So it’s #topnine2023 time! 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ This year I made ….. 22 dresses for me (same number as last year - weirdly) 2 dresses for 2 year old toddler twins 3 dresses for our baby granddaughter 2 large holdalls The first montage shows my Top Nine. The next three show everything that I made in 2023. I know that the norm is to choose the nine most liked items on Instagram, but this didn’t really sit well with me. At the beginning of the year about 600 people were following me, but there are nearer 1000 now 🙏. So obviously there will be more ‘likes’. Instead, I have chosen my personal Top Nine. Dresses which are my favourites for many reasons, including the memories held within every thread. It could be the memory of where I bought the fabric, who received the dress, where I wore the dress, or a connection to a special occasion. These are things that nobody else can see, but which mean a lot to me. Without even realising, 5 of these are @fabricgodmother #fgpeony dresses, although I don’t think this is obvious at first glance. Fabrics came from Canada, London, France, Italy and home - #aberystwyth ; all were bought in person apart from the starry fabric from @fabricgodmother and the zebra and rose print from @snapdragonfabrics . Most embellishments are from @aberdashery , but my feather boa trim (sooo much fun) was from @hobbycrafthq . All 29 of these makes have been previously described and posted on Instagram, but this recap is a wonderful self-indulgent reminder of the year’s events. I had a moment of happy pride this morning as I unpacked my me-mades into the wardrobe at our Airbnb. My poor dresses had been squished into my suitcase for three days, so it was good to finally let them breathe. I enjoyed taking a step back and looking at them hanging there. 😃 We’re back in Canada. We were only here last year, and I really hadn’t expected to be back so soon, but plans change. Me Made May Day 7 First week done, it's going quickly! It's still chilly so layers again. The cardigan is the @truebias Marlo. The dress is the Davenport by @fridaypatterncompanypatterns The dress is an old make. I made it just before Christmas a few years ago and I didn't have enough fabric for the ruffle. So I improvised and used a coordiating colour for the shoulder ruffles, belt, skirt tier and yoke. I didn't love it, so I never wore it again (see grid for photo) So, I ordered a small piece of fabric to change the skirt ruffle. This sat on my to do pile for way too long, so this weekend, along with a few other repairs I've got it finished. So yesterday I shared what I made in 2023, so today I’m looking ahead to what I want to make in 2024! Last year I achieved so much more in sewing than I ever thought possible (see my last post!) so this year my focus is less on real tangible goals, and more on slowing down and making fewer, better makes, focusing on fit and honing the skills I developed last year. I also spent last year curating a pretty decent stash, so I want to use that to be more spontaneous this year and not always waiting for the perfect project to use fabric. I’ve seen a lot of people vow not to buy fabric til they have a project for it - I want to do the opposite of that! i had so much fun making this davenport dress.. the gathers. the elastic neck. the elastic sleeves. the sleeve caps. the gathered skirt tier. the burrito yolk. @fridaypatterncompany have found a fan for life! brought from @minervadotcom i made a couple of adjustments based on my wife’s preferences.. bring up the waistline a few cm’s and also slightly tapering the waist in, so that it still functions without the tie. Match-winning outfit incoming 🎾😍 I didn’t take many photos from our magical, bucket-list day at Wimbledon this weekend, but I did get this one — with my outfit in full view! Sitting second row on Court 1 felt surreal. I’ve watched Wimbledon for as long as I can remember, so finally being there in person was incredibly nostalgic, even though I’d never been before. I’m extra proud of this me-made look, especially after a string of sewing fails lately. The encouragement I’ve had here over the past few weeks genuinely lifted my spirits — thank you 💛 It inspired me to revisit a tried-and-true pattern I love wearing, and finally cut into a fabric I’d been hoarding for ages because it felt too beautiful to risk messing up. Fit-wise: 🧵 I used the same size as my previous version, but removed 1cm from the centre front bodice length (blended to nothing at the side seams). 🧵 Swapped out waist ties for an elastic channel — comfier and quicker! 