Today’s Open Sewing Class with Sue, Glennis & Jordan saw everyone finish sewing their garments! Jordan joined us for the first time, sewing a @paper_theory Zadie wrap dress for the second time. She had a couple of bits to unpick & repair as well as sleeve & skirt hems to press & sew. The gorgeous fabric is from @fabricgodmother Sue finished this lovely @sewoverit Silk Cami Top, just in time for the hot weather. She understitched the facings, sewed the shoulders with that clever one-inside-the-other trick for a clean finish & then the hem. It looks lovely tucked in or left loose. She sewed it in a viscose fabric that we now have in a navy colourway with pink flowers. Glennis finished the tiny dress for her granddaughter, sewing buttonholes for the first time & adding sweet bows to the shoulders. Glennis decided to sew something for herself, choosing a summer top with ties on the shoulders. The @paper_theory #zadiedress in a lovely soft green floral from @textileexpress that’s a bargain at £5 a metre. Ref F251 on their website. Regular readers will recognise the backdrop as our annual pilgrimage to the Yorkshire Dales. Sadly our first without Mum. She loved it here, we’d generally do not much at all but follow a regular pattern of eating ice cream, watching tennis (sorry Josh), reading, looking at the view, pootling about, visiting Aunty Babs, having tea at @bettys , eating cheese, doing jigsaws, walking (fair weather only), playing games, watching the rain, resting and resetting to face the world again a week later. Today is Mum’s birthday and it’s super hot, so we’ve had one final ice cream at the @reethicecreamparlour and scattered some of her ashes off the deck so she can forever look at this glorious view. The remainder will go off the cliffs at Sewerby or Flamborough, or maybe Danes Dyke on the East Yorkshire coast in a few weeks time when my brother and I finish clearing the house. It’s been odd being here without her. I went down with a four day migraine over my birthday after @abiexample took this picture. Grief is hard. The Zadie dress isn’t hard. It’s fairly easy, has pockets and is comfy in the heat. I’ve added 6 inches to the length. Everything else is as the regular pattern. Me Made May Day 10 And the summer returns! Lovely morning watching my boys at the first football session. Never thought I’d enjoy that one but it was so lovely to see my boys feeling happy and confident. Wearing a happy dress too! This is the @paper_theory Zadie dress in a seersucker from @fabricgodmother I love seersucker. Don’t know if it’s the childhood memories, the texture or the fact that I don’t need to iron it! 😂 Paired with a RTW cardigan for one of my favourite colour combos. Pattern evaluation: Ok this is a superb one and really shows Tara’s skill. She took the Zadie (a classic) and turned it into a wrap dress. BUT she added features to make it the best wrap dress! The flat under skirt is genius. I’m always after day dresses and often end up feeling they are too full. This is the perfect day dress. 10/10 for this design. Added to remake list! I've been enjoying this outfit combination lately - it's a #ZadieDress made from @merchantandmills linen remnants, layered over an old black rollneck, with a #vestno1 for extra core warmth. I love wearing knitted vests over dresses! I've been dreaming of, and sketching out rough ideas for, a long vest/ tunic with side ties to wear over dresses. They're such good layering pieces. I paticularly like the witchy colours of this combination too. Perfect for a day working from home, as I start to get the Briar Shawl kits ready for the end of this month. I've also found myself really enjoying wearing this Zadie through winter - the big skirt is actually surprisingly practical for moving about the garden, and I like that I can adjust the tightness. Last finished object of 2024💃 As soon as I saw Lorna's (@thread.and.yarn ) stunning mmetta dress I knew I wanted to make a red block printed wrap dress too. So this is shamelessly inspired by her beautiful birthday dress🤩 I used the #zadiedress pattern, originally #zadiejumpsuit by @paper_theory. To maximise on the fabric I had, I made a simple rectangular gathered skirt with the rest of the fabric after cutting the bodice and just one seam in the centre back. That means there are no pockets right now, but I might slash the skirt at the right spot and insert pockets at a later point. The Very Long Time Coming Dress… Back in February I was contacted by the lovely Fleur from @longancraft who gifted me this beautiful Linen / Lyocell Chinoiserie fabric. I thought the @paper_theory #zadiedress would be the perfect project for such a delicate, summery fabric. However! As is often the case, life had other plans. The day or two after I started cutting the fabric we received news that my Dad had only weeks to live. Sewing was put aside so my family could spend this time together. It’s taken a while but I’m glad I have finally completed this and I will certainly be rocking this at the Melbourne garden party next year. The fabric was so beautiful to work with and there is a beautiful range of variations of this fabric on the @longancraft website. There’s even some corduroy, Swiss dot, denim (so many colours!!!) and gauze that I have my eye on. Me Made May Day 4, rainy Sunday church edition! Wearing a recently finished @paper_theory #zadiedress made from some blue floral lawn. This dress was originally a skirt that I made 2 years ago. Swipe to the end to see that skirt! I didn’t really wear the skirt much and decided I wanted to take it apart and use the pieces plus a little extra, to make this dress. One of the many things I love about sewing, getting to remake and reuse things that have passed their usefulness. Dress mods: I used the full width of the fabric for the skirt back and instead of fold over bias around the neckline I used it to make a facing. I also shortened the bodice by 1”. #memademay2025 #memademay

I was humbled by this dress. I started to feel real cocky thinking I was really nailing it, no mistakes, just perfection. I wore this floral #ZadieDress out for dinner on my partner's birthday the other night - it has this lovely, soft vintagey print, and whenever I put it on it reminds me of Barbara's 'posh frock' in The Good Life. I also seem to spend most of my time in dungarees with muddy fingernails at the moment, so it felt lovely to dress up! ~~~~~ I'm holding a sock because this is also a little note to say that booking is open on my website for the Summer Solstice craft retreat ☀️ it has a knitting focus, though all hand crafts are welcome! We'll be spending 26-29th June in a historic house in Stroud, crafting together, willow weaving, and enjoying homecooked food and storytelling by the midsummer fire. I can't wait! Happy Samhain / Halloween 🎃 I've been so excited about my celebrations this year. There was a lovely gathering of friends with food and storytelling earlier this week, and I've spent today on an archaeological trail - exploring some ancient settlements and ritual burial sites here in Dartmoor. I'm spending the evening at a spooky folk gig, then the night under the stars (possibly clouds!) Feeling very fortunate to have such a peaceful day exploring and visiting ancient sites. I started #ScrapBustingSeptember2024 with a dress, and here’s another one for the last day. I made this #PaperTheoryZadie as a jumpsuit in 2020 (see pic 3 for a bad mirror selfie of the original) and just finished changing it to a #ZadieDress The fabric came from a linen tablecloth. The print is busy enough that it’s hard to see the piecing that went into making skirt panels from the right side, but pic 2 shows the inside, where the seam lines are more visible. There’s very little of the original tablecloth left, and I think I’m much more likely to wear it in this incarnation. A month isn’t long enough for all the scrap busting—pic 4 shows some #hexies I’ve been making from scraps over the last few weeks.
