Ray Pinafore
Paper Theory

Ray Pinafore
The Ray Pinafore is a three-quarter length dress that finishes just below the calf. It fits close around the bust but falls loose and straight to the hem in a trapeze shape with no waist shaping. The back is low but designed to cover most bra fastenings. Features include low armholes, in-seam pockets, wide splits on both sides with a deep hem facing, and three different strap options. Recommended for medium weight woven fabrics like linen, ramie, cotton twill, drill or denim.

I love a good #pinafore - this in a heavy denim is the #raypinafore from @paper_theory I adjusted this at the back seam to account for my sway back. Love the topstitching details and buckles. #sewingproject #2 #sew #memade #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe #pinaforedress

#memademay2025day9 Another #raypinafore by @paper_theory. This time in a heavy-weight brushed cotton gabardine from @stonemountainfabric. I’m also wearing a tencel linen (the most amazing color and drape) from @saltlakesewciety made up as an #agnespjstop by @paper_theory #memademay2025

I’ve loved spending time making my amazing Mum @derekleiedwards her very own #raypinafore by @paper_theory. After she tried on mine we decided to size up to give her extra room for more layers for the English weather! Fabric is a denim from @spotlightstores that’s been in stash for a few years and has acquired some faded fold lines that we both quite like, adds character! #imakemyownclothes #makingformum #sewingismysuperpower #sewover50

This is the #raypinafore from Paper Theory Patterns. I used a midweight denim which is a first for me. I love the top stitching and side vent details. Now I need to paint things and get it splattered with colours for maximum effect! ❤️🌈✂️🧵🪡

Say hello to @paper_theory’s latest pattern release, the #raypinafore (15 sizes, up to a 64.6” chest). Today I’m sharing my tester version of the pinafore — I love layering dresses and the “workwear” elements of this garment. I am no stranger to @paper_theory’s patterns — the Zadie Jumpsuit was one the first indie patterns I ever bought (made two) and last year I sewed the Olya Shirt for my Japan capsule wardrobe. Similar to those patterns, the Ray Pinafore has immaculate instructions and interesting construction methods (my brain was 🤯 when it all came together so beautifully, inside and out). Here I sewed a size 20, based on my current bust measurement of 44.” No other modifications. I’m 5’9” and the length is perfect for me, but you may want to shorten/lengthen (final instructions place straps a little more towards center; as other testers found they slipped off the shoulders). Sewed with IKEA fabric - you cannot beat $14.99 for 3 meters!

The #RayPinafore by @paper_theory is out today! Truly excited to have been chosen to test this. And look at it! It’s a dream! I love love love it. Made from a thrifted linen tablecloth (again!). I don’t need drugs, I just need regular trips to the thrift store. Fit notes: size 8, no bust darts. Omitted all topstitching due to the drape-y nature of the fabric. #memade #memadewardrobe #memadeveryday #isewmyownclothes #thriftflip #linen #tableclothdress #fuckfastfashion

I really don’t enjoy photographing my makes while I’m wearing them 😬 (plus I need to try and keep my hands out of my pockets 🤣)……but I do love seeing sewn garments on other people so I suck it up 😝 What I do love is my new #RayPinafore (I have another version I will post later) from @paper_theory - pattern released today! This will definitely be a repeat pattern over the summer and even into the cooler months! That pocket and side gusset top stitch detail was what grabbed me when I saw Tara’s denim version and I am not disappointed! My main concern was the length of the side splits and if they would show a lot of leg….but they absolutely don’t! Such a clever design feature and the only time they did flap open was outside on a windy day (expected really!) I’m already planning more versions….linen, needlecord and definitely a heavier denim version! This denim was from my stash and I have no idea where I bought it - it feels like a heavy chambray/lightweight denim and it was so nice to work with. I also made a matching jacket - pics to follow! #sewover50 #isewmyownclothes #sewingismysuperpower #sewnz #sewwhatihave2024 #memade #nzpatterndesigner

