Last night, I was honored to celebrate the @ncbw_ghac 20th Anniversary. Being a member of this organization has been incredibly fulfilling as we advocate for black women and girls. My family and friends joined us and had a great time. Heres a few snapshots of the evening. My mom was able to attend and looked stunning in her emerald green dress. 💚💚💚 She had a lovely time. I sewed my dress over the course of a few weekends. The pattern was fairly straightforward. I did a full bust adjustment, forward shoulder adjustment, modified the waist darts, added 5 inches in length to the skirt, and added an additional 1/3 inches through the hips. In retrospect, i did not need the extra hip space. I diddnt remove the extra hip space because the fabric has zero stretch and I wanted to be really comfortable. I added a modest slit on the front seam, which admittedly could have been more dramatically cut. I wasn't sure if I would keep the slit which is why it can be closed up without any issues. Hand sewing the sequin appliques was a bit tricky since it was my first time. If I were to make this again, I'd use a stretch satin fabric and make it more fitted through the hips. I’m not one to make gowns or any type of formal wear outfits nor do I have any real business doing so 😂 but this @simplicity_creative_group #s8870 intrigued me at the time. Mainly because of the sash like off the shoulder detail, which is quite a clever design. This is a pattern I took on when I wanted stretch my fingers a little bit and be adventurous and for the most part, I actually enjoyed the process. It is a little bit big on me but that’s due to the size I picked before I truly understood how to pick based on body measurements. I’ll make sure to size down to a 10 if I make my way back to the pattern again! This pattern has been in my stash a few years, and although this body is not bodying to my satisfaction, I decided to give it a go. The fabric is a Badgley Mishka stretch crepe satin that the Joanns store manager let me use a 50% off coupon on (WIN). I LOVE making dresses. This is the second evening gown I have ever made for me and it's a good thing I don't go a lot of places that need one cause I love making this kind of garment. I also think I will be able to wear it to another function in the fall, so that's a plus. I have not made any garments for myself over the last few years but I'm glad I bit the bullet and did this one. It only took me a week and I just had to be honest with myself on what size to cut out based on my current measurements and stop lamenting over the size I used to be. I have a few more patterns I have gotten out that I'm going to do this summer since I'm feeling more confident about fitting the skin I'm in. I probably would have done a couple of things differently, like eliminating the zipper on the end of the sleeve (didn't really need it) and made a bigger swayback adjustment. I don't like darts but these boob's need them and really made the difference in the fit in front. Long post to say I'm pleased with the outcome which is good since I hate to shop!! I included a video of me doing the hem so you can see the fabric. Happy 2020 Friends! I just wanted to share my final project for 2019. I got together with 2 friends to host a 1st annual New Years Gala to raise funds for and awareness to community needs. So on top of all the busyness with that, I tackled the challenge of making my dress and hubby’s tie (swipe l◀️). In the end, the biggest challenge was getting the bow tie tied 🤨. Behold. The maid of honor dress that I made for a wedding way back in November 🙃. She deserved to be posted on my feed, even if it took me a while! Pattern: #s8870 #simplicitys8870 Fabric: bridal satin that I got from a local fabric store in Dallas Modifications: If I made this pattern again, I would extend the skirt by a couple of inches so I would have had the option of covering my shoes. I'm 5'6 with 4 inch high heels in the photos, for reference. Additionally, this pattern calls for a short zipper, in my opinion, and the instructions have you stich the first couple of inches of the side seam under the armpit closed before inserting the zipper. This makes the dress nearly impossible to get on. My zipper ended up being almost twice the length of what the pattern called for and I started the zipper at the top of the side seam so that I could open the dress up on the side and step into it. #s8870 #sewingpatternreview #simplicitysewingpattern #sewistsofinstagram #sewersofinstagram #diydress #sewing

I have absolutely LOVED seeing everyone’s fabulous posts of their proudest makes for #Sew500. It’s brought me much joy this January – and it’s finally motivated me to actually post things I’ve made again (!). My proudest make is a bit of a cheat as there are two – my wedding dresses! Like so many people, our wedding plans were derailed by the pandemic and we ended up getting married on the second attempt and having the party on the third. I made my outfits for both occasions, including the shoes, of course! The long dress was for the wedding party; the pattern is Simplicity S8870 and I made it a fortnight before the wedding from a beautiful sandwashed silk from the Goldhawk Road. I added a big old cape as you can see and had SO much fun swishing about in it. For the wedding itself I made a set – a merino Gable top and an Axis skirt in THE most fabulous tasselled silk from The Silk Society. They were both such incredibly special days (thank you, darling husband and family and friends!)and looking back at the photos for this has made me so happy. This is @simplicitymccallsuk #s8870 A perfect Christmas sparkly gown made with 50p a metre glittery drapey jersey from Birmingham Rag Market!!! It is worn here at the Xmas Carol event at @thenedlondon with Gareth Malone. Such a fab night and a Xmas tradition we have with friends!! I have also shown a picture of when I wore it to "Posh or PJ" night on our retreat!!! I made it in a stretch fabric but the pattern is made for wovens. I just left out the zip!! It was size 12 on top grades to a size 16. I struggled with the sleeve as the instructions weren't great. I would make it again but without the sleeve as it would have been a quick sew. My first lace dress is finished! I used #s8870 in a size 6 for the bodice I maybe should have sized up but I just used 1/2in seam allowance. The skirt is #m7719 I definitely should have graded my patterns like a normal human but I just winged it and ended up doing a fair amount of alterations around the waist. The fit is perfect but my lace pattern is a little off. The light blue crochet lace was purchased from @moodfabrics

Just a little dress I whipped up for my daughter’s junior prom. She found the butterfly fabric last summer, then we found the blue sparkle fabric in late fall. I mashed up and hacked three patterns: @thisiskachi bodice block Michelle, Simplicity 8870 for the underskirt and lining, and Simplicity 8289 for the over skirt. And of course I added pockets! It came together easier than I expected. The bodice was challenging, since it was the most altered from the original pattern. My daughter wanted external boning channels and a lace-up back - both were new for me. But overall, I’m really pleased with how it turned out. My biggest fear was that it wouldn’t end up something she liked or wanted to wear, but she loved it! And she didn’t have to worry about anyone else showing up in the same dress. She’s planning to major in Chemistry, so we had to stop by the new science building for some pictures.
