I took a bit of a break from sewing over Christmas and into the new year, mostly as I was away from home (and my sewing machine) a lot! But I have been thinking about my sewing goals for this year… ⭐️ I really want to focus on upskilling on garment making and learning how to do things better and more accurately, as well as new skills! I am SO excited to share these photos of @scrooppatterns latest release, the Seatoun Skirt! I tested the pattern in a straight size 40, no mods beyond raising the pocket placement and using the skirt itself as a hem rather than the instructed bias facing (i shortened it 3" to suit my height, so it worked!), in an absolutely delicious dark olive green wool gabardine. I am wearing the full accountrement of mid-late teens layers - chemise, corset, petticoat and corset cover. It’s really fun to be married to me 👯 Eli and Eric were banished to the couch during dinner before @jesslovesthreads and Eric’s wedding, where they obviously talked about being married to women who sew. It was there that Eli told Eric I’d never made him anything and Eric asked what I was doing. So, not to be outdone, I made Eli a shirt for his birthday and then made myself a matching shirt because I’m very chill all of the time. Eli got a straight size, mostly because I am lazy and didn’t want to make adjustments but he has a straight size body so it all worked out. I graded sizes on the patina because I convinced myself this shirt would not have enough ease with my pump on my hip after my wearable toile but now I think I was wrong because this is pretty big. Which I generally like but I pictured this tucked into pants and skirts at work and I’m not so sure that’s the look anymore. Body dysmorphia strikes again, you bastard. How is Me Made May going for you? Zoe @sozoblog started it as a wardrobe challenge to get more wear out of her memades...new combinations, repairs, alterations, or spotting a gap. We are sharing how some in our community are responding to the challenge, and what they have learned....so far. . 1. @velvetmango_sews took in the side seams and shortened the hem of her #fendress @fancytigercrafts . Now she loves it. 2. @sepatterns has been rooting through her 70s wardrobe, which had been stored in her attic. Trying on and wearing each piece has helped her to make decisions. She has found new ways to wear this top. The skirt will become fabric for another garment (it's Liberty Tana Lawn!) 3. @adymadie mentioned that her #yorkpinafore @helens__closet was too short. It was suggested she could wear it over jeans...and here she is... jumping for joy. 4. @frau_crafteln was unsure about joining in Me Made May but after listening to @checkyourthread podcast and then discovering the #memademayfat hashtag she is definitely in. 5. @quantumsewist made a #MeMadeMay22 pledge to make an office outfit from thrifted sources and here it is. A #patinablouse @fridaypatterncompany made from a refashioned men's shirt. 6. @an_upcycled_life pledge has helped her find a new way to wear this #V9315 top. It was impractical as it was too low at the neck, too short in length, and the bow was fiddly. It's definitely a keeper worn this way. 7. @2ducks_swimming discovered she doesn't have to wear 'walking clothes' to go her daily walk as long as she wears trainers. She is assessing her wardrobe piece by piece. 8. @sosewshaw . Day 12 brought a 3rd alteration. Her #florenceskirt by @sizemesewing was too big. She has now taken it in at the waist and is road testing it. 9. @pkaysews is playing Pros and Cons with each piece in her wardrobe. It's proving a really excellent informative learning process. 10. @heathmaggy is wearing a five year old dress. It has reminded her that this is a favourite bodice shape for her and means another dress from the back of the wardrobe will now be repurposed. . Continued in comments.... JR🌳

Dag 4 i #symånadmedtygverket23 från @tygverket och dagens tema är arbetskläder. Here goes my new years craft plans, again my focus is to use up things I already have and try to tame all the over flowing bins. I’ve also been thinking more about the sustainability surrounding crafting and want to keep that in mind as I move forward. #makenine2024 : 1. 4 pairs of socks knit from stash yarn. 2. My Girl Friday sweater, heathered berry ultra alpaca. I made this sweater 12 years ago and it’s still a favourite. 3. Burgundy Quince and Co yarn to sweater, not sure which sweater but I’m thinking a pullover with some cables. 4. A quilt for our bed at the cabin, maybe the #meadowlandquilt again? 5. A secret quilt project 🤫 6. My Blair Skirt is finished! I haven’t got any proper cute pictures of it yet but I’ve thrown in some quick pictures at the end. I’ve found that this skirts sits above my hip on my low waist. It’s not high waisted. If I wanted it high waisted I’d have to grade down further or refit the skirt. I haven’t worn anything that sits this low in years so it will take a moment for me to get used to it. In terms of the sewing, the only thing I did differently was to sew the front side of the button plackets first, and then stitch the back sides of them. I did the same for the waistband, sewing the main side first and then sewing the lining by doing a “stitch in the ditch.” I found it easier and neater to do it that way. The fabric was really easy to sew. It’s not very thick so my machine happily sewed through all of the layers. I used the Dusky Pink corduroy from @sistermintaka In terms of styling, I don’t have anything to go with it yet. I want this to be more of a hot skirt than a cute skirt. I’m picturing it with some soft silk tops. I’ve tried it with a few things from my wardrobe so I can get a sense of what shapes work best. I feel like an adorable dork when I wear it with a cotton lawn Gilbert top. It’s cute but it’s not the look I’m going for. The Camille Top (with the bows) doesn’t look great in the cotton lawn, as it sticks out too much. I do like the low neckline though. Maybe I could try it in a silk fabric with some elastic in the sleeves and slightly lengthening the bodice so I could tuck it in. The third style would be something low and more fitted, like the #SaguaroSet top, or something similar. I’d love some suggestions! The last picture is it just with a T-shirt. I was wearing that under my jumper today. It wasn’t a style choice, but I just wanted to post that, because you can see the finished belt on that picture! Please send me your favourite top patterns. One thing I’ve really loved about leaning into vintage style is how it breathes new life into some older pieces in my wardrobe.   