untitledthoughts #utnathalie in H with a 1inch FBA in black bamboo jersey from @raystitch. Mine is not a #makenine2022 - because it never worked for me - but: -first slide: some bottoms I need to sew to fill gaps in my wardrobe/ try new patterns I've bought but not sewn yet: #pantalonsteven by @ose__patterns if it works it can become a good staple; #danipants by @truebias, the same as above; #soitulipskirt @sewoverit many suggested this pattern when I shared a picture of a RTW skirt with pleated front so I decided to give this pattern a second chance (wasn't happy with my first try) and male it in grey wool 'cause I realised I have no grey skirt; #soiavaskirt also @sewoverit a TNT on constant repeat but I want to make some colourful/playful versions; #catlmv @la_maison_victor_fr THE TNT pattern to me, classic trousers with pleats and tapered leg, I need a black wool one; #deelmv also by @la_maison_victor_fr I made a grey tartan version (still haven't showed here) I'm already in love with this pattern and I want a second version (also tartan I think). On January 1, I decided to make an outfit to wear to my birthday party — which was 48 hours away. I shopped my stash and selected this acorn colored dead stick brushed poly viscose stretch suiting from @blackbirdfabrics for the blazer and a wool suiting from @moodfabrics for the skirt. The lining for the blazer is left over poly satin from my test wedding dress. Super thrilled with how both turned out – and this oversized brown blazer is a piece that I feel like was missing from my wardrobe. When I saw this bow drill on the @spotlightstores website last week that was it, it needed to be a suit! Pulled out my trusty #heatherblazer and #kitepants patterns and whipped this up. Is it over the top? Yes. Does it look like pjs? Maybe. But for a $50ish dollar cheeky suit I’m in love 🎀

My favourite suit combo so far - and this is my second matching suit with #tatjanatrousers and #heatherblazer. Fabric used is a soft wool viscose mix suiting, which is very comfy! . Pants Pattern: Tatjana trousers from @just_patterns Modifications: I made the waist a bit wider than the size that fit my hip, since my body is apple shaped. I did this in the side seam mainly, and just a tiny bit in the front pleats. . Blazer Pattern: Heather blazer from @fridaypatterncompany Modifications: I’ve straightened the curve of the upper back to fit my body better, and reduced the side seam a little.

This project was a real test of patience & proof that cutting out when tired is always a bad idea. I’ve made the Heather blazer before and it fits nicely, so I naively cut out my fabric using the pattern I had on hand. It wasn’t until I’d mostly sewn it up that I realised I must have printed & cut the pattern twice. The version I used was 2 sizes too big and had none of the adjustments I needed. I’ve managed to make it more wearable by adding shoulder pads and cropping 4 inches off the length, but I still feel like I’m wearing my dad’s jacket. My employers have owned my workplace for 20 years, and of course I had to make myself a whole new outfit for the celebration dinner! 🪡 This is the #leabiasdress by @soften_studio in the comfiest rayon blend from @spotlightstores. I bought this pattern months ago but was daunted by the bias part of it, although I really didn’t need to worry as the instructions were super clear and this was a quick and easy sew!! I paired it with my fourth version of the @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer in a linen blend also from Spotlight. I started sewing the blazer at 7.30pm the night before the event, and finished with only an hour to spare! I decided to shorten this version by 16cm which was a super easy adjustment to the pattern. Will I make a fifth Heather Blazer in the future? Probably. Will I make a second Lea Bias Dress? Definitely!!!!!

