Jessica always has great instructions, making it a pleasure to use her patterns. I'll be making the full length trouser hopefully before my trip in September. In a knit from @joann_stores and the hacked #PEallinshirt (I straightened the hem and side seams to make it more campy)by @patternemporium_kate . Fabric was an impulse buy from an eBay seller it's a double guaze. Next, my second pair of #easaturdayshorts by @endersallsews these are great shorts with lots of hack possibilities. I'll be making these again as a hiking shorts hack alla @madeby_francesca. I made these in a slightly stretchy denim from @joann_stores, inspired by a recent post of Alyx's own denim Saturday shorts. The top is the second #sommarcamisole from @paridisepatterns in an ivory/navy strip Ponte from @minervadotcom Next up was a quick sew from @peppermintmagazine, a wrap skirt inspired by @leila.makes post made in a fabulous soft washed linen from @blackbirdfabrics I made the sage #donnyshirt by @fridaypatterncompany when it first came out and finally made it into a comfortable summer set with the #easaturdayshorts. It’s no secret I’ve got a thing for bias skirts at the moment. After making multiple elastic waist versions, I decided to try one with a waistband & invisible zip for a change, enter the Lulee Skirt. The shape is a bit different to the Clo Bias Skirt, straighter through the sides and fuller & flutier around the hem. On my body, I think I prefer the gentle A line shape of the Clo & I cut it a bit shorter than my usual length 🙈 which might be why I’m a bit ‘meh’ The past year has been the year of the skirt for me, I like being able to add a different top for a whole new look, gives me more options than a dress. Merchant and Mills linen x Donny shirt hack is a dreamy combo. Checkered fabric is meant for playing with fabric direction. The hacks are pocket from #s9465, addition of sleeve cuffs cut on the bias and back yoke cut on the bias. ✂️The seams including armholes are French seamed. The yoke is totally burritoed, including the shoulder seam. 🪡I had problems deciding on the pocket position. The bias had a lot of stretch in the linen, so was tricky. I covered up one of the dark blue checks with the pocket. Checks are fun but like circles or large flowers can look funny in the wrong place. A lack of symmetry can also be off putting so cutting out was done as a single layer so I could see what the finished result would look like. My pants were the result of a mistake- the denim was too heavy weight for the pattern but as pants they perfectly keep their wide-leg pant shape, helped along with the 4 inch deep faced hem. #memademay2024 day 31! Finished this modified version of the Vogue #v1994 very late yesterday night. Changes: - took out 5 cm each of the front and back crotch curve and graded in the inseam accordingly. The crotch is still very low, so I might shorten the rise as well -changed the exposed zip to an invisible one by removing the small 0.5 cm SA extension at the front crotch. Then instead of the zipper shield I added a facing all around the neckline and zipper front that I topstitched (inspired by the @fridaypatterncompany #donnyshirt ) - removed the front pocket/midriff and replaced it with a slant pocket to avoid the horizontal line across my hips - sewed the front bodice/waist pleats as darts. Also increased the waist dart intake by 1 cm that I consequently added to the side seam for more shaping - added back patch pockets and 5 belt loops instead of just one Materials: - fabric: @der.buntspecht.shop linen/viscose blend - zipper, belt buckle: @oudshoornshop - label: @kattun_stoffe Made in may 2024. Participaing in #memademay was an interesting challenge. (Somewhat) daily posting is stressful and will not continue.