I’ve been decidedly “meh” about this skirt since I made it a couple of years ago—something about the fabric + length read “90s evangelical” to me, which is very much *not* my jam.   But paired with this striped Patina Blouse and my favorite hat, it gives a general feeling of “Agatha Christie on an archeological dig.” It’s not my most period-accurate outfit (best I can tell, bottom front A-line skirts like this were a ‘70s thing). Today was the celebration for my favorite fabric store: @harmonyprovo. I love visiting this place to see all the fabrics and treasures they have, but the people there are even better! Last night my niece and I made some floral cakes and I attempted some pansy flowers because Harmony’s logo is a pansy. It didn’t totally turn out but we kept going! 💐🤣 Then we headed down to the fashion show where my nieces and my sons helped me share some of my favorite “made with harmony” things I’ve made this year. New Release || Tester @megannielsenpatterns have released the Kelly Skirt and it’s available in sizes 0-34 (0-20 & 14-34) and goes up to 52”/132cm waist and 62”/157cm hips (body measurements). Today is my birthday! And as has been tradition for the past few years, I made myself a birthday dress! Well, technically two dresses, both in fabrics from @wearethefabricstore - a #saltwaterslip in black silk twill, and a #mnsudley x #patinablouse mash-up in the most delightful black sheer check silk!   The slip dress is size XS blended to S at the hip, hemmed to mini-length. The main dress is mostly the Sudley dress in size 0, but I modified the sleeve to incorporate the design of the Patina blouse sleeve with the buttoned cuff. The main dress has some sweet little details: I love the ties at the back neck; the cuffs are stiffened with hand-basted black silk organza instead of iron-on interfacing, and feature cute flower-shaped shell buttons which I bought at the Oedo Antique Market in Tokyo last year; and I did a combo of French and bound seams throughout for an extra-neat finish. Making both pieces out of silk was a bit of a risk and I had to be super careful when cutting and sewing, but it absolutely paid off, as both dresses feel so luxurious and delightful to wear. As with any project there are small details on each dress that could have been better, but I also know that I'm the only one who will notice these little imperfections, and that they just exemplify the fact that I made this whole outfit myself! I had such a lovely time sewing these pieces, too - sewing is such a relaxing hobby for me, and after a very busy and stressful past couple of months, it felt restorative to spend a few days fully immersed in the act of creating something special just for me. This whole outfit feels so very 'me' - it's comfortable but still a little bit fancy, has some nice swish and movement when I walk, features beautiful little details, and is made in my favourite colour and fibre to wear. I'm so excited to wear it today for my birthday celebrations, and I'm looking forward to wearing it many more times in the years to come! Back in February I came across this pattern when Sew Over It had a week of one day sales on different things. My first thought was #patinablouse as I’ve been admiring its V-neck collar. So when the Susie Blouse popped up with the same detail at a fraction of the cost, despite banning myself from buying patterns, I had to get it. Straight away I thought of how to hack this to create a faux placket, but I decided to make it as it comes first so I could practice the collar. I made a plain-ish version in a lilac shirting from Woolcrest that has a very subtle sparkle that annoyingly doesn’t really show on camera but gives it a whole extra dimension ✨The fabulous cloud buttons are from @ethelandjoan and the neckline is the perfect shape to showcase my new ridiculous/adorable Roy necklace, a birthday gift from my besties ❤️🐾 The reason I didn’t make this gorgeous pattern sooner is my bad luck with/phobia of buttonholes, but I recently got a new gadget that is a real game-changer! Swipe to the end to meet the vintage Singer buttonholer. You can attach it to most modern machines as a foot and it moves the fabric around to create the buttonholes. This two piece set was completed just in time for my vacation to Dever, Colorado. I had to fit in a visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens. After months of having this @fridaypatterncompany #patinablouse hanging up just needing buttons, today I decided to crop it and use the excess to make ties, instead. . I stand by my belief that the majority of these blouses have diagonal drag lines down the front due to the strange dart placement. On a striped fabric this was made much more obvious, so I added the ties to keep the front hanging as well as it can. . I really do need to redraft the collar to add to a bodice that fits me better. . Fabric is @riflepaperco wildflower/meadow from a shop that has since closed down…it has been in my stash for 2.5 years!!