I brought back a little bit of Maui with me… Wearing tropical fruit while I eat the tart apples falling in my backyard… At the end of our Maui trip last week, I realized we were staying 10 minutes from @juliaallissoncost studio. I’ve been following her for a couple years on IG, inspired by @iusedtobeacurtain 👋 It was so cool to find out more about how she paints the world around her and then prints it on fabric. She also showed me her children’s book - which I bought. Her book was like no other - a beautiful wordless story that is fully imagined and painted from the colorful island world she lives on. Most definitely the most meaningful souvenir I’ve ever purchased… I brought back and wear the oranges (and flowers and tiny wardrobes) that got their start on the slopes of a tropical volcanic island mountainside 🌋🤯 This, again, is another #raypinafore by @paper_theory and a #jacksontee by @helens__closet The fabric is cotton poplin and is called #sweetsummerbluestextile

New #raypinafore #2 from @paper_theory made with a thin cotton fabric I bought a long time ago. This one has all the top stitching. Paired with the top to the #basecampset by @roadtrippatternco made in a large, with no mods, with striped merino wool I got this summer in Vancouver, Canada @oursocialfabric - a nonprofit run by volunteers, keeping deadstock out of the landfill. I realized after starting to take these pics that I have a double gusset - a gusset on top of a gusset! The Ray Pinafore and Basecamp top both have gussets. Scroll to last pic to see. Makes the whole outfit very comfy and practical, with no constrictions, which is how I like to move. I’m hoping to post everyday of #memeademay2025 #memademay2025day2

Wearable toile of #raypinafore by @paper_theory with yardage from thrift store. Worn with wearable toile of #biaspullover by @centerforpatterndesign with duvet from thrift store. For the Ray, I made a straight size 16, no mods, it’s perfect. I could make the seam allowances bigger (5/8 inch, remembering to adjust the pocket) if I want a little closer fit in the future but I like a little room. Next time I’ll also make the larger straps with d-rings and sliders. I love all the simple details - the pockets, the hem, the vents/movement in the skirt, the shape of the top and back… @darkharbouryarn saying the Ray is like second skin was what motivated me to hit the buy button, and it’s true. The Bias Pullover is one piece of fabric. The biggest size it comes in is a large. When toiling, I added 1” all the way around - except the neck and hem. I needed and kept that extra inch. I also took in a little under the underarm to reduce some fabric. After making, I noticed on the Center for Pattern Design’s website there is a slash and spread method for making larger sizes. To finish it, I simply turned under all hems twice and stitched. I could also use the extra fabric to make bias binding, making this a #lowwastepattern I’ll be making about 5 more of this combo 🤗 In the last pic I tried wearing the Ray with my #dalesweatshirt by @daisychainpatterns and it works. I made a size medium with the Peter Pan collar, pockets from the half zip and the tie is from denim selvedge that I straight stitched down the length to make sure it didn’t fall apart.

This is also a pattern I have a lot of thoughts about - the new @paper_theory #raypinafore (sizes up to 62” person bust, 64.6” finished garment). I was very fortunate to be one of Tara’s testers - it was such an interesting process - and a great look behind the scenes. Tara was excellent to work with, and keen to receive and incorporate all sorts of feedback from testers. Anyway - the thoughts… Very occasionally, you come across an item of clothing that feels like a second skin - like it’s specifically designed with you in mind - this is that for me. That means different things to different people - but for me, the Ray Pinafore is comfortable, kind of sleek, kind of dressy, and also like a slightly sexy pairs of jeans in terms of versatility. I have two, and they have fast become like a uniform. (I would be interested to know if you have a second skin pattern - let me know in the comments!) The Ray is fitted in the bodice, and more relaxed in the waist and hips. The pockets are big, and the split stays put - which is good given the wind in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. The fabric is 12oz black denim from the @wellingtonsewingcentre - and I topstitched in black. As the denim fades, the stitching will become more prominent. I did make a few small adjustments, the placement of the back straps, and the angle of the front ones. I think the back strap placement was changed in the pattern before release. I made a 10 in the top, and graded out to a 12 in the rump to allow for some future proofing. I’ve put in lots of photos - hopefully they might be helpful to see how the pattern looks from many angles and stances. It’s a banger. Swipe to the end for a visit from Bertrude. So good I made it twice! And I’m not done yet 😏 After absolutely loving my tester version of the @paper_theory Ray Pinafore, I had to make another one. This time I made it in that @fabricgodmother Ace Leopard print denim 🐆 It’s much more structured than my green needlecord version so it gives a totally different vibe, but I mean 😍 it’s amazing. If you’re a pinafore girly, this one is for you 🫶🏻 For reference, I made the size 16 based on my full bust measurement. Styled here with my trusty @tillybuttons Marnie blouse that just goes with everything 🤍 frilly white ankle socks and my new Doc Marten Mary Jane’s 🖤