My contribution to #ReFebulous2025 hosted by @MadeByLiesl is a coord set made out of a partial duvet cover. I thrifted two pieces each 1.45 m long and 2.25 m wide with a border on each short end. That gave me a total of 5.8 m of border but ended up with only 20 cm left at the end. The shirt is the #DonnyShirt by @FridayPatternCompany and the pants are #VoguePatterns #V1706. I've used both these patterns before, they have great drafting and intructions. My only significant change is to move the pants zip from CB to the side. BALI 🏝️ It took Patti & Niko over a DECADE to finally tie the knot & while I was growing impatient it sure was worth the wait 😘 While in Bali we spent a few days each in Uluwatu, Ungasen and Ubud. Took my first surf lesson & can’t wait to surf again (when my big toe is less angry 🥴). Learned all about indigo dyeing and tried our hand at it at @threadsoflifebali, ate lots of good food (& didn’t get sick!), & saw some very cool wildlife! We were hoping to take a Batik class, but couldn’t fit it in so we bought supplies & will try our hand at it at home! I wasn’t able to go fabric shopping in Denpasar, so no recs for that! Not gonna pretend Bali is my *vibe* but we tried to make the most out of it & here are some pics! I had lots of overlap with Japan outfits, although I did send some things home with my brother before traveling to Bali since not everything was going to be applicable. I also wore a few dresses that I realize I don’t have pictures of but were life savers for beach days. For the wedding, the fabric I ordered two months in advance never arrived so I rummaged through my stash and made a #CheriTop and #PeppermintWrapSkirt out of a wonderful @linenlab.co.uk linen. Kevin has become *accustomed* to matching shirts and gave me a hard time for not making him a matching top. That said, he wore a #M6044 top in washed linen and #JutlandPants which matched well enough. Yet another @fridaypatterncompany #donnyshirt . I like the process of making this top and this time it's made in a @merchantandmills Textured Check Natural Indian Cotton remnant. Due to the textured fabric the finished result is different from my previous makes as the collar isn't as structured but that's the look I was going for and I didn't interface the collar either. The skirt is another, my third or fourth, #peppermintpocketskirt from @paper_theory and @peppermintmagazine . I like the skirt as it's a good length and not too full. I have omitted the pockets (I know it's called the pocket skirt!) but I wasn't keen on how they bagged out. The fabric is a medium weight beautiful dark teal cotton from @sarahsimplelifeuk (no longer trading as Sarah has retired). After a few makes that I haven't been so happy with it's nice to go back to old favourites.

Kicked off year 10 wearing me-mades! The Donny Shirt by @fridaypatterncompany wasn’t on my must make radar initially, but I’m so glad I made it! It’s highly likely that I’ll make it again because it’s so easy to make and wear. I used a gorgeous batik that I picked up from @AfricanBaskets at Quiltcon. This version has no modifications, but I could stand a full bust adjustment so I will do that when I whip up my next one. The @grainlinestudio Maritime Shorts turned out well despite my best efforts to ruin them. This pair has a fantastic swayback adjustment, if I do say so myself. I’ll need to shorten the front rise and zipper when I make them again. I don’t love the shape of the front pocket opening so I’ll make some changes there. Maybe you saw it in my stories, but this #DonnyShirt was meant to be a wearable muslin for a future project and… I actually love it! I made my usual #FridayPatternCompany size (L) with no edits. I thought I’d want to add length or a full-bust adjustment, but after consulting with my panel of experts (aka my buddies at work at the fabric store), I think it’s perfect as is. The fabric was a free bin find from pre-pandemic, it’s a lightweight cotton sheeting. Next time I’ll use a lighter interfacing (ShirtTailor is slightly too stiff, but I’ll live with it). Here is my #topnine2023 featuring almost all of my go to sewing patterns. It was the year I turned 50, and a real mix of highlights and difficulties personally and for many. It was also the year that saw war, conflict and the destruction of life intensify and not just limited to Israel-Palestine, and Russia-Ukraine. As a parent and educator I continue to worry deeply about the world we are leaving for the generations after us. It was a year that many of us struggled to know if posting our recent sewing makes was something that we should continue to do, and something that I'm still uncertain about. However, I'm certain that I'm grateful to be able to sew and for the peace and calmness that creating using my hands gives me, and I'm grateful for the Instagram sewing community. ✨Make Nine 2024 Review✨ ⁣ ⁣ I’m really pleased that this year I have managed to complete