Here’s my new #patinablouse. I felt like a million dollars wearing it yesterday. I’ve been making a sloper for what feels like forever (I have discalculia so the first few attempts were, in hindsight, quite comedic in how wildly inaccurate they were/looked!). All the work paid off though because I used my sloper for the first time and it made any pattern adjustments SO much easier to see. Making adjustments is usually a little bit of a headache for me, but no longer! After working on the sloper for so long I wanted something quick and easy to make. This blouse has a nice amount of ease which made it a winner. Those beautiful buttons by @lisetailor 🪡 the final photo is of my cat in her favourite place 😄 The ironing tool is the Flex Hammer by @jenerates. She has some amazing inventions for sewing in her shop!

New finished project! I found this piece of flowery fabric in the remnant bin at Rokko Sarees and Fabric, when i was shopping for my lengha. I first thought i might make the Louise blouse by @maeli.paris, bought the pattern and printed it all out, only to realize i didn't have nearly enough fabric (only had about 1.5 meters i think, with a laize of 120cm), so i had to find a plan B. I spent quite a bit of time looking at all the options available online - not gonna lie, it gets a bit overwhelming sometimes 😅. Eventually i landed on the #patinablouse by @fridaypatterncompany . I went with the lower neckline option and took out a lot of sleeve volume, both because i didn't want it but also so that it would fit in my small piece of fabric. The blouse came together super quickly. After i first basted it together, i decided to remove some width on the collar (about 2cm), and i also removed the bust dart completely, along with trimming a bit the side seams for a better fit. The sleeves hem were cut on the selvedge so i didn't have to finish them, and just decided to roll them up when i first wore it. For the buttons i used some from my stash. They were gifted to me a long time ago by a former coworker, Amelie, and they were made by her grandmother (in a factory). This blouse definitely feels very retro and something my own grandmother might have worn in her day.

Freeing my arms in a new make 💘 . I don’t know if this resonates with anyone but for some time now I’ve actively avoided wearing anything that would leave my very upper arms and shoulders exposed. Somewhere along the way I guess I decided that I didn’t like how they looked. But I came to a realisation recently that not once in my life have I ever looked at someone else’s upper arms and thought ‘YIKES, you really should add some sleeves to that top!’ So why should I hold on to those negative feelings towards my own body?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I fixed it by making a pretty sleeveless blouse 🥰 . I realised too late that I most definitely needed a full bust adjustment as that kind of fit issue is far more obvious when you’re not adding sleeves 🤦🏻‍♀️ So I bodged it with some extra darts which is good enough for me. I used the lower neckline bodice front and I added some ricrac to the collar. We’re having a delightfully early bout of Fake Fall which means that I actually *wore* my latest finished object IN AUGUST 🤯 This is #madesoquickly from @susancrawfordvintage, available in her book A Stitch In Time Vol. 1. The original pattern is from 1936 and so, of course, is right in my style wheelhouse. This one lived up to its name- it took 13 days from start to finish and I enjoyed every minute of it. There’s something magical when a pattern and yarn are the perfect match, and I didn’t want to put this one down. The yarn is @whyknotfibers Eddy on her Slack Base (merino/silk/yak), and it was an absolute joy to work with AND THE COLOR! THE COLOR! I love these deep deep jewel tones and they’re not what I excel at as a dyer, so I’m so glad that Kat has my back. I did knit this at a tighter gauge than the pattern is written for and according to my own measurements and preferences (details are on my Ravelry project page), and the fit is exactly what I wanted. I did a three needle bind off at the shoulders and seamed the rest (it was totally fine!) Buttons are vintage Czech glass. Skirt is the 1920 Yoked Skirt from @beespokevintage, blouse is the #patinablouse, shoes are from @juliabobrogues, necklace was a birthday gift from @seriously_yall sometime in our early 20s and I STILL ADORE IT. The only change in the design I made was a pleat instead of gathering at the back (IYKYK). I went for size L but I may try to go size down next time as it's pretty loose. Me Made May | Day 22  Today I wore my much loved @fridaypatterncompany patina blouse in a fabulous bright cotton deadstock fabric I bought secondhand from @juliemaeseele's studio sale. I made this ages ago and never got around to posting it! This is the deeper neckline view