Started off my autumn sewing by pattern testing for the new @paper_theory pattern, the #raypinafore , and had to stage a fall photoshoot now that the pattern has been released! 🍂🍁🍂 I love all the subtle, architectural details of Paper Theory designs, so I jumped at the chance to test this one, choosing the view with adjustable sliders to add a workwear feel. I wanted something sturdy enough to layer for the weather, so found some midweight cotton in my stash. (I think it’s the “Lived in Cotton Twill” from Blackbird Fabrics.) My favourite part of this pattern has got to be these great side vents; I walked to work in this and they allowed for a huge range of motion. The vent construction is so cool, too, with facings that hold everything in place. I sewed a size 12 and shortened by 2”. There’s some very nice linen versions of this on the hashtag that are definitely inspiring my spring/summer vision for the next one. Thanks for the pics @vanessahallpatch 🍂🍁🍂 #papertheorypatterns #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe #thanksimadeit #sewistsofinstagram #sewover40 #sewersgonnasew #sewsewsew

I was so excited to be selected as a tester for the new @paper_theory pattern, and it does not disappoint! 🙌🏻 Meet the Ray Pinafore. My uniform for the A/W24 season. I absolutely love this silhouette, I feel it gives Toast vibes with its classic tailoring, simple clean lines, quiet luxury. It is also so comfortable as there are no seams across your tummy, in just hangs so beautifully. Paper Theory has really knocked it out of the park with this one. I think the side slits are my favourite bit. Making it was also a breeze. No fiddly fastenings, and plenty options for top-stitching should you choose. And of course pockets! The finish inside is also 👌🏻 For fabric, I decided on this gorgeous moss green non-stretch needlecord from @sewmesunshine.uk Highly recommend! I’ve got my next one planned out already in THAT fabric godmother animal print denim 😁

I’m so excited to finally share my #raypinafore by @paper_theory ! 🫶🏻 I was lucky enough to test this beautiful dress, and I loved every moment of the process. The pattern that Tara from @paper_theory designed is truly a joy to sew — I’ve never worked with a pattern that had such attention to detail before! 🤍 I made mine with a flannel-like fabric, making it the perfect fall piece that my wardrobe was missing 🍂 I can’t wait to try it in different fabrics! pattern: #raypinafore by @paper_theory size: 6 fabric: flannel-like viscose #sewing #memade #handmadewardrobe #isew #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #patterntesting #diyfashion #imakemyclothes #sewingpatterns #makersgonnamake #sewcialist #sewinglove #sewingaddict #sewingcommunity #memadewardrobe #imademyclothes #slowfashion #sewsewsew #memadestyle #indiesewing #sewinglife #sewinginspiration #diywardrobe #sewingblogger #sewinginspiration