all of the projects in my #makenine2024 plans. There was a point when I thought I might not finish them but managed to finish 4 in the last 3 months. ⁣ ⁣ The first grid shows photos of my nine finished makes and the second grid shows the plans I had made. This year I decided to pick nine new patterns that I wanted to make but hadn’t had the opportunity to yet. ⁣ ⁣ Here are the details of my finished garments. ⁣ Working from left to right starting at the top row: ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1️⃣ #donnyshirt @fridaypatterncompany I ended up making three of these blouses and love wearing all of them. JAPAN 🇯🇵 Never thought I’d go to Japan, but my brothers wanted to and now I can’t believe I slept on this amazing place! Truly a WONDERFUL country to visit, and I just barely scratched the surface! I will be singing its praises indefinitely! We had 10 days and made up the itinerary as we went (I just had a flight into Tokyo and out of Osaka, hotels and experiences were booked on the fly). We spent 3 days in Tokyo, 3 days at @kakurinbo_temple outside of Fuji (the highlight of the trip!!), and 4 days in Kyoto. I hate most cities, Tokyo was overstimulating af but allowed us to each indulge our special interests, Kyoto was pretty cool & I’d def go again, but mostly I wish I spent more time exploring the wonderful nature Japan has to offer! My brothers ended up being super down for crafts, so we took an intro to Sashiko class at @canoha_sashiko, which became my travel craft for the rest of my trip! We went fabric shopping in the Nippori district, I bought knickknacks from many shops, but Nagato was my fav, & I got a few cuts of lovely fabric for a great price! We took a silk weaving class at @kyoto_traditional_textile , which was my first time using a loom! Then I found some great cotton prints for bag making at @nomuratailorhouse, and some amazing snips, hand sewing needles and a decorative pin from @misuyabari. Traveling for three weeks with just a carryon is no joke, but I think I did a good job of packing for the heat + humidity. Double Gauze + Linen will never lead you astray! Also merino/nylon blend undies are the GOAT, esp when you find yourself washing undies in the sink on the reg! I deeply regretted wasting precious luggage space on my cotton + bamboo undies bc those suckers would not stay DRY 🥴 I’ll share more random fun things in stories when I’m up for it!

I think this is my sixth Donny shirt, and it's the first with long sleeves. I followed the hacking tips to lengthen the sleeves, but they're a little short. Next time I'll lengthen them further. What's that you say? Sewed another Donny Shirt by @fridaypatterncompany – this time with the long sleeve add-on, but I left off the cuff and shortened the sleeves to a 3/4 length instead. ✂️👕 I really like how this small adjustment changes the look and makes it super wearable for everyday. Definitely a pattern I keep coming back to! The fabric is a 100% bamboo from A. Boeken Fabric & Notions Shop in Amsterdam. This #donnyshirt from Friday Pattern Company didn’t work out for me, but thankfully my mom can wear it and likes it! This was my first time sewing since our baby was born 6 months ago and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without mom entertaining her, so it’s only fair! Going to try this again sized down, with some length added, and a lighter weight fabric and hope it feels a little better on me!

There’s nothing better than getting sewing projects organized (okay, maybe ice cream and the smell of jasmine and plenty of other things). I went OFF a bit earlier this summer with some fabric purchases and have to ensure I get those completed before I move onto some ideas for fall (i’m thinking a matching set???). I got this fabulous blue bull denim and buttercup printed twill from @blackbirdfabrics. I just got the #bestiebag finished, kudos to @hisydgraham for her fabulous tutorials! When I saw the #marzipanmakerscoat release, I instantly fell in love with that pattern. I have a few iterations I want to make, but want my French blue chore coat. I’ve spent far too long on vintage eBay hunting for one. There’s no one having more fun with blockprints these days than @fluidplusdrape. My subpar photography goes well with my subpar sewing, but I’m so pleased with this @fridaypatterncompany #donnyshirt I just finished. I expect I’ll like it even more after I wash it, as it’s currently made of about 80% spray starch. Size L, no mods except to make it about 3/4” longer (actually more than that as I did a rolled hem). Fabric is some insanely lightweight synthetic something from @crowdedclosetic (where I also picked up the extremely helpful spray starch tip. Also features (not pictured) my favorite vintage detail—unfinished seams, as the 3/8” seam allowance doesn’t afford much in the way of non zigzag seam finishes and I was working with my Singer Featherweight, which is a straight stitch machine.