On a roll with sewing outerwear... after putting off attempting a jacket for ages, I've now followed the bomber with a blazer! 💖 This is the @fridaypatterncompany Heather Blazer. I really like the oversized, relaxed boxy style which makes it easy to fit and of course the big pockets. Doh! I made a wearable toile of the #heatherblazer for @hazzle.frazzle and delivered it to her in person in Amsterdam. Completely forgot to take a photo and the only one I have of the jacket nearly complete is from last week when I was asking her to choose the button. The orange linen fabric has been in my stash for at least three years but came from @rainbowfabrickilburn as did the caramel coloured cupro lining. Since she’s a Dutch resident this will come in handy if #koningsdag or King’s day is chilly and since this happens in late April there’s a fairly high chance. Outfit reveal for our friends wedding in San Francisco over last weekend! Night one: I made @aliabickson a #heatherblazer from @fridaypatterncompany in linen our neighbour found at the thrift store I wore the #eddycardiganblazer and #flaneurpants from @fridaypatterncompany in linen found at @oursocialfabric I added welted pockets to the blazer instead of appliqué since the printed pattern on the fabric was too precious to cover up. Night two: I’ve been making the #archershirt from @grainlinestudio many times because the fit is so good! Make this one our of cotton stretch from @oursocialfabric. I used a matching silky satin fabric also from our social fabric to make the #tiedress from @yoursara_k This was so fun!

Happy New Make day!!! Say hello to the most adorable scrap busting project: the clever Soleil Hat (#bbsoleilhat), by my ever favourite @buckandbloompatterns! I have made several Buck and Bloom Patterns’ garments for the boys and unfailingly the patterns are beautiful, super comfy to wear and explore the world in, and quick and satisfying to put together. The Soleil Hat can be personalised in so many ways: four brims (this is “classic”, there are “mini”, “full”, and “extra wide wrap around” options too), eight animal add-ons (or no the animal option, I guess, but why would one go for that?!?!), optional neck protection! The sizing is also expansive: 0-6 months all the way to teen/adult size! The instructions are clear and simple to follow and produce a fully lined cap that’s ready for explorers who want to go out and see the world! My favourite part of this project has been that I got to plan it together with The Toddler: I showed him the beautifully illustrated instructions PDF and asked him what options he liked: he asked for dino spikes (no surprise there!) and neck protection (surprise there, but then again is a ghostly white child with a hatred for sun cream and a mother paranoid about sun damage, so he’s being clever there!). Alas the toddler heart is fickle and just before leaving the house to go to nursery, The Toddler decided he didn’t need a hat and this one was “too scary” anyway. There is no pleasing them! Other favourite aspect: this is part one of a matching hat triad! Soon me, The Toddler, and The Baby will all have Buck and Bloom hats in this pretty stripy denim: similar but not same-same! Keep your eyes peeled to see more!!! Recently I was at The Fabric Store and they were having their 50% off sale. I wasn’t intending on buying anything, but this wool blend berry suiting fabric called to me and I couldn’t resist. I really love this colour and immediately envisaged a fun suit. The pants are Simplicity 8842, one of their amazing fit patterns. With a little downsizing I’m super happy with the fit of these. The pattern is fairly generous even when using suggested measurements. They have some great details like a proper fly, the pockets are faced and there’s a faux welt pocket on the rear. The blazer is the Heather Blazer, sized down from last time I made it as I’m a bit smaller these days. This is my new favourite winter wardrobe colour, I particularly love it with khaki. I’ve already worn the pants several times both with and without the blazer. I liked the wool/cotton suiting fabric that I used for my #heatherblazer and #mnharper shorts so much that I got more before it sold out. The #closetcorepietra pants are always such a pleasure to sew. I think there’s just something oddly satisfying about seeing seemingly random notches on multiple pieces come together in perfect alignment. It’s like solving a puzzle. Oh, and I have a small bit of fabric left from the Pietra pants, so this only means I’m making one more piece from the same fabric 💃🏾. Coming soon!