I’ve had a tie-dye pinafore taking up space in my brain for a few years, so it was great to exorcise it at the end of last year! The fabric was a white bull denim from @thefineclothcompany - I dyed it with @ritdye all purpose liquid dye - the indigo colour. (I tested a few different blues, and this was the one I liked at lots of different intensities.) This is the Ray Pinafore from @@paper_theory - I love this pattern, and it was perfect for a little bit of slightly fussy cutting. I’ve made 3 highlights of the sewing process for this pattern, all the little things I try to do to make my sewing as neat as possible. (I was involved with the test sew of this dress - and this time I used the instructions that incorporated all the tester feedback - it was fabulous to see all the things Tara included from it to make this an even better pattern.) Pattern size up to 65” bust! I did less topstitching on this one than the other two I’ve made - the fabric does the work really. I topstitched half the pocket - (I can’t remember where I saw this - maybe it was @mollymollyfabric ) and I really like the look of it here! There are lots of photos - I find it useful when people show different angles, so I’m trying to do that too! There’s a video at the end. [Middle-aged pākehā woman wearing a long denim pinafore. well this #rayPinafore is wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed making this, it came together so nicely, brilliant practice for topstitching and has really cool details. It's nice an loose and will be great to layer over jumpers, it moves nicely and the slits function great for clambering about. Ray pinafore from #paperTheoryPatterns I made size 14 Striped denim from rainbow fabrics Hardware is by annie Wearing it with #zwCroppedShirt image descriptions - 1, a full height yard selfie, I'm standing slightly sideways with my hands at my sides. I'm wearing a structured pinafore dress that hangs in a wedge shape, calf length and loose, from a distance it appears pink. I'm wearing it over a ruster red loose sleeved blouse. I have a Pal flag pinned to the bib in solidarity, a geno is currently ongoing and is facilitated by the UK gov, to our collective shame. 2, a closer view, looking down the side of the dress, showing the striped fabric and contrasting neon pink topstitching and pocket lining. I have red tights showing through the side split and pink trainers. 3, a front full height selfie showing the bib and strap shape more clearly, the front is straight and the straps are wide. 4, a back view full height selfie, the centre back seam has a contrasting line where the selvedge is showing. 5, a video to demonstrate the wedge shapes of the pattern, the pocket topstitching, the contrasting pink hem facing and the shape of the side vents. With a closer view of the back straps and black rectangular sliders and rings. #meMade #IMakeClothes #sewistsOfInstagram #ILoveToSew #SewYourOwn #MeMadeWardrobe #mixedLarping #sewOver40

CAMERA-SHY: It takes Tara Viggo and a spectacular pattern to coax me out from behind the camera to show you all the fantastic Ray Pinafore from @paper_theory. Tara has designed the pinafore of dreams - and as a longtime fan of this style I’m here to tell you it is awesome. 🧵 I had the pleasure of being in tester group 2, with a slightly longer runway to completion. That gave me time to make a toile to dial in the finer details - of which there are several, including beautiful hem facings and a nifty split side seam. That generous split seam means you will feel like you're glamorously wafting around no matter what you're up to, including packing and unpacking boxes of yarn for a woolly event like last week's @woollington. 🧶 I made my toile from a very light plain linen, sewn with contrasting thread so I could see what I was doing. My fash-un fabric was this navy check. I thought hard about pattern matching and in the end mostly gave up, given the angles present in the design and my lack of pattern-matching skill. When I was perplexed, the incredibly wise and generous @darkharbouryarn was at the ready with help. And I got a good look at her denim version at @woollington - it is a thing of glory. 🧵 I sewed a 12 on top and a 14 on the bottom. Next time (in denim, now that I’m ready with two under my belt) I may tweak the darts / straps a bit to better dial in the fit at the top. 🧵 Ray is a project that keep you on your toes and tickle your sewing brain in the nicest way. And you will step up from your machine with a fantastic dress suitable for all seasons. 🧵 Last slide shows a lifelong inspiration that truly suits a sewing room: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. If you know, you know, and you’ll steer clear of the gazpacho. 🍅 🪡 #raypinafore #sewover50 #sewistsofinstagram

Pinny! Pattern: @paper_theory #raypinafore Fabric: midweight Tencel @meetmilk_fabric Mods: shortened the dress by 3" and reduced length of straps 1.5" (this was pre pattern release) It was an absolute pleasure to pattern test this pinifore dress, I knew immediately that this tencel would slot into my wardrobe as a dress. It has been waiting patiently in my stash for a looooong time! I was inspired to buy it after falling in love with a pair of trousers @fat.bobbin.girl made maybe 2 or 3 years ago (!!!) Wild. The pattern is fabulous. It has great illustrations and instructions that were easy to follow but also privided enough interesting constructuon details to make it fun! I love the pockets and the way the topstitching matches up with the side triangles. Gorgeous. Absolutely recommend it to anyone who needs a transitional piece to pull together other things in their wardrobe. It looks lovely on its own but also styled with a jumper under or over. I wore it here with a silk shirt underneath because I've been playing with textures recently but a tight tshirt would be great too. Planning on making another in some wool before the weather gets too cold. Photos 2/3 taken at @backstitchshop

