I made this with the gaberdine that came in the @fabricgodmother dream wardrobe box and lined it with fabric from @rainbowfabrickilburn. It rained all night on Tuesday and into yesterday morning!! Hurrah. My new plants were all standing to attention. After the flooring guy came to measure up the whole bungalow, we walked along the beach looking at the moody skies. Mr T was wearing his @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket in #merchantandmillsfabric dry oilskin. I wore mine too. This fabric is amazing. It’s stiff when you buy it but quickly turns softer and do gorgeous to wear. It’s warm too. These jackets were a fun make and perfect to wear. The pockets are deep and the curved back hem is spot on, as is the hood which you can see out of in the wind and rain, unlike some RTW ones. He’s also wearing the newest #jedediahpants in M&Mills 8oz sanded twill which I made last summer. I made a month’s worth of granola in the evening- a ginger one (with crystallised ginger) from dishingupthe dirt.com which I’ve made for years, and then tried @terianncarty ‘s Nutella granola, but used palm oil free chocolate hazelnut spread from @waitrose. It has macadamia nuts and hazelnuts in it, and oh my goodness, it’s divine served with their delicious Greek yoghurt and strawberries and blueberries. I also took a couple pics of the amazing sunset after a cloudy day. We survived Storm Darragh intact and went out for a cracking breakfast at @therivershackdevon this morning. They are closed now until March, sadly. It’s such a beautiful place to eat by the beautiful mill pond at Stoke Gabriel. We couldn’t eat outside today - the wind was so fresh and blowing at 47mph and icy 🥶. We were toasty warm in our @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket @merchantandmills dry oilskin us such a great fabric because it cuts the wind. Worn here with my M&Mills #mmmargot pinafore in their gorgeous soft 11-wale corduroy. Mr T’s #jedediahpants are also in their 11-wale corduroy. He knitted his hat. The wind has stripped all of the trees of their leaves now, so it’s well and truly winter. Bought a little Christmas tree on the way home but we were so full of cooked breakfast that we didn’t have the energy to put our decorations up!! We’ve spent the afternoon knitting, each knitting a sweater for Mr T. We’re so used to having a smoothie followed by poached eggs for breakfast 😆. We hope you had no storm damage where you live and have had a peaceful day. He’s completely dressed in memades - M&Mills linen The Tee, Thread Theory #finlayson sweater, @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket in @merchantandmills dry oilskin and #fulfordjeans in M&Mills sanded twill and the first thing he ever knitted - his red beanie. We had a lull in the storm for a couple of hours and went down to the breakwater hoping to see big waves but it was fairly calm despite the fact we could only walk halfway along the breakwater before the wind was too strong for safety. All of our fishing fleet is tucked away safely (at least we hope all of them are). It’s rare that you see all the trawlers and other fishing boats in the harbour at the same time. The little beach is Brixham’s only beach! We were woken at 6:15am by an almighty crack of thunder so loud overhead and huge hailstones hitting our attic bedroom velux windows so hard. Our dogs leapt off their beds and came run into our room, and jumped on top of us trembling. It’s so very humbling to know that they totally see us as their source of comfort and safety. Anyway we’re back in our cosy cottage and the wind is howling around us and the rain lashing the patio doors. The green upside down bell in the penultimate slide is just that. It rings when the waves hit it a certain way. I couldn’t capture it ringing this afternoon for you even though I heard it several times. The last time we played in our band Cloud 9 in Brixham Theatre was to raise money for the installation of this bell. They have one in Appledore in N Devon. A twofer for him! First the #BeachcomberJacket from @FridayPatternCompany. This casual lined jacket will be great for days that aren’t too cold or wet. That time is coming someday fairly soon, right? We even chose a size that left enough room underneath for an extra layer if necessary but isn’t too oversized without. He picked a bold corduroy fabric in a greyed green that of course doesn’t photograph correctly at all. The detail pic is the closest. And for lining it’s the same Dragon Flame quilting cotton that I made my ironing board covers from recently. He hadn’t even remembered that fact when he chose the last of the bolt at @Dressew so I had the opportunity to combine the last of the leftovers of both jacket lining and covers to squeeze a #WBMTropicalShirt to match. This is a classic camp shirt pattern and he has many of them now which are worn all summer. (I even have another cut out in linen but may not get to sew it until too late to wear it!) Back to the jacket. I used the original wider collar although they have a