July has undoubtedly been the month of the Statement Sleeve. Do I need to wax lyrical about how much I love a big sleeve? 🤔 No, I didn’t think so. 🤭 I keep meaning to make a jacket that would accommodate such glorious sleeves, but it remains on the job list. My love for a voluminous silhouette means that cardigans and ‘normal’ jacket sleeves just don’t work - I can’t bear to crush the fabric and ruin the shape. Is it too much? I do hope so. 🤭 Deepest apologies to the 11 of you who told me to stick to gold ricrac only, I went with the majority who told me to add the pink and orange too. 🧡🩷😂 Let’s face it, the poll was pretty irrelevant. 😉😇 My third @silversagapatterns #opheliadress is hot off the machine, and it’s definitely the maddest 🤪. It swallowed 5m of this gorgeous tiger 🐅 block print from @rainbowfabrickilburn , I only have small scraps left thanks to careful pattern placement and matching. The shirring on the sleeves is such fun to do, my favourite part is seeing how it shrinks with steam - look at the difference! 🤯 I love this cotton, I absolutely had to have it. Its sale went live at 6pm one evening in February and I’d bought it by 6.02pm! I’m learning to embrace its natural imperfections, but it’s unfortunate that there are two obvious ones on the front bodice. It was too late by the time I noticed, and there wasn’t enough fabric to cut out a replacement, so I’m rolling with it. Choosing embellishments entertained me for hours 😂. I buy this stuff and am then genuinely surprised by how much there is in the stash. The pom-poms from @aberdashery were non-negotiable and I think they go well with the vibe of the fabric. So that’s today’s photoshoot done. Not easy when accompanied by 4 legged interactive friends. 🥰🐶🐶🐱🐱 Quick IG reality check……don’t be fooled by the smile today. It’s been three years since the amazing @sosewdressmaking came to Belfast frocktails wearing my perfect dress - it was fitted in the places I want it to fit, flowy in the places I want it to flow and had the most amazing keyhole detail in the back. So I asked her - what pattern is that? And got the answer every copycat sewist dreads… it’s self drafted. Poor Sharlene - Everytime I saw her I found a way to work it into conversation “when are you going to release that dress?” and because she’s Sharlene and she’s amazing she took her time, added about a zillion more views and options for it and made it better than I could ever have imagined! And now it’s here and I got a chance to test it!!! The Ophelia Dress has a close fitted bodice and comes with two neckline options, two skirt options and 3 sleeve options! You can add bows to the shoulders or do the keyhole back for extra special details. It is the perfect special event dress but also can be made in a more simple way for day to day wear. It really is the dress that does everything. To properly test the bodice fit for Sharlene I made the plain round neck option without the key hole back - but I did use the keyhole sleeve detail! I used the pleated a line skirt and kept it at the length of the pattern. The bodice is fully lined and the instructions include how to make the skirt with French seams (even the pockets) which mean the insides are almost as pretty as the outsides! I made my size as per the size chart - for reference a size D and did my usual 1cm narrow shoulder adjustment. The fit of the bodice is 👌👌👌👌 I used 3 full meters of this amazing @lisacomfort viscose I had been stashing for possibly 4 years?! I am in love and as of today I have two more versions planned. Last week I made my new favorite dress and oooooh boy do I love this pattern! This was my first time using a pattern from Oh Me Oh My Sewing. I literally made zero adjustments to this pattern, which I'm not sure that has ever happened in all of the years I've been sewing! I love the elastic channels on the back. My size fluctuates quite a bit thanks to food allergies that I am currently choosing to ignore, so having something that can be comfortable all day long is a *gift* The fabric has been in my stash for a few years now. It's (once again) from work and is a 50/50 cotton and rayon blend. For the hem, I used some very pretty vintage trim that I snagged from an estate sale a while back. Another day, another maternity dress to share 😁 Unlike my previous two posts, this dress was not a pattern I had used before, and I did modify it a bit more for my bump. The pattern is loosely the Ophelia dress from @dressmakingamore, but I essentially self-drafted the lower portion. The main thing that drew me to the pattern is the lovely sleeves, which have just the right amount of volume. I love them 😍 The pattern as drafted has a waist seam with a fit and flare silhouette, but I was after a longer column type shape, so just extended the side seams down (and added a "bump" to each side of the front pieces to accommodate my bump!). I think I could have added more to the waist, as it was more stretched over the belly than I would have liked, but it definitely did the job. The fabric is a rayon spandex from @spotlightstores that I probably purchased a couple years ago. I made this mainly to wear to a dinner we hosted to celebrate our last month sans-baby, but I've worn it a few times since then to other events. I chose it because of the huge bow at the back which would match the bow on my daughter’s dress. . Sewing wise, this was quite a simple pattern to follow. I didn’t have a serger so I used a zig zag stitch instead. And I had to adjust the shoulder and back elastics a fair bit to suit my comfort level; the former being way too loose and the latter being way too tight. I also made shorter length puffed sleeves to suit our weather. Lastly, I think square necklines are flattering but at the same time difficult to avoid gaping (or maybe I’m not doing it correctly?) so I also shortened the front elastic for more security…maklumlah/as you know it, already wearing a rather backless number for a very traditional festival (Chinese New Year) as it is, definitely wanna avoid 走光/cleavage flashing otherwise will kena shifty eyes from conservative relatives) . Spot the mistake at the back, heh. The tie fabric is upside down. I forgot to cut mirror images. . Also, I think I left too large a space between the back tie and the skirt (when I joined the skirt to the bodice). See picture 3 for what I mean.