I fell in love with the #raypinafore as soon as I saw Tara's green linen version. So when I had the opportunity to test the pattern I knew exactly what fabric I wanted to use. This black and blue mini gingham linen from @blackbirdfabrics has been in my stash for awhile and it's perfect. As with all of @paper_theory patterns the construction and details are unique and well thought out. I particularly like the side seam venting and topstitch details. (Even though they aren't too visible with my fabric choice). I sewed a size 12 with no modifications. Next time I'll make the version with adjustable straps so it's easier to layer. These photos were taken when it was still warm enough to wear the dress on its own but I'm experimenting with layering now that it's cooler. Congratulations Tara on this new pattern!

I love this dress so much. how could i not?? This is the newest edition to @paper_theory 's epic sewing pattern collection, the #RayPinafore If you've never sewn up one of Tara's patterns then you do not know how meticulous a memade garment can be. Every detail is so thoughtfully taken care of. This dress is returning me back to my tent dress era; it is perfection 👌🏼 I was curious about the silhouette and wondered how it differed from other pinafore maxi dresses i've sewn. The side vents create additional ease and let the back hang perpendicular from the slope of the back, something i've never seen before. The overlapping side splits got me fumbled while sewing (instructions have since been amended), but look so good in the end. The hem facing is a nice touch and gives some weight to the skirt. Big pockets, but tbh they are more for my hands than carrying anything. Unfortunately i found a bit of peeky bra when i wore the dress alone, but i adore the layered tee look so still a happy camper after sewing this. 10/10 pattern and would make a couple more in other colours and in denim. (I sewed a size 8 and shortened the dress by 10cm) Linen fabric from @seamstressfabrics which have sadly closed. #indiesewingpatterns #asiansewists #brisbanesews #sewcialites #papertheorypatterns

The days have been getting frosty here in New Zealand, and it has us thinking about sewing all things trousers, jackets, and pinafore dresses! ❄️ Enter the star of this week's delivery, a superb selection of corduroy in varying weights and colours!🤩 We have a gorgeous selection of warm browns and deep blues, greens and greys available online and in selected stores, as well as some pastel tones that are exclusively in our Australian stores. Our pattern picks for these corduroys would be a pair of #eastsidepants from @les.perlines in the chocolate corduroy. The #reigtrousers and #daltblazer from @paulinealice_patterns in the clove corduroy for a standout matching moment. This is such a fun multi - seasonal piece. I was lucky to be a tester for the newly released #raypinafore @paper_theory . Congratulations Tara for designing such an awesome pattern! There are unique construction details for the side slits and hem facings and though I opted to make the wide sewn in straps, there are 2 other variations. It also has huge topstitched pockets! I think this pattern might get your sew-jo back! I have styled mine for our fall weather with a mock turtleneck, a quilted jacket and boots. Then I transition into spring and summer months by wearing it with a light weight tee or nothing at all. I chose to sew it up in a cotton satin poplin from @joann_stores . I put the shiny side to the inside! Both tops are @patternemporium_kate #peboundtobetee and the jacket is my #so50reworn @paulinealice_patterns #ayorajacket (further back on the grid). Happy release day to the #RayPinafore! This design is totally outside of my usual style but wow! I wasn't sure entirely how to style it at first but luckily our whacky weather has allowed me to dabble in both summer and fall style versions of this piece. I'll admit that constructing this pattern is a bit more involved than it looks, with unique hem facings, a side vent, and the construction of the top. With that said it comes together very cleanly and I really enjoy the finished product. I made the size 14. My only modification was that I took 1/2 inch off the width of the top bib on both sides for a narrower top piece. I used the adjustable strap option for the top and went with gold hardware and a matching gold top stitching which I'm really happy with! I really enjoy just how different this pattern can look depending on how you style it. 🪡🧵✂️ Pattern: #RayPinafore by @paper_theory Fabric: Bull denim from @iseefabric #millenialsewing #iseefabric #papertheory #sewersofinstagram #sewistsofinstagram