in a size L with pearl snaps at the cuffs and placket. I added some bias binding to the slant at the tip of this collar that I would love to pretend it was a design choice but I straight up didn't notice I missed it until I was too far in. I bought this pattern on a sun lounger back in July (take me back!) It’s not a pattern I would normally go for but I kept seeing really lovely versions, especially @sewconfidentjenny ‘s Liberty Patina’s so I bought it in the summer sale. I then spent months nearly buying fabric I knew would look great but that I’d realistically never wear until I saw this Astoria viscose twill by Fabric Godmother. It’s beautiful - the colours are amazing! The twill weave softens the colours just a little so it’s not too bold. I don’t know how much wear I’ll get out of it as it’s more a top I’d wear to go for drinks, but I should push myself to wear nicer clothes day to day. Don’t you think this fabric would look stunning as a Deer and Doe Magnolia dress or a Friday Patten Company Saltwater Slip?! Pretty Patina: I loved the fabric that I used for my Lotta dress last week, so I decided to cut a #fridaypatterncompanypatinablouse with the remnants. I’m really pleased with how this blouse has turned out. I added some self-cover buttons from Hemline. First time doing those. Fiddly, but worth it. I think the fabric and the buttons give it a real 1940s vibe. The viscose fabric came in my ‘Sewing Bee’ challenge box from @dreamfabricsuk for week 1 of the challenge. Week 2 is already underway! Label - bundle from Amazon ages ago. I’d like to enter this blouse into the #sewbloodpressure25 challenge as I’m dying to wear it! The challenge is being run by @beesilva.creates Money is also being raised for charity. Ive also been meaning to make up another patina blouse for a while. It’s quite different to my other two @fridaypatterncompany I made no alternations, and this is the standard neckline.

Had to share this WIP one on the grid because it’s just too good. Unfortunately because of the busy pattern and dark background a lot of the details are lost. I saw @chels_makes_ post a video wearing a #PatinaBlouse in corduroy and I was inspired! It’s the perfect design for a cropped jacket! I had some of this beautiful denim fabric from @fabricgodmother and I knew it would be perfect. I made a few tweaks, including getting rid of the darts, widening the front facing and adding a waistband. It’s still not finished, I want to add pockets but I’m debating whether to add ruffle patch pockets or just normal patch pockets (although everything needs a ruffle right?). I also need to add buttons, but I want jeans style buttons so waiting for a trip to the shop. I also sized up as I wasn’t sure how the fit would be with bulkier fabric. #srtl2024 One of my favourite challenges on instagram is this one run by @sosewdressmaking and @jenlegg_teescreatives I find going through the hashtag so inspiring. As always I overshot with two plans but only made one (listen, it’s not my fault Tilly came out with a new pattern and fabric godmother a dreamy collection!) This is my recreation of the Brora London shirt at the end. I don’t think I suit pale pink so I went for this bolder crepe from @rainbowfabrickilburn and I made the sleeves full length so I guess this is in the best interpretation category. I used the @fridaypatterncompany patina blouse. I have actually made this before but promptly donated it. I made the short sleeved version in a medium and it just looked oversized which didn’t go with the vibe of the collar. I’ve sized down here and made the long sleeved version and u love it. So it’s good to go back to patterns! I added a ruffle to the collar and the first time I turned the collar out I thought “I can do better than that” and unpicked and re sewed, and well… each time just got progressively worse. I forgot to add in my reel yesterday about my red and white gingham #patinablouse by @fridaypatterncompany that I added side splits! I might wear this one loose, or partly tucked in, so added 5” splits in the side seams. Apart from that, I made the sleeves a couple of inches shorter and repositioned the buttonholes to suit me that was it! I opted for the lower neckline and love the shape of the #chelsea collar. The shoulder seam width and and fit across the back of the shoulders to have really good proportions as well. The fabric is 100% cotton gingham. I’ve also got the same fabric in a smaller black and white gingham, so prewashed them together and there was no colour running or apparent shrinkage. STRAWBERRY PICNIC PATINA 🍓 The @fridaypatterncompany #patinablouse is by far my most-sewn pattern, and I knew I wanted to make a short sleeved pink gingham version for the summer. When I came across these SUPER ADORABLE strawberry buttons in a local craft shop I knew they would be the perfect finishing touch 🤩🍓 I made two small changes to the pattern - I added a ruffle to the collar and cuffs to the short sleeves (I also lengthened the short sleeves slightly from that in the pattern itself). Fabric is yarn dyed gingham 100% cotton from @fabricgodmother 💕