🧵 Shortened the sleeves slightly so all the pattern pieces could just fit on 2m (a real squeeze). 🧵 Only cut 2 of the bottom tier (on the fold) and narrowed them slightly to suit my fabric width. Next time: I’ll tweak the front shoulder facing — it bunches a bit when I move my arms. Apologies that I’ve been quiet for a while but life has just been really hectic of late. Anyway, as I’m sure you’ve heard, we’re having a heatwave in Spain 🇪🇸 at the moment so I decided to run up this little linen skirt yesterday. Hot off the machine last weekend! To make this I took the @fridaypatterncompany #davenportdress and hacked the bodice into a faux wrap (very gathered). I also eliminated the waistband (traded it for an inverted box pleat right at the center line and some elastic on the back waist seam. I also changed the sleeves. Totally love the results. Mods: removed the sleeves and bias bound the armscye to make it sleeveless, lengthened both the main skirt and the a ruffle tier to make it midaxi legnth (as long as I could with the fabric I had), and finally inserted invisible zips in both side seams for my little gal’s access to the breastaurant. #memademay25 #memademay

I just realized today, on the 12th day of the Month, that it is #memademay2025 . It took me 12 days people!!! I have taken a break from garment sewing because 1. I don’t need more clothes 2. I went back to school 3. What you put into your wardrobe is just as important as what you take out. 4. Did I already say I have too many clothes? So I might post some Me Mades this month but you probably already saw them last year, I have nothing new. This is the #davenportdress , pattern from @fridaypatterncompany I made it 2 summers ago I think. I have been participating in #memademay for 5 years or so and this is definitely going to be my weakest showing 😑 but they say it doesn’t have to be new, just something you’ve made yourself. Over the last 5 years, I’ve found it extremely satisfying to curate a wardrobe that feels like me. “Funnest” hobby of my life. I love it so much, the process and the end product.🧨🙌🎈👏🏻

Week three of Me Made May! Started off week 3 with the same illness that took Liam out last week so it was a PJ day but fortunately I have lovely new memade pjs (note this photo was not taken on my sick day!) I absolutely love the @matchymatchysewingclub brunch club set - this was my first pair made out of @minervadotcom cotton sateen. I made a straight size m with no adjustments and the fit is perfect. I used 3 mtrs of fabric. I loved this so much I went on to make a short pair which I got out of 2 meters AND then I made a pair of my friend out of viscose. I have to say - the viscose pair was a bit tricky and it’s not as neat as my cotton pairs. Fortunately my friend is a sewist herself so she knows the craic! When I saw @paigejoannaa on the catwalk at the Knitting and Stitching show wearing this @fridaypatterncompany Davenport hack I knew I had to “recreate” (copy) it! It’s my first time adding a ric rac trim to something and won’t be my last! Where have I been? yep it’s been a while ….. work life has taken over. The 3 years studying is a breeze compared to the actual learning now, my heads full of cannulation, venepuncture, CVAD’s, blood transfusions, chemo regimes, and I come home at night shattered. 👩🏻‍⚕️ I have managed to finish something this week though, I’ve finally jumped on the Davenport train 🚂 I want a dress for the works Xmas party and made this a s a wearable toile. Jumping into February in a new dress! This is my 4th Davenport dress by @fridaypatterncompany and probably won’t be my last! It’s made here in some of the fabric Lauren @guthrieghani had designed for their 10 year anniversary. I’ve loved it since she released it and used their Boxing Day discount to buy some. A slight fault in the fabric led to me cutting the ruffles and waistband in the cream version of the fabric and I loved it! I ended up taking the ruffles off because they just weren’t sitting right. This fabric is stunning, and is beautiful quality. I’d say it’s on par with my favourite ever viscose - rifle paper co. This is the beautiful Davenport Dress by Friday Pattern Company which I made earlier this year, with a lovely silky cotton lawn. I extended the length of the skirt. I can't recall if I added length to the bodice but I should have because I'm a little taller than average. I also need more space in the bust so I'll make that modification next time I make it. I also made a rayon version for my daughter which I believe I have already shared. Hers has much more drape. The pattern quality is exceptional, as with most of these bigger independent