narrower version available as well. This one can be popped high for lots of neck coverage if necessary. There’s also a hood if you prefer but he never wears hoods so I didn’t bother with it. For the jacket’s chest pockets I used a couple of the free pocket add-ons available for their Ilford Jacket instead of the included one. I chose a similar one but a little larger than Beachcomber’s and I also went for a pen pocket under the left one. This won’t actually be for a pen but for his sunglasses to hang from! Seriously though, remind me why I decided to make welt pockets in this thick corduroy? Ugh. At least you can’t see the back part! Then I finished up with copper snaps from good old @LonsdaleLeather and I’m getting really comfortable applying them now especially after my raingear projects. Hammer time! Oh and did I mention he’s also wearing a pair of his favourite #JutlandPants and I still have one last pair to make him before the end of the month. Today I finished making my first outerwear, the #beachcomberjacket by @fridaypatterncompany for my husband. I used @robertkaufman #grandsur fabric from @minervadotcom. It was quite the learning curve! My first time making welt pockets and they certainly tested me! I haven't used this kind of snap before either and am not entirely sure how well attached they are. I also quilted the lining fabric for a bit of extra warmth. Another beautiful sunshiny winter day when the light is so beautiful and soft, and we managed to climb three Tors on Dartmoor today - Bell Tor, then Chinkwell Tor and then Honeybag Tor, plus Bonehill Rocks, which are technically a tor as they are huge and on a hill. Some of these huge granite outcrops appear to have list their “tor” names. I wore my @merchantandmills #fielderdress in some Lithuanian wool & linen blend made several years ago now, my Shetland cardigan (made 2017) and my recently made @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket in M&Mills dry oilskin. It was 6oC up there but I had to remove the cardigan because I was too warm. Fair isle cardigans & sweaters in @jamiesonsofshetland spindrift 2-ply are so incredibly warm!! Mr T is sporting his M&Mills Landgate jacket in their navy dry oilskin and Jedediah Pants in their gorgeous rich brown jumbo cord, plus a me-knitted Rowan sweater. It's the day after a gorgeous wedding and we've taken advantage of the beautiful gardens to get some pics of my most recent make! This was a birthday present for my lovely husband and in true chaotic sewist style, the buttons went on the day after his birthday... But to be honest, this was a more timely present than some of the other things I've promised to sew for him! This is the @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket, made in the most stunning green denim from @fabworksmillshop! We picked this up on a visit to their amazing shop that Chris arranged as a surprise for our second wedding anniversary and I have got enough to make myself my own jacket too! The lining and the buttons came from them too and I'm definitely a fan of their stuff! The Beachcomber jacket came together really nicely; it's got some great details, like the hem and front facing, which gives a great finish with the lining and the welt pockets. Amazing weather again, especially for a stroll along our breakwater here, which was constructed after the Great Gale of 1866, which destroyed almost all of Brixham’s fishing fleet. This was ten years after the Victorians modernised our cottage here from being a “peasant’s hovel” as it was described in the Doomsday Book, so we were told. Down to the lighthouse and back is exactly a mile so we often see joggers running back and forth along it to clock up their miles. Today there were four plucky ladies swimming just as we were leaving. We’re both totally dressed in memades, our @fridaypatterncompany Beachcomber jackets and my #mmflorence dress all in @merchantandmills fabrics and Mr T’s Jedediah pants made about 7 years ago in top quality brushed twill from @stonefabrics My boots are ancient Dr Martens, authentic wedge and still going strong. Our youngest daughter is home analysing limpets at different tide levels on five different east facing beaches for her dissertation. She has picked the best week for weather. The sun came out!! There was a couple of hours lull in the stormy weather so we legged it up over the hill and down the steep track to our local beach where we swam many days last summer. Oh my goodness - Storm Herminia has stripped it of its beautiful soft sand. Instead of flat pebbles in the top half and soft sand for the children to play, it’s now covered in rocks 😱. The sand will return though. It usually does. We were glad of our @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket in @merchantandmills #dryoilskin. It really does stop the icy wind from freezing us. The NT wildfowl lake behind the beach is so big and full of water now and the narrow 1 1/2 mile steep track down was a mini river and hard to negotiate in places. So different from our summer walks