#makenine2025 update I’m not sure how we’re halfway through the year already, but here we are! Time for a little progress report on my #makenine: 1. My @sewhouse7 #toastersweater2 is done, but the neckline didn’t quite work for me - no fault of the pattern; I think I should have just sized up. I ended up modifying the neckline and am much happier now. 2. @fibremood #fibremoodbetty - I had a sturdy blue denim version planned, but the fabric I got was very lightweight. It’s still going to get lots of wear, but not too sure about the sturdiness.. 3. The plan was to make a #fibremoodtilly, but then @lotteundludwig released the #papillonebook which I fell in love with instantly, so I made that one (or three) instead. 4. I love a great basic wardrobe staple, and that’s exactly what this @tillybuttons #sewingbobbi skirt is. Simple and versatile and something I know I’ll reach for often. 5. @tillybuttons #sewingbillie was my first make this year I think, using this fab fabric from @rasmussons_shop. 6. The @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer is still on my list, I just have to work up the courage to tackle this one! 7. I batch cut two @rabaukowitsch #frolleinkluntje trousers last month. I can finally share my @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer which I made in collaboration with Becky from @notes_from_the_sewing_room This was a bit of a labour of love as I had to make adjustments to all 9 pattern pieces, which included the main fabric & the lining. This is because I am petite at only 4’ 11” and the blazer would have been too long for me I made a size medium. I used a gorgeous stretch denim from @fabricgodmother called “Wyld” and I added a beautiful black sandwashed satin from @sewmesunshine.uk for the lining The label on the outside was from @little.rosy.cheeks and the label inside is from @cosyclubhandmade I finished this jacket back in April & have already worn it a few times. I am travelling with work and packed my #memades so decided if was a good change to post some makes that have yet to hit the grid. Thus is the #heatherblazer by @fridaypatterncompany in linen from @wearethefabricstore and lining thrifted silk from @achievesewingbasket I made this about a year ago but hadn’t go around to the button or button hole. I wore it unfinished a few times (does anyone else do this?) got it dirty - had to wash it and the interfacing a bubbled in the wash. Have finally got around to fixing it! #SewingInspiration We have been asked what you can make with our Linen Cotton Jacquard fabrics and the answer is lots! This fabric is fairly light weight for a linen blend, at 125gsm, and has similar qualities to a gauze but heavier. It can be used for shirts, dresses, loose trousers, shorts or jumpsuits and lightweight jackets. For something like the Heather Blazer which is lined this fabric would also be suitable. Heather Blazer Well if you have been following along on my stories you know I have had a wee hyper-fixation on the oversized woollen blazer look. It's another one of those patterns I bought on release but only got around to stitching years later. I was new to sewing when the @fridaypatterncompany Heather Blazer was released: but being described as beginner friendly, I decided to give it a go. So I got a little distracted and tried other, more complicated patterns in the interim, but now that I've made it, I love the ease with which the Heather comes together. It really is suitable for anyone who'd like to try constructing a blazer for the first time. Being oversized, there are minimal fitting issues to think about. What's more, the techniques used in the instructions are so cleverly conceived and explained that you're not likely to get stuck at any point. And even if you do, I'm pretty sure FPC have a tutorial for that (they have such an amazing blog and YouTube). I've used a stretch woven linen from @minervadotcom in a copper shade (I just seem to gravitate to these colours), and this fabric was amazing to work with. I made a size XL with the only adjustment being to shorten the blazer by 2 inches (I'm not quite 5ft1, so, with this being oversized, I didn't want drowned by length). If I was making it again I'd do a narrow shoulder adjustment but, other than that, I am so happy with how this pattern works for me - and, generally speaking, I don't like oversized, boxy patterns. From cutting to finishing, this only took 3 hours, which amazed me! I thought it would have taken a couple of days to sew! Another one ticked off my 2023 make 9 list, this is the Heather Blazer! I made it in a