designers. Christmas 2022 dress incoming! Time and again I find I turn to @fabricgodmother own fabric when it comes to my “special” makes. It’s fabulous quality and the price isn’t outrageous. After my last @fridaypatterncompany Davenport dress I knew I wanted to use this special fabric for it. The thing about making the same dress twice in a row is that it’s a lot easier and I only needed to refer to the instructions once or twice so it came together very quickly. This fabric was a dream to work with for a fragile fabric. But it is very light weight so care was needed. Second chances… The minute I saw the Davenport dress I loved everything about it. I bought it immediately and waited til I was no longer pregnant to make it. I cut my dress out before Liam was born and it was one of the first things I sewed…for once completely slowing down and enjoying the process and all the little parts… and I was just a bit “meh” about the finished result. I wore it, it was comfortable and well made but I didn’t love it and in my head I wrote off the Davenport as being nice on other people but not on me. Instagram got to me though… I kept seeing the dress again and again (especially on @secret_life_of_a_seamstress and @cath_craft) I had a think about why I didn’t like it too much. I think the first fabric was lovely but it was very dark and dragged me down a bit. It was gorgeous quality viscose that was on the heavy side. And it was a bit too big all over. So… I got lighter weight fabric, brighter fabric, sized down and shortened the skirt part… and I LOVE it!!! This fabric was gifted to me by @minervadotcom, I absolutely love the colours in it! The make took 2.5mtrs. And I’ve worn it loads already! DAVENPORT DRESS 👗 I decided to make another dress from the cotton checkered fabric I purchased during my Italian holidays. It was planned to be my new favorite dress 😂 but to be honest, I am not amazed. The first Davenport dress I made with the fluid drape type of fabric and it worked really well. I made size M (again) and this time I did not extend the sleeves enough. The moderate drape type cotton shows the weak points of this pattern. I don’t like the drawstring as a belt, because it is annoying to spread the fabric evenly on the front and the back each single time putting the dress on🥵The front neckline gathered with the elastic is still very pretty so that’s a plus. The fabrics don’t fall straight down which makes the excess of the fabric at the back of sleeve more visible. It’s something I had not noticed before. The finish of the dress is beautifully designed (last photo). I made this bright red @fridaypatterncompany Davenport Dress in December but I swear it wasn’t intended to be a Mrs Klaus dress 🤶 I was inspired by the @claryandpeg Phoebe dress and thought I could get a similar look with the Davenport Dress pattern but after making it, realised I should have hacked the pattern to use the front and back pieces of a blouse pattern. FLOWERS 🌺 Since it worked so well with #hughesdress , I wanted to check out another pattern from @fridaypatterncompany . After seeing the beautiful #davenportdress as a top at the @nillysews profile, I decided to choose this pattern and make it too. Thanks to useful comment from Paula, I made a size M and extended the sleeves by 5 cm. The sewing instructions are really good, but I still struggled with the front and back yoke pieces and I needed to use a sew along video. The fabric I bought in May from @bemax_fabrics . started making the #fridaypatterncompany Davenport dress and its such a satisfying make! there are some nice construction details which have had me scratching my head at times, but the pattern is written so well i couldn’t go wrong! my recent makes have been quick simple sews so it was nice to sink my teeth into something a bit more complex. the fabric is lovely to work with, it irons really well and is beautiful quality, thank you #likesewamazing for stocking such beautiful fabrics!!! #fridaypatterncompanydavenportdress #manchestersews