to swim there. It was a shock to wake to grey sky yesterday after weeks of sunshine and we set off to do a 5-mile walk but it started raining so we came home and I worked on trying to get my sewing room right. I’m still not completely happy with it in terms of where things should go, but getting there. I wore my fabulous bright blue stretch babycord #esmetunic by @lottajansdotter. I did hack the sleeves as they were sooo tight on my toile when I made my first one several years ago. This glorious blue cord was from @stonefabrics in Totnes. This is the best thing I’ve ever sewed. My son turned 20 on Monday, and I decided to start this project Sunday morning. I had the idea to use the Great Wave tapestry he had hanging in his childhood bedroom as a jacket lining, so I went for it. I’m so pleased with how this turned out. I did my best to line up the image in the lining pieces. I’m excited to see how he likes it when we take him out for a late birthday dinner tomorrow night. #fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket

🍀 FANTASTICO 🍀 Gisteren rolde deze shacket onder mijn naaimachine vandaan. De eerste beachcomber maakte ik afgelopen kerst, maar de wollen stof was en te warm en te kriebelig voor het aankomende seizoen. Dus ja, er moest een nieuwe versie komen. Ik was al tijden fan van de fableism stoffen bij Ansje en de man koos voor deze prachtige geweven stof. Het resultaat is een heerlijk dunne, soepele blouse. Ik liet de voering van het patroon weg, voegde een rugbeleg toe en verlengde de mouwen met 2cm. En zocht natuurlijke leuke labeltjes uit (zie foto 3 & 4). En ja, de blouse ging vandaag gelijk aan! 🌊 Beachcomber Jacket 🌊 Say hello to Jamie’s newest corduroy jacket! I think this is the beginning of a yearly adventure now… I’m a little ashamed to say I bought the fabric back in October, promised it to Jamie for our little holiday in Rye in December, chopped it out in November then lost all steam on it… In my defence, I had a nightmare chopping it out when despite buying the right amount for a hooded view, I couldn’t even get all the basic pieces for the hood-less view out of the fabric. My guess is because corduroy is directional, my chopping layout got stuffed. What you can’t tell is that the collar and the hem facings are all made out of multiple pieces of fabric sewn together! I tried to buy an extra half metre of the corduroy but alas, it was out of stock with no restock in sight 🥲 ANYWAY! Jamie loves it. I love it. The stress is almost a distant memory. He chose the fabric, the lining and the buttons, and I appreciate all those details. No climbing Tors on Dartmoor today - they had blizzards up there yesterday. It was bitterly cold here and we took a two hour stroll around our little harbour. I wore my lovely warm @fridaypatterncompany #beachcomberjacket in @merchantandmills #dryoilskin. You can read about my jacket on the Friday Pattern Company blog “Style Friday”. The oilskin really cuts the wind. I’m also wearing my M&Mills Margot pinafore in their 11-whale super soft corduroy. Trying to build a few last memories of our beautiful harbour here, as our house move is looking pretty positive now. (Don’t worry, there’s a lovely little harbour where we are moving - we’re not leaving the sea!). Brixham is one of England’s busiest working fishing ports and in the early evenings you can see the trawlers etc coming back in. Swipe to the end to see. In the penultimate video they were unloading shellfish and the lorry was there ready to whisk the haul off up country. In the one before that you can see the pilot boat coming in with the shellfish boat. We walked to the end of the breakwater which is exactly a mile long. Boy, was it cold with the wind off the rough sea! 🥶 The breakwater was built after the Great Storm of 1866 which destroyed the harbour. The harbour was used for the ships involved in the D-Day landings. It was lovely to see so many swans on the slipway, too! With my customer’s permission, she is allowing me to share her Quilted Jacket masterpiece!! She purchased the Beachcomber Jacket pattern but made her own changes. Like the length. Isn’t it incredible? She chose a lot of Tilda for her coat, but also incorporated some of her own stash. That bunny fabric is so cool… and the fact that she appliquéd bunnies onto her jacket. Not my most recent make but I've had to keep it secret until @travelmike101 30th birthday! It's a patchwork of fabrics from Peru, Africa and mostly G&G from leftovers from jeans, jackets and coats I've made in the past. I have a new appreciation for patchwork, it's hard work! Really pleased with the outcome though and even happier that it managed to stay a surprise. It's the Friday pattern company beachcomber jacket lengthened and with the elasticated sleeves removed. Next time I'll definitely lengthen the collar but other than that happy with the finish. Labels from Kylie and the Machine. I made this with the gaberdine that came in the @fabricgodmother dream wardrobe box and lined it with fabric from @rainbowfabrickilburn.