lovely lightweight wool blend from The Fabric Store, with a matching rayon lining. I followed the pattern pretty much exactly, though I wish I had interfaced the entire back and the top of the sleeve head as well as the front, I just feel like the soft wool is collapsing a bit in a way that looks a bit sloppy… next time I would definitely consider that, and would also do welt pockets and maybe trim some length off the hem too. I’m just not 100% sure how to wear this now that it’s finished? I’m hoping it’ll be good for office wear, I guess I’ll just need to try it out with some stuff. I am so behind in posting the things that I've made recently, and I'm going to start with this gorgeous coat I finished early January. It's the Heather Blazer from @fridaypatterncompany made from this green wool of my dreams from @saltlakesewciety. I sized up when selecting my pattern size to accommodate for a thick lining, which is a quilted piece of rayon from @harmonyprovo. I quilted it myself on my mom's longarm with another layer of cotton and some cotton/poly bathing, making this coat extremely toasty. My first post for 2024 is my last garment make of 2023. I made the @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer in this gorgeous navy velvet that I was gifted, so kindly, by a fellow sewist on here @suzi.sew 🙏🙏🙏 It's taken me a year and half to find the right project but so worth the wait! This blazer is roomy. I made a large based on my measurements, and it feels so comfortable. I think what has put me off this kind of jacket in the past is the constriction I have felt. Not so with this. I did buy shoulder pads especially to add, but sewed it up forgetting to add them! 🤦Will have to make another! I am enjoying January (most people don't) to decltter and hunker down and knit. More on that in my next post. I call this my gateway blazer. The Heather blazer is a great place to get your footing for coat making. It’s unstructured, straightforward, with the possibility to stretch your skills and dive into tailoring if you so choose to 🪡 I made it in about 2 1/2 days, before and after work (and on a lunch break one if the days) so it’s a quick see if you’re fairly confident sewist. I took it on a recent work tri @joann_stores and it was the perfect outer layer to dress up or down. My Heather Blazers first outing today. I love the colour but I did almost have to force myself to have a go at wearing it, I think it might be too oversized for me? I maybe need to look at taking it in a bit but I can’t face unpicking the lining at the moment. The fabric is a linen suiting from @spotlightstores which is really lovely and soft. Top is self drafted and pants are heavily modified New Look. Impressed that I’ve managed 100% me mades so far. Although I guess all of my more recent wardrobe additions are things I’ve made so there’s probably some recency bias. Six months ago I’d never have dreamt that I’d be able to make something like this. Definitely my most ambitious project so far , and one that I’m absolutely over the moon with. This is the @fridaypatterncompany Heather Blazer, another project from the @sewconfident CCC SS24. The fabric in the box was a neutral linen, giving us free rein to dye if we wanted. This is Dylon ‘orchid’, and I’m really pleased with the result. I don’t think I’ve worn a blazer since about 1986, but this transforms a jeans and t-shirt into a go-anywhere outfit. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my most worn pieces. HEATHER BLAZER Deze #blazer stond al zooo lang op mijn #tosewlist en nu vond ik ineens (in mijn eigen kast nota bene) de perfecte stof! Een stonewashed cotton van @driessenstoffen.nl. De voering is er ook eentje uit de voorraad en de knoop viste ik uit de #knopendoos. Dat maakt dit project toch wel extra leuk. Ik moet zeggen dat ik nooit eerder een blazer maakte en er een beetje tegenop zag, maar dit patroon van @fridaypatterncompany is erg goed te doen! After the success of making Lola some joggers and a hoodie out of fleece fabric Ruby requested something out of fleece too She chose this fun and colourful fabric from @sewmesunshine.uk and settled on a blazer as the garment she wanted I looked in my stash for a pattern that might work and decided to try and use the @fridaypatterncompany heather blazer pattern It was a bit of a risk as the pattern calls for woven fabrics but I’m always happy to experiment and try something new I was nervous about how the fabric would behave and press but I needn’t have been worried. It grew slightly when I interfaced the pattern pieces so I just made