These beautiful dresses are all based on The Friday Company Davenport Dress pattern. Black with red heart viscose crepe was made with the stock pattern size 18. It is true to size and it a little big for me (happy days) included the flounce on the sleeves as well as the bottom skirt frill. Am no fan of a bottom skirt frill as it often doesn’t suit my frame! But I am also not known for sewing stock - I wanted to try the whole kit and caboodle this time. Next up I decided that this pattern would make a good maxi dress…. Who doesn’t love a maxi especially heading in to spring! Denim jackets, tights and boots! So I cracked on with 2 dresses, …. I have this thing ‘why make 1 when you can make 2 …..’ I absolutely love how the bodice comes together- almost feels like a touch of magic. Alterations- this time I used the size 16, heightened the waistline altering the bodice making it 1 inch shorter (turns out that wasn’t enough for the serpent dress and ended up taking another 1 1/2 “ off). Also I lengthened the skirt by 23 inches. The vintage (Petula summer 2021) floral dress turned out (even if I say so myself blinking awesome …. I love it). Came out first time absolutely spot on. However the serpentine fabric (viscose sateen) sewn the same as the vintage floral just didn’t work. I thought needed lining top and bottom …. Its just a little seethru. So after sewing it all together I then had to unpick …. A lot ! I left the top lined. It also just didn’t work with the length, 3 alterations later but it’s no longer maxi more knee length …. It’s still gonna look fab with thick tights and boots! Isn’t it strange…… With hindsight I think I would if I made it again used the dragon as the central focal point …. I love seeing how the same patterns can look so different depending on the fabric and some pretty small tweaks! Also look like a fxxxing leprechaun in my last pics …. My first Davenport ❤ So back when I was going into the office regularly I decided I needed more work dresses. By the time I finished this one we had gone into lockdown so I suspect this one will have to make its debut there next year! This was a fun sew. It taught me a couple of new tricks and the sewalong was great to get you through the tricky parts. The back is a little baggy in comparison to the front so I might play with that a little next time to get a better fit. This dress is so comfortable, there will definitely be more in my future! My @fridaypatterncompany #DavenportDress is complete! And you know what...I’m not sure if I like it? 😅 This project was a collaboration with @lushcloth who provided free fabric and I have to say I adore the fabric! But it’s also appropriate that it’s a collaboration with Oyin because we had an incredibly honest chat about how you won’t love everything you make and I will be blogging about what you can do if you aren’t a fan of your latest make. Let me start by saying that the Davenport has a huge amount of positive ease built in so although my measurements are a medium I made a size small and actually I wish I had made an extra small because the chief thing I’m not a fan of is the size. I feel like I’m drowning in this dress and everything is just too big and bulky. I love the pattern and the design so it is just the size that’s not quite right. however I’m not giving up as I love the pattern so the plan is: - take some width from the side seams - remove some of the fullness from the sleeves - remove an inch from the bottom of the mid skirt - shrink the shoulder frills Although the pattern suggests using cotton lawn and poplin (as I’ve used here), next time I’m going to use a viscose or viscose linen mix as I think that would help a lot to reduce the bulk. I wanted to share this with you to normalise that it’s not not to love everything you make! How many @fridaypatterncompany #davenportdress is too many?! I bought this fab 1.5m piece of Lady McElroy fabric @thestitchfestival in March with a view to making a top! Fast forward 2 months and it still hadn't been made up. I wanted to go with something "tried and tested" but couldn't decide. I then had an overwhelming desire to make another Davenport but with so little fabric, I played an insane game of Tetris to eek out every last piece....! 🎮 This is a size XS which is a considerable size down but it comes up very oversized and fabric hungry otherwise. 🎮 This is the no frills version... Literally! I didn't have enough fabric for sleeve frills or the skirt frill! 🎮 Look at older versions for exact details but I think I lengthen the sleeves and bodice by 2 inches each but I would need to check that! I think that this is my 7th Davenport and I think it is actually my favourite! The fabric is amazing and the hacks make it very simple which is good with a busy fabric!!! Hot off the machine and straight on the grid, am I a changed person? This is the Friday Pattern Company Davenport dress size medium graded to a large at the hips. I’ve changed the drawstring to elastic and used the TATB Lotta instructions to create the channel. I had 2.5 meters of this viscose (I think) from @thefabricboutiqueuk and I squeeeeezed it out of every millimetre, meaning my sleeves are 3/4 length and the facings for the pocket and yoke are in a contrast pink fabric. This pattern will make the perfect throw on work dress, it’s so comfy. Finished my @fridaypatterncompany Davenport dress I started on Saturday at @bathsews 5th birthday sewing day. The fabric is a @ladymcelroyfabrics viscose crepe called Polished pebbles - I absolutely love so the colours in it. It’s a Davenport Day…featuring Ronnie the dog 🐕 💫@fridaypatterncompany Davenport Dress 💫 So many pieces to cut out but well worth it! A dress with pockets is always a win for me and I really like this for a casual day dress. 