I am still working on my Francaise, but I went on a little side quest at the end of last week and made late 1790’s gown using the American Duchess Simplicity pattern S8941 and sheer IKEA curtains! This project has been on my to-do list for years now and it hardly took any time at all! I machine sewed the majority of it except for the hemming the collar, sleeves and skirt and sewing channels for the drawstrings. I used about 3 1/2 curtain panels for the gown and linen for the bodice lining. I have 3 petticoats underneath the skirt to hold out the skirt. For the Jane Austen festival this year, I did several things to improve on my Regency outfit. I had made this cotton voile dress for the last in-person festival in 2019. Since then, I made a new linen shift that is cooler than the cotton one I had previously - Kentucky in July is HOT! I made Regency short stays (under the dress) to be more historically accurate and hopefully give better shape while being cooler. I also made a matching bonnet and reticule (purse). The Regency stays were a @redthreaded pattern and the bonnet was a pattern by Hat Patterns - Out of a Portrait. The dress and shift are made from the @americanduchess @simplicity_creative_group pattern. I researched many online tutorials to create the petticoat and the reticule. I received the pearls for my one year work-anniversary with Heartland. The purple fan is from the last Jane Austen festival - I can't remember which vendor! Next project. I'll be doing a mix of the @americanduchess #s8941 overdress pattern with the J P Ryan long sleeves - as those are some of my most favorite long sleeves ever. I want to make this as a wearable mock up for the striped fabric I dyed sage green. If all goes well it'll go to the shop. Let's see how I get on with it.

Today was such a lovely day!!! Went to @janeaustenshouse and met up with a few new friends to generally vibe around and celebrate the life of an amazing woman and her works. Honestly, it felt so good to be around people who spoke the same language as me (of Austen heroes and stately homes), and reminded me of how important it is so just be yourself and do the things you love because there will always be others who love them too! A progress post with some wise insights on that it sometimes actually does pay off to take the time and do it right. I know! Big shocker! . I'm currently working on this cream colored striped muslin dress which I intend to wear to a Bath picnic in September. I'm using the @americanduchess #s8941 pattern (which I love BTW ♥️). . The back of the dress did not turned out as planned when gathering the skirt. I then tried to chest my way through and just pull out the stripes to match those of the top. To then realize I need to take the whole thing apart, pleat it neatly and attach it. . I ended up pleating it twice as I folded in the wrong direction at the first turn... Of course I would do that, right? . It took a lot of patience and time, which if you know me - I don't do the whole patience thing... But the result speaks for itself. I'm so so happy with the result. Plus big bonus, even the shoulder seam pattern matches up which I could claim I totally planned, but which would be a huge lie! 🤣 . As im feeling a bit better again I ventured back into my sewing room and finally managed to cut out all pieces for the Luisa of Naples and Sicily dress. I am using the #s8941 pattern by @americanduchess but felt like Luisa would not have had a tailored back with this dress but rather something draped. So I copied the original pattern, then split it apart to add more volume to the back which will be draped back into shape. The lining is the original pattern shape which will help me pin and gather the fashion fabric into place. After doing everything I could to get this dress finished in time to take pictures in Solvang, spending more time wine tasting ultimately won (rightfully so🍷), so my hallway had to serve as a backdrop. I purchased this hand blocked cotton muslin from India specifically for a 1790s gown and ended up using the full 10 yards, she's floofy! On Friday I successfully defended my PhD dissertation entitled “State of Dress: Rhetoric and Clothing Reform in Revolutionary France, 1789–1804!” Very grateful for the support of a wonderful advisor and the feedback of my brilliant committee members! This was for “The Pleasure Barge of Cleopatra” party hosted by @mr_et_mrs_fox (the party is on an actual pirate ship: we sail around Venice and have a stop on Burano) I had hit my wall during this party after averaging 4-5 hours a sleep per night and this was my 9th party in 6 days (plus working remotely) it’s important to build in buffers during Carnival but I want to support my friends when the host events (I still haven’t found the right balance yet) I struggled a lot with the party theme and wanted to do an interpretation of the demon rabbit in the underworld referenced in a papyrus scroll but ended up not using the mask I had painted. Instead, I ended up being inspired the night before we flew and did this project from 10:30 pm - 4:30 am before our 11:00am flight. It’s a Greco-Roman inspired 1790s robe using @americanduchess pattern @simplicity_creative_group S8941 The faux silk had some embroidered flowers that reminded me of the lotus hieroglyphic so I decided to use it for this project I had some fabric I used for a different costume and didn’t like how the costume turned out, and used the extra fabric for this bonus costume.