I'm late to the 'patina' perhaps but this is the first @fridaypatterncompany pattern I've used and I'm a big fan! This #fridaypatterncompanypatinablouse is in size L with no adjustments. Cut with the standard neckline and long sleeves. Fabric from @justsewpenrith is a Swiss Dot in 100% cotton and is lovely and light but crisp. My favourite part of this pattern is how nicely and neatly the drafting allows the cuffs and facings to be attached. Sometimes you you just need a white shirt or blouse to go with everything, so here’s my third version of the Patina Blouse, sewing pattern by @fridaypatterncompany This one has the higher version of the v-neckline (which I prefer on me) and the long sleeves and cuffs. Finished photos of my 2nd gingham Patina Blouse, sewing pattern by @fridaypatterncompany The sleeve head and shoulder fit is so nice on this pattern and I’ve tried to capture it in the photos. With this one I also added a full bust adjustment, but comparing the two blouses together, I’d have got away without doing it. I cut the pattern for the lower neckline again, but raised it at the front by an inch, as that was a better neck depth for me. The fabric was the same brand off 100% cotton gingham from @trurofabrics and nice to sew with and comfortable to wear It’s a great pattern and I want to make a third already, but for the winter with long sleeves. This is my fourth Patina blouse! I think it’s safe to say I love this pattern! I’ve decided to add some pretty trim to the collar to prevent it getting lost in the busy, floral print. The fabric is a beautiful, lightweight cotton sateen kindly gifted by @minervadotcom in return for a post about it. I can honestly say this is one of the nicest (and easiest) fabrics to work with and there are some beautiful spring/summer prints available. This one is ‘wildflower fusion’ and Minerva labels happen to be a perfect match! Long sleeve Patina blouse & Bibi skirt: Earlier today, I finished sewing the button tabs on to the #tillyandthebuttonsbibi skirt. I made it using remnants of navy ponte roma from #poundfabrics and two gold nautical style buttons from my #secondhand stash. I made the skirt last weekend but forgot the tabs needed to be finished at the same time as the waistband. I just unpicked the seam and sewed in the ditch 😅. It’s now hemmed and has a label in from #sewconfident Helena, the dress form, is wearing it with the long sleeve #fridaypatterncompanypatinablouse I made as part of the #sewconfidentccc23 course. The fabric is a floral cotton poplin that came as part of my kit. I love it and have worn it a number of times. Label from @paigejoannaa on #etsy The Bibi skirt was a quick make and easy to whiz off mostly using the overlocker. I opted to go between two sizes and then overlock the excess off. It’s a great little skirt and fits well. The pattern is from the #stretchsewingbook The long sleeve patina was trickier to make than the short version, but I was guided through the process on the course by Jenny. If I made this version again, I’d add another couple of inches to the sleeves as it’s a pinch short. A better picture of my Patina blouse 👚 I was unbothered but this pattern when it was first released, I didn’t like the collar as I’m not a huge collar fan, sleeves yes, I’m a sucker for a good old puffy sleeve but collars no 👎 Anyway there was a little bit of Patina frenzy on here that piqued my interest and a couple of my sewing friends from @thestaffordshiresewcial were making it and their results were turning out lovely so I gave in to the pattern fomo 😅 and I’m so glad I did it’s gorgeous. I’ve had some navy cord in my stash (amongst many other things 😬)for a while now waiting for a home. I saw a cute navy cord pinafore dress on a nobody’s child ad and thought it seemed like a good project for a self draft. I think it turned out ok (swipe for inspo pic). It was a straightforward sew, all the shaping is in the side seams (no darts) so no closures needed either. I think it’s worked out ok though I always get caught out a little with lower necklines because the front then wants to sit a bit further out on the shoulder, I’m sure the inspo does this too and they’ve just adjusted it for the pic though. The fabric is 8 wale cotton corduroy I bought from Ainsberry fabrics ages ago. It’s lined with an Egyptian cotton bed sheet which I thought was too nice to solely cut up for toiles. There are two pockets on the front. The shirt is the #fridaypatterncompany #fridaypatterncompanypatinablouse shared previously. The boots are from Bobbies, I bought them in the sale after dreaming of them for about 4 months.