💫 The fabric is a pink tartan giving Cher from Clueless vibes and does not crease at all! What time is it? Davenport time! (Finally!🤭) A few weeks ago I used this orange twill from @1stforfabrics to make a very seasonal @fridaypatterncompany Davenport dress 🎃 I shared a lot of the process on stories but didn’t get any pictures - until now! - so here are my thoughts on it… Looking at the finished measurements, I decided to make an XS and this was definitely the right call. The only mod I made was to further slim down the raglan sleeve by 3” at the wrist, tapering in to the underarm join - I felt like the sleeves would otherwise have been too baggy on me (despite the elastic wrist.) Fabric wise, I used 2.5m x 1.5m and only had a little bit left over for the scraps box - will be nice pockets for another project! Overall this dress has some cute details like the waist tie and front pockets, but I’m just not sure this one’s for me sadly - just not my style despite the perfect colour palette 🎃 P.S. I'm finally contributing to #memademay 😁 I'm always so late with this 😂 I finished my first #davenportdress last night just in time to wear it for a 90th birthday party today, and here it is in all its gingham glory. I used quite a heavy cotton from @heysewsister.co.uk and it could perhaps have done with something lighter to create more drape and less bulk, but it still works. I’m on a bit of a roll finishing items at the moment, which is a nice place to be! This is the @fridaypatterncompany Davenport Dress, in a viscose from @blackbirdfabrics. It’s a bit of a departure for me, style-wise, but I made it to be a work dress and I think it’ll fill a hole there for me! I really love the print, and the high, elastic neckline of the Davenport makes it super comfortable and easy to wear. I am annoyed that I’ve pulled the drawstring off centre front when I was tying it in a bow in all these pictures, I might go back and replace it with elastic with a faux-bow so that I don’t need to fiddle with it so often! 💙 💙💙 all the feels for this fabric and my little helper! 🐶🖤🤎😍 Yes, it’s curtain fabric, but it is vintage, pristine and was screaming at me! 🤭🤣🤣 @fridaypatterncompany #davenportdresshack 🥰 Third time making this pattern which is absolutely fool proof and a delight to make! I’ve omitted the flutter and I’ve ‘slashed and spread’ a shortened sleeve to give me a puff at the shoulder instead. Length is +2” on the main skirt and then the ruffle as per pattern. At the waist I add elastic and stitch in the ditch at the side seams, before stitching a shortened tie onto the elastic ends at the front! I made this bright red @fridaypatterncompany Davenport Dress in December but I swear it wasn’t intended to be a Mrs Klaus dress 🤶 I was inspired by the @claryandpeg Phoebe dress and thought I could get a similar look with the Davenport Dress pattern but after making it, realised I should have hacked the pattern to use the front and back pieces of a blouse pattern. It’s no joke to say the minute I saw the @fridaypatterncompany Davenport dress it was on my list. And then I saw the amazing version Sally @secret_life_of_a_seamstress made and it jumped right to the top of my post pregnancy wishlist. I cut this out before Liam was born - a genius move as there’s no way I would have been able to since, there’s so many different parts it takes ages. I took a chance and cut a size medium. I’m currently a U.K. 12-14 and would say the medium is a good fit. I had this fabric in my stash from @sewsewsewuk - but only 2.5mtrs so it was a tight squeeze to get this all cut out. The making process for this was absolutely lovely. It was so nice to slow down and do a couple of steps here and there when I had 20mins. There were a few head scratching moments but I just needed to really read the instructions instead of just scanning them. The finish of the dress is so nice with the back and side yokes. I love the pockets and the length of it. I didn’t have enough fabric to cut a cord so I just used plain black and I think it’s lovely. I’m already planning to start another at the next sewing day I get.