sure I re-cut those pieces once they were interfaced. It pressed well and didn’t melt with the heat of the iron either I didn’t pattern match when making this blazer as I only had 2 metres of fabric and I didn’t want to waste any of the beautiful fabric either I used black lining fabric I bought from @newcrafthouse ages ago as I wanted the outside of the jacket to shine To finish the jacket off I added a button hole manually using a narrow zig zag stitch and we chose a bright pink button I’ve had in my stash for a while that was given to me by the lovely @sewn_on_the_tyne as part of a gift exchange I know I’m Ruby’s Mum but I think Roo rocks the jacket and looks super cool! Power suit of DREAMS 🩷🖤 When @fridaypatterncompany put a call out for people to walk the catwalk at @thestitchfestival , I decided to put myself forward, despite it being wayyyy out of my comfort zone. As you probably know, I’m a HUGE Friday Pattern Co fan and have sewn the majority of their patterns, but I wanted to sew up something new for this occasion. I had a vision - a 90s / Clueless inspired suit using the #HeatherBlazer & #BernadetteSkirt and I knew that @1stforfabrics had the PERFECT fabric ~ A fuchsia pink & black houndstooth 🩷🖤 This was my first time making the Heather Blazer, but what a brilliant sew. I enjoyed every minute and it was a great entry in to sewing this style of garment, which was definitely new to me. I made a Size Medium (my measurements are 36/28/38 and I’m 5ft6”) and I think it’s pretty much the perfect fit. I usually have to make a broad shoulder adjustment on patterns but I measured the pattern pieces beforehand & decided it wasn’t necessary. I decided to keep the lining simple and just used a black lining fabric, also from @1stforfabrics The skirt is the #BernadetteSkirt - a pattern I’ve made once before and loved. Again I made a M, but I think I could have gotten away with the S. I wear mine super high waisted, so I needed the belt bag to cinch it in. Speaking of the #BernieBeltBag ~ how cute?! I opted for a plain black cotton drill (again from @1stforfabrics ) as I knew the houndstooth would be too thick. I love how it stands out and adds a contrast. The super cute heart button is @beckys_sewing_studio It’s amazing how your clothing can make you feel. I actually got a little emotional on Saturday morning when I looked in the mirror - I felt SO good in this outfit. I felt confident, powerful, stylish. And getting so many people coming up to me to compliment me on it - including the style queen that is @suzysankeystudio - was just the icing on the cake. The catwalk itself was a brilliant experience - being surrounded by so many inspirational makers and such a supportive audience was just amazing. Thank you so much to @1stforfabrics & @fridaypatterncompany & @thestitchfestival for this opportunity!

I’ve sewn both the #heatherblazer and the new #eddycardiganblazer by @fridaypatterncompany to compare how they work for me and my body shape. I actually ended up really loving both for different reasons. I really like the shaping in the Eddy and also the curved front and pockets and vent detail. I also like the minimalism of no collar. The Heather is definitely boxier, possibly too boxy on me so I plan to sew another one with some shaping a la Eddy…. Size wise, the Heather is a Small with 2 inches taken off the length and the Eddy is a Medium. I did a narrow shoulder adjustment on both of them. I am so behind in posting the things that I've made recently, and I'm going to start with this gorgeous coat I finished early January. It's the Heather Blazer from @fridaypatterncompany made from this green wool of my dreams from @saltlakesewciety. I sized up when selecting my pattern size to accommodate for a thick lining, which is a quilted piece of rayon from @harmonyprovo. I quilted it myself on my mom's longarm with another layer of cotton and some cotton/poly bathing, making this coat extremely toasty. Six months ago I’d never have dreamt that I’d be able to make something like this. Definitely my most ambitious project so far , and one that I’m absolutely over the moon with. This is the @fridaypatterncompany Heather Blazer, another project from the @sewconfident CCC SS24. The fabric in the box was a neutral linen, giving us free rein to dye if we wanted. This is Dylon ‘orchid’, and I’m really pleased with the result. I don’t think I’ve worn a blazer since about 1986, but this transforms a jeans and t-shirt into a go-anywhere outfit. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my most worn pieces. Decided to try the #fridaypatterncompanyheatherblazer. I used this fabric from my stash, bought about 4 years ago I think! It feels like a thick cotton with quite a lot of stretch so not a recommended fabric for the Heather Blazer but I like to live dangerously! As I was treating this as a toile and I was not planning to line it this fabric seemed ok. I made a size large but looking at the finished garment I think I needed to go down a size as it seems very wide on the shoulders and around the upper arms. Will take note of this if/when I make another one. It was an enjoyable make and the first time I had made a jacket for several decades so I revisited some old techniques 😁. The only issue I had was trying to do a buttonhole. My buttonhole foot and I have a very strained relationship. After 4 attempts I admitted defeat and accepted a more casual open jacket 🤣. TW: MC/Loss Finally finding my sewing mojo again after having a loss over the holidays. I am in a place where I feel like I can measure my body, and appreciate it now that the physical changes of the ordeal has passed. My first post for 2024 is my last garment make of 2023. I made the @fridaypatterncompany #heatherblazer in this gorgeous navy velvet that I was gifted, so kindly, by a fellow sewist on here @suzi.sew 🙏🙏🙏 It's taken me a year and half to find the right project but so worth the wait! This blazer is roomy. I made a large based on my measurements, and it feels so comfortable. I think what has put me off this kind of jacket in the past is the constriction I have felt. Not so with this. I did buy shoulder pads especially to add, but sewed it up forgetting to add them! 🤦Will have to make another! I am enjoying January (most people don't) to decltter and hunker down and knit. More on that in my next post. De voering is er ook eentje uit de voorraad en de knoop viste ik uit de #knopendoos. Dat maakt dit project toch wel extra leuk. Ik moet zeggen dat ik nooit eerder een blazer maakte en er een beetje tegenop zag, maar dit patroon van @fridaypatterncompany is erg goed te doen! Ik liet de versteviging van het hele voorpand weg (wel het beleg gedaan) want wilde het niet te stijfjes maken en een meer nonchalante look geven. Another one ticked off my 2023 make 9 list, this is the Heather Blazer! I made it in a lovely lightweight wool blend from The Fabric Store, with a matching rayon lining. I followed the pattern pretty much exactly, though I wish I had interfaced the entire back and the top of the sleeve head as well as the front, I just feel like the soft wool is collapsing a bit in a way that looks a bit sloppy… next time I would definitely consider that, and would also do welt pockets and maybe trim some length off the hem too. I’m just not 100% sure how to wear this now that it’s finished? I’m hoping it’ll be good for office wear, I guess I’ll just need to try it out with some stuff. Heather Blazer Well if you have been following along on my stories you know I have had a wee hyper-fixation on the oversized woollen blazer look. I was approached by @thefineclothcompany to kindly choose something from their oh sew Peru range, and so I picked up this stunning Alpaca and Wool fabric. #ad I wanted it to look at bit more “work” and so found a welt pocket from my tamarack pattern and used the pattern and instructions. Will be doing this on any more Heather blazer patterns now, loved it!! I cannot tell you how happy I am with the result. I have already worn this so much. It’s warm and cozie without being heavy, and I’ve had so many compliments about it too!! Run don’t walk to grab something from their range before the winter chill is upon us. Project 5: Finished my Heather blazer. It was my first go at lining a garment and it did mix me up a bit at the weekend. Bottom didn’t line up and the arms got twisted but I got there with a lot of unpicking 😅. I’d definitely give this blazer a go again but maybe using more of a winter fabric. I chose a finished size m and it seems to be the right amount of oversized on me. I didn’t shorten or lengthen the pattern. I’ve used a label by @little.rosy.cheeks. The neutral lining was from my stash and I did add diy shoulder pads. This was the pattern I was looking forward to most on the #cccss24 course and I definitely learnt a lot while making it. I’ve catching up on photographing everything I’ve made this year so far…. I’ve made quite a few bits! This is the @fridaypatterncompany heather blazer which I’ve made in a lilac linen. The heather blazer has been on my make nine for the last few years and 2024 was the year I finally made it! I actually