Week three of Me Made May! Started off week 3 with the same illness that took Liam out last week so it was a PJ day but fortunately I have lovely new memade pjs (note this photo was not taken on my sick day!) I absolutely love the @matchymatchysewingclub brunch club set - this was my first pair made out of @minervadotcom cotton sateen. I made a straight size m with no adjustments and the fit is perfect. I used 3 mtrs of fabric. I loved this so much I went on to make a short pair which I got out of 2 meters AND then I made a pair of my friend out of viscose. I have to say - the viscose pair was a bit tricky and it’s not as neat as my cotton pairs. Fortunately my friend is a sewist herself so she knows the craic! Sometime in the last year, I decided I wanted to make a handmade wardrobe. I've been sewing all my life, but never very seriously. I am like my dad in always wanting to make something, do something with my hands. When he passed away last year, sewing became my mechanism for reaching back and connecting with him. I have learned so many new skills. I sew almost every day, even if it's for 10 or 15 minutes. I love the feeling of finishing something and wearing it. I'm finding that it's more thrilling to wear things after the second or third or fourth wash, when I can really appreciate my new skills. My latest make is a cool linen viscose co-ord set, and I love it!!! The top is the Donny Shirt by @fridaypatterncompany made up in viscose linens from @jennystitchesfabrics which is super soft and floaty, so go grab some before it all disappears as its selling out fast! I made a size small which is a size down and it gives a more fitted look. The trousers are the Mitchell Trousers by @closetcorepatterns again in viscose linen. I made up a size 8 which is as the pattern recommends so this pattern has come out true to size. I took 1" out of the front and back crotch and 5" off the leg length. Donny update! I'm basically finished except the sleeve hem. I decided to do a bound hem at the bottom for a really crisp finish and it wouldn't work on a more drapey fabric but it looks great. Harness has been on my ToDo list but materials were hard to find until yesterday I got 9 belts (3+3+3) and I knew I could make 3 harnesses. That was a luck! And here is the first one. Here being worn - is my first version of the amazing Donny Shirt by @fridaypatterncompany This one was made using black and white gingham seersucker from my stash, purchased a year or so ago. I made a size medium and the only modification I made was to shorten the neckline depth slightly, but needn’t have done it and will make the next one as it comes out to the packet. Anyway, the photos were taken on the 29th, so I decided it still counts 😛 I wore my Donny shirt again and I quite like it, but I’ll need to make some small adjustments on the next one. The lapel ended up a bit more curved than the pattern piece — probably because my linen fabric was shiftier than expected, and I was a bit heavy-handed with the iron when trying to press the stitch line to the wrong side (I also forgot to trim the lapel seam allowence on the front bodice a bit shorter to make this easier — but the collar worked out well at least!). The 28th turned out to be a surprisingly good day despite only getting 2.5 hours of sleep. When I woke up and realized I wasn’t going to fall back asleep, I mentally prepared to cancel everything I’d planned. But somehow, I ended up having more energy than expected! I even made some design changes to the bra I was working on and did a bit of hand sewing 😊 I also spent 1.5 hours on the phone with a friend planning a graduation gift for another friend. We used to hang out in the stables almost every day growing up, so it was really nice to catch up — t’s been almost a year (I’m not great at replying to messages…) ❤️ I was quite tired after the call, but I decided to cycle over to my cousin’s for a short visit (which, of course, ended up being longer than planned — but it a nice evening). The weather was beautiful and it felt like a shame to stay inside all day. #donnyshirthack 🧵 I’ve been meaning to hack the @fridaypatterncompany #donnyshirt into a dress ever since I made my first shirt last year, and saw so many great dress versions. I just got round to it with the new long sleeve add-on, which is such a great addition. For the dress hack, I cut the bodice at the lengthen/shorten line and combined the back and yoke. Instead of the inner yoke, I drafted a neck facing. The skirt is just two long rectangles. I initially used the whole width of the remaining fabric, but that was a bit too voluminous, so I took off about 12 inches of width from the front and back. I used the pockets from a different dress pattern, and extended the top of the pocket pieces so I could anchor them into the waist seam. It was easier than I thought, and no more flapping pocket bags! The fabric is a gorgeous linen and viscose blend, #strawberryfayre by @fabricgodmother. I bought 2.7m in the sale last year. This is a second; there are some tiny white flecks on the fabric, but not very obvious. The fabric would have been enough for a midi length skirt, but I made a deep hem for it to finish just above the knee.