cut it out in the summer last year and it’s been waiting to be sewed up since. I’ve had visions of a lilac linen blazer for a while! I bought the fabric from @fabricgodmother at the stitch festival last year and the lining is just a plain white lining from @minervadotcom I think this is the last of the fabrics I bought at last years stitch festival to be sewn up which means I can splurge again this year lol! I think I made a size XL with no alterations. You may have noticed I haven’t included pockets, that’s because I didn’t have enough fabric even though I followed the lay plan and had the required amount of fabric. Not quite sure what went wrong there. I enjoyed making this and learnt again how important accuracy is in tailoring! It's another one of those patterns I bought on release but only got around to stitching years later. I was new to sewing when the @fridaypatterncompany Heather Blazer was released: but being described as beginner friendly, I decided to give it a go. So I got a little distracted and tried other, more complicated patterns in the interim, but now that I've made it, I love the ease with which the Heather comes together. It really is suitable for anyone who'd like to try constructing a blazer for the first time. Being oversized, there are minimal fitting issues to think about. What's more, the techniques used in the instructions are so cleverly conceived and explained that you're not likely to get stuck at any point. And even if you do, I'm pretty sure FPC have a tutorial for that (they have such an amazing blog and YouTube). I've used a stretch woven linen from @minervadotcom in a copper shade (I just seem to gravitate to these colours), and this fabric was amazing to work with. I made a size XL with the only adjustment being to shorten the blazer by 2 inches (I'm not quite 5ft1, so, with this being oversized, I didn't want drowned by length). If I was making it again I'd do a narrow shoulder adjustment but, other than that, I am so happy with how this pattern works for me - and, generally speaking, I don't like oversized, boxy patterns. From cutting to finishing, this only took 3 hours, which amazed me! I thought it would have taken a couple of days to sew! I call this my gateway blazer. The Heather blazer is a great place to get your footing for coat making. It’s unstructured, straightforward, with the possibility to stretch your skills and dive into tailoring if you so choose to 🪡 I made it in about 2 1/2 days, before and after work (and on a lunch break one if the days) so it’s a quick see if you’re fairly confident sewist. I took it on a recent work tri @joann_stores and it was the perfect outer layer to dress up or down. My Heather Blazers first outing today. I love the colour but I did almost have to force myself to have a go at wearing it, I think it might be too oversized for me? I maybe need to look at taking it in a bit but I can’t face unpicking the lining at the moment. The fabric is a linen suiting from @spotlightstores which is really lovely and soft. Top is self drafted and pants are heavily modified New Look. Impressed that I’ve managed 100% me mades so far. Although I guess all of my more recent wardrobe additions are things I’ve made so there’s probably some recency bias. After the success of making Lola some joggers and a hoodie out of fleece fabric Ruby requested something out of fleece too She chose this fun and colourful fabric from @sewmesunshine.uk and settled on a blazer as the garment she wanted I looked in my stash for a pattern that might work and decided to try and use the @fridaypatterncompany heather blazer pattern It was a bit of a risk as the pattern calls for woven fabrics but I’m always happy to experiment and try something new I was nervous about how the fabric would behave and press but I needn’t have been worried. It grew slightly when I interfaced the pattern pieces so I just made sure I re-cut those pieces once they were interfaced. It pressed well and didn’t melt with the heat of the iron either I didn’t pattern match when making this blazer as I only had 2 metres of fabric and I didn’t want to waste any of the beautiful fabric either I used black lining fabric I bought from @newcrafthouse ages ago as I wanted the outside of the jacket to shine To finish the jacket off I added a button hole manually using a narrow zig zag stitch and we chose a bright pink button I’ve had in my stash for a while that was given to me by the lovely @sewn_on_the_tyne as part of a gift exchange I know I’m Ruby’s Mum but I think Roo rocks the jacket and